Poll: Romney tops field in Wisconsin

(CNN) - One week before Wisconsin holds its Republican presidential primary, a new poll indicates Mitt Romney with an eight point advantage over Rick Santorum.

According to a Marquette Law School poll released Tuesday, 39% of likely Wisconsin GOP primary voters say they are backing Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who's the front-runner in the race for the nomination, with 31% supporting Santorum, the former senator from Pennsylvania. Eleven percent of people questioned said they're backing Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, with 5% supporting former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Forty-two delegates are at stake when Wisconsin holds its primary next Tuesday. Maryland and the District of Columbia also have GOP presidential contests on April 3.

The poll also looks ahead to the general election, when Wisconsin could be a contested state in the battle for the White House. According to the survey, President Barack Obama holds a 48%-43% margin over Romney among Wisconsin voters, with Obama leading Santorum 51%-39%, topping Paul 50%-40%, and beating Gingrich 53%-36%.

The Marquette Law School poll was conducted March 22-25, with 707 registered voters in Wisconsin, including 349 likely GOP primary voters, questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.8 percentage points, with a sampling error of plus or minus 5.4 percentage points for questions only of likely GOP primary voters.

Face it – Gingrich and Santorum are only viable in the deep south (with the possible exception of PA, for whatever reason) as we have seen so far. Paul is viable in ?...TX?
