Gingrich: Obama policies fuel Muslim claims

Port Fourchon, Louisiana (CNN) - Barack Obama is a Christian, Newt Gingrich said Friday, but he also said he understands why some people believe the U.S. president is Muslim.

"Why does the president behave the way that people would think that? You have to ask why would they believe that? It's not because they're stupid," Gingrich said after a campaign stop on Louisiana's Gulf Coast Friday.

The Republican presidential candidate experienced that firsthand in Lake Charles Wednesday, when a man stood up during a question and answer session and said, among other things, that he believes Obama "is a Muslim."

Since then reporters have asked Gingrich why he didn't correct the man if he believes that to be untrue.

"Does it bother or concern you that so many people do think he's a Muslim? Polls show it's a big chunk of the electorate," a reporter from Atlanta Journal-Constitution asked him during a media availability. Gingrich replied, "It should bother the president."

Gingrich turned to the administration's policies to explain why some people might question the president's Christian faith. He said the administration has "a very strange value system."

"The fact is I take [Obama] at his word but I think it is very bizarre that he is desperately concerned to apologize to Muslim religious fanatics while they are killing young Americans while at the same time going to war against the Catholic Church and against every right to live Protestant organization in the country," said Gingrich.

He added, "I just think this is an administration that has very odd values. They're just standard left-wing values which is as long as you're not Christian or Jewish we respect you."

The former House speaker often points out the administrations "war" with the Catholic Church related to the rights of religious institutions and the universal health care law.

Newt, you are in no position to question anyone's value system.

I think Tulane should ask for his PhD back. That is some of the laziest intellectual assertions I have ever seen, but, its what I've come to expect from people who take the Etch A Sketch view of the world: if they don't like reality, grab it and shake it so they can create their own reality. Pathetic, especially when you consider the fact their assertions change little, aside from adding more hate into the world.

No, Newt, you got it all wrong. The blame falls on political shock jock entertainers like Limbaugh, Hannity, and Coulter, and faux news media organizations like Fox and Murdoch newspapers. The lunatic conservative elements in the GOP/Tea Party will believe anything, no matter how ludicrous or outlandish.

Well, it's obvious that Gingrich knows little to nothing about Islam. Nor does it seem that the people who think the president is a Muslim despite his stating that he's a Christian. His desperate attempts to get people to vote for him are really getting pathetic. It must be hell for him to believe in his mind that he deserves to be president; yet, the reality is that he's not a likable guy and has ZERO chance of becoming the nominee. Pack it up & go home Newt. The game has been over for you for some time now....

You might be right Newt that it isn't because they are stupid, but then that only leaves the possibility that they look for any reason to hate President Obama even if the reason is contrary to facts. Not that members of your party have any need for the facts in the first place. Aw shucks, now we're just back to the stupidity excuse.

Yeah, people aren't stupid but you are, Newt. And you're obviously desperate because you keep bring up the 'president is a secret muslim' myth for all the bigots and haters(just like you) out there.
You'll never be anything but a joke on SNL.

CNN – please. Please, please please please please. I'm begging you. Just stop telling me what Newt Gingrich says. He's completely irrelevant, and he's wasting my time. I'd rather you just pick someone at random from the phone book and report what they say – at least that would be interesting.

No, Gingrich, it's exactly because they're stupid. It's because there's a sizable number of people in this country who think that believing something strongly enough makes it true, even if confronted with readily available evidence to the contrary. There's no other word for that than "stupid."

Oh please. People like you are just looking for more excuses to dislike the president. Besides, unless you are a muslim, who do you know what muslim feel or how they think? Filtered through your ignorance is not a good way to judge. Go somewhere, sit down and shut up!

Could also be that Hussein middle name which is why Democrats go ape shiite when you mention it. Isn't it traditionally a name muslims use? I wonder why he never changed it? Can you imagine if his middle name was Mohammed?!

But it could also be all of the apologizing and catering he has done to them. Obama urinates all over Catholics though no problem.

Its nice to know that Newt will never let his newfound religious faith cloud his views, that he can represent all of us so well-NOT! This is the same Newt that was slapped with a $300K fine and forced to resign in disgrace, only now he thinks he has the vatican on his side. Sickening, cheapening display of faith he probably does not feel.

No, it's because they ARE stupid and there are always pandering, lying scoundrels like yourself Newt who are willing to exploit the people's fear and ignorance to cover up their complete inadequacies for holding any sort of public office. Case in point: Mr. Truth and Nothing But the Truth
