Biden targets 'Romney's Etch A Sketch'

(CNN) – Vice President Joe Biden invoked the Etch A Sketch controversy to attack Mitt Romney's economic proposals during a speech in the battleground state of Florida Friday.

Biden specifically targeted Republican presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney's support of the "cut, cap and balance" while mocking the Etch A Sketch comment from senior Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom.

"Governor Romney supports cut, cap and balance and which is yet another demonstration that there is no daylight between Gov. Romney and Republican leaders on the most important issues facing this country," Biden said. "And not even Romney's Etch A Sketch can change that. He is not going to be able to do that. He may buy a new one, but he can't do it.

Fehrnstrom set off a fire storm after he compared the differences between a general and primary election to an Etch A Sketch, during an appearance on CNN Wednesday.

"Cut, cap and balance" is a Republican-backed proposal that passed the House of Representatives in July 2011. Those who signed the pledge vowed to oppose any debt limit increases unless they included cuts and caps on spending, as well as the passage of a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Romney has said he supports the pledge as a first step toward reforming government.

Biden's speech Friday in Coconut Creek, Florida was the second in a series of speeches the former Delaware senator is expected to make about the economy. Last week he addressed a United Auto Workers union hall in Ohio, a state likely to be competitive in 2012 election. The Obama-Biden ticket captured Florida and Ohio in the 2008 election with 50.9% and 51.2% of the vote respectively.

The Romney campaign countered with criticism of President Barack Obama.

"President Obama entered office promising to reform our entitlement programs and cut the deficit in half. He failed miserably on both counts," Andrea Saul, a campaign spokeswoman, said in a statement. "After three years of trillion-dollar deficits and a historic increase in the national debt, we need a new president – not four more years of broken promises and empty rhetoric."

Biden, who is also expected to campaign in Iowa, New Hampshire, Virginia and Pennsylvania, criticized Republican-backed measures that he said will negatively impact Social Security and Medicare.

"Make no mistake about it. If the Republicans in Congress and their amen corner of Romney, Santorum and Gingrich – if any of them get their hands on the White House, the keys to the White House I promise you, you will see Medicare ended as we know it," Biden said.

I just can't believe how unwilling Obama/Biden are to cut spending and reduce the size of government. They are imperiling future generations, and it is so irresponsible. Why not give states the ability to craft their own health care plans to serve the needs of their residents? Whoever though that the government could do a better job than the open markets is just crazy!

Obama has imperiled the future of the country by refusing to cut expenses and downsize government. The downfall of all great civilizations was the growth of government, and the current administration seems to be headed down this road.

Unfortunately, no matter who wins in November, Medicare and Social Security "as we know it" is going to end, whether we want it to or not.

CNN, I see you welcome lively and courteous discussion in your forums. Lively yes, but courteous, I have serious doubts. You should not condone the type of disrespectful comments posted here about Vice-President Biden. Would you like me to translate things like "I have flushed higher intelligent life forms down the toliet than you and your daddy Obammy"?

Where exactly did Obama say he would cut the deficit in half? Was that during the campaign, BEFORE the economic meltdown?

I hate going on the same straight line all the time and cannot have the freedom of a pencil. What is the matter with you people that are causing their stock to soar. That is indicative of a nation filled with those that must have a railroad track to travel on – a line – cannot be creative or act outside the normal course of action though it may be wrong and cross itself again and again.

Think about what you are doing here!

Behold the mess before you on that screen and that is YOU!

EtchySketchy and Cruel you are you haters of the pencil!

What's really sad is that Etch a Sketches haven't been made in the US since 2000. They're all made in China now.

It seems to me that those under 55 should be very aware and very worried about their getting any kind of Medicare when they hit senior-citizen age, as Ryan's plan will do away with Medicare as we know it now, so they should be speaking out against this at this time. So wake up, guys!!

It is amazing how the right resorts to name calling and mockery when they do not have the facts to support their position. America was founded as a democracy, a plurality, not a totalitarian regime like the Nazis where there was a take it or else doctrine. We are allowed to dissent and disagree, to place all ideas in the public forum of debate and have the people decide. If your ideas lose you accept that fact and rally around the winner for the country's sake. Apparantly the right cannot do this because of their blind hatred for a BLACK POTUS. I could respect you more if you just came out and admitted it.

you will see Medicare ended as we know it," Biden said. that coming from a person that has passed a healthcare bill no one read and cuts I think about $500 million from Medicare. Biden is nothing but an ignorant windbag. I cannot wait for him and Obama to get kicked out of the house and for Mitt to change the locks on the doors!

Oh the Progressive just want to keep on doing the same old thing that put us in the mess we are in today spending money we don't have, making promises they can't keep. Oh if only the rich would pay more taxes! Wake up people the Federal Gov't is the problem NOT THE SOLUTION. WHy do we need to send OUR tax dollars to some bureaucrat in Washington so they can turn around and "give it" back to the States. It would be far more efficient to let the States tax and spend the money locally. The question is how do we get the blood suckers in DC out of our pockets. Cut all Federal programs except State, Defense and the Postal Service, cut the budget and taxes to match and let local governments tax "their citizens" in alignment with their priorities. Local government is the best government

The real US middle cllass is doomed. Romney and Sanatorium want to bundle up all of the money up for the benefit of the rich ..... and Obama wants to give it to illegal aliens and cronic unemployed. Someone needs to press "RESTRART"

Romney may have his Etch a Sketch, but Ricky has his mouth.  The man "etched in stone" took less than 26 seconds to back away from his comments "the unemployment rate does not matter" and in Puerto Rico he backed off on his comments on English.  It is a good thing Ricky has his Etch a Sketch at his side to erase his comments.  As for Newt not worth trouble because of his irrelevance.  For Biden and Obama they don't use an Etch a Sketch they employ the Neuralyzer from the movie 'Men in Black' to erase the American people's memory of the failures of the past four years.

Etch-a-sketch? This is a question for Google. How many times was etch-a sketch googled the week prior to Romney's advisor making his announcement about the etch-a-sketch plan for the fall? The strategy he spoke of has been used for years, nothing new only the etch-a-sketch. His statement was probably planned and intentional. At what rate did etch-a sketch orders increase prior to him making that statement? Santorum and Gingrich are in the race to motivate and entertain conseravatives and in the fall they will make an announcement of how Romney have their full support.

Another question. How long has Catholic facilities been providing birth control for men and women? How long has this been the law of the U.S., before or after Gingrich became a US congressman? Why have they made it seem as if this is something new? Not sure what conservatism mean, seem like...make it up as you go and mislead the less informed. Can CNN's Soledad O'Brien do a live question to people around the US and see if they get the same answer as Fact Check.

The list of questions should include: Name each part of the health care plan that the Supreme Court is voting, then after each part, ask if they agree or disagree. Do you think children should stay on their parent's health insurance until age 26, yes or no and why? Do you think health insurance companies should be able to drop/not pay pre-exsisting conditions, yes or no and why? Do you think everyone should have to pay for health insurance? etc.

How dare they? Why the very notion of having a balanced budget is rediculous! You democrats never cease to amaze me with your stupidity. The fact that you people voted Biden into office then went one step further and elected him VP is a testamony to how easy it is to pull the wool over the voters eyes. Keep drinking the kool aid kiddies...
