Biden targets 'Romney's Etch A Sketch'

(CNN) – Vice President Joe Biden invoked the Etch A Sketch controversy to attack Mitt Romney's economic proposals during a speech in the battleground state of Florida Friday.

Biden specifically targeted Republican presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney's support of the "cut, cap and balance" while mocking the Etch A Sketch comment from senior Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom.

"Governor Romney supports cut, cap and balance and which is yet another demonstration that there is no daylight between Gov. Romney and Republican leaders on the most important issues facing this country," Biden said. "And not even Romney's Etch A Sketch can change that. He is not going to be able to do that. He may buy a new one, but he can't do it.

Fehrnstrom set off a fire storm after he compared the differences between a general and primary election to an Etch A Sketch, during an appearance on CNN Wednesday.

"Cut, cap and balance" is a Republican-backed proposal that passed the House of Representatives in July 2011. Those who signed the pledge vowed to oppose any debt limit increases unless they included cuts and caps on spending, as well as the passage of a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Romney has said he supports the pledge as a first step toward reforming government.

Biden's speech Friday in Coconut Creek, Florida was the second in a series of speeches the former Delaware senator is expected to make about the economy. Last week he addressed a United Auto Workers union hall in Ohio, a state likely to be competitive in 2012 election. The Obama-Biden ticket captured Florida and Ohio in the 2008 election with 50.9% and 51.2% of the vote respectively.

The Romney campaign countered with criticism of President Barack Obama.

"President Obama entered office promising to reform our entitlement programs and cut the deficit in half. He failed miserably on both counts," Andrea Saul, a campaign spokeswoman, said in a statement. "After three years of trillion-dollar deficits and a historic increase in the national debt, we need a new president – not four more years of broken promises and empty rhetoric."

Biden, who is also expected to campaign in Iowa, New Hampshire, Virginia and Pennsylvania, criticized Republican-backed measures that he said will negatively impact Social Security and Medicare.

"Make no mistake about it. If the Republicans in Congress and their amen corner of Romney, Santorum and Gingrich – if any of them get their hands on the White House, the keys to the White House I promise you, you will see Medicare ended as we know it," Biden said.

So the "Song of the Day" will change completely when Romney is a Presidential candidate. Makes one wonder how many of the Primary stay-at-home Republicans will be wooed by that. After being lied to consistently by Croesus Romney, I cannot imagine anyTea bagger or well dyed conservdrone even bothering to get out of their chairs next November.

My fellow liberal commenters: Trying to reason with the right is like trying to put out a forest fire by spitting on it. The GOP hatred of President Obama has completely clouded their reason. President Obama has done several things ( troop draw downs, getting us out of Iraq, getting bin Laden for example) and is still taking grief from the right. Even with the stock market and the job picture brightening, the right still won't give him credit. They claim President Obama is at fault for gas prices, but absolved Bush four years ago. See what we're dealing here?

Bravo to the correct and sensible people out there disputing the Obamacare lies! Obamacare is popular, it is saving lives and the cost is NOT doubling. The righties keep trying to spread lies about it, but for once, Americans can see through those lies. They thought calling it "Obamacare" was some sort of slam, but it's a compliment to President Obama giving him credit for some great healthcare reform legislation. Obama 2012!

I'll put it bluntly. I don't like Romney. I don't like Santorum. I like Obama. And this Etch-a-Sketch nonsense needs to stop getting airplay. Honestly, let's stop focusing on quotes taken out of context, reading between the lines, and attacking opponents......and try having intelligent and respectful debates between candidates that actually focus on important issues

You go Joe! You rock so hard, oh wait ... the insanity medication is wearing off! Did you plagiarize this speech like the paper you got in trouble for while at Syracuse law? Or maybe like that campaign speech in 1987?! Joe Biden is a proven cheater and liar ... no wonder his credentials were perfect for the Obama ticket. Biden for President in 2016, I think I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.

"The Ryan budget DOES end medicare as we know it. IT just simply does."

People need to cut the crap with the "as we know it" verbiage. Ryan's CouponCare Crapshoot repeals and replaces, i.e., ENDS MEDICARE, PERIOD. You don't get to slap the same name on something that is entirely different in efficiency, efficacy, substance and scope and claim that just because you're calling it the same name, it's till the same thing and you've magically saved whatever it originally was. It's not the same thing and it is complete and utter BS for people to be caging and qualifying the FACT that the GOP's budget and plan is to END MEDICARE with this "as we know it" vomit.

That will depend Dave, on how much they hate Obama. Do they hate him so much that they will cut off their own noses to spite their faces, so to speak, to vote for Romney just to see Obama get beaten?

Half the people who say on polls they are unhappy with Obamacare are unhappy because they don't think it goes far enough. If given a choice between Obamacare and whatever the Republicans are going to be offering, they are going to flock to Obama in droves.

This is one example of why this country is going to hell in a hand-basket. To focus so much time and energy on something so trivial is a heinous disservice to the citizens (voters) of this country. Get on to something more substantial than a quickie soundbite.

Lordie, lordie if Fox or Rush would tell Republicans the founding fathers really meant to call the USA Ronald Reagan Land I bet 75% of Republicans would believe it. They believe Obama is a Muslem so it's easy to dupe these guys....And yes the Ryan plan does end Medicare even if you don't want to believe it....
