Poll: Romney tops field in Wisconsin

(CNN) - One week before Wisconsin holds its Republican presidential primary, a new poll indicates Mitt Romney with an eight point advantage over Rick Santorum.

According to a Marquette Law School poll released Tuesday, 39% of likely Wisconsin GOP primary voters say they are backing Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who's the front-runner in the race for the nomination, with 31% supporting Santorum, the former senator from Pennsylvania. Eleven percent of people questioned said they're backing Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, with 5% supporting former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Forty-two delegates are at stake when Wisconsin holds its primary next Tuesday. Maryland and the District of Columbia also have GOP presidential contests on April 3.

The poll also looks ahead to the general election, when Wisconsin could be a contested state in the battle for the White House. According to the survey, President Barack Obama holds a 48%-43% margin over Romney among Wisconsin voters, with Obama leading Santorum 51%-39%, topping Paul 50%-40%, and beating Gingrich 53%-36%.

The Marquette Law School poll was conducted March 22-25, with 707 registered voters in Wisconsin, including 349 likely GOP primary voters, questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus 3.8 percentage points, with a sampling error of plus or minus 5.4 percentage points for questions only of likely GOP primary voters.

Romney will again win, and distance himself from Santorum and Gingrich. TIme for Santorum and Gingrich to hang up their microphones and stump speeches.

The poll has confirmed it once again. Republicans vote as they are told, not how they might think they should. They want to vote for a "winner", which is human nature. They are told who the winner is and vote accordingly.

Mitt seems to run well in blue states, and worse in the red. It does not bode well for November.

How is it that when CNN reports the poll number that the numbers for the other candidates are actual numbers (39%, 31%, etc.) but the number for Ron Paul is wirtten out (eleven percent instead of 11%)? Is this a Freudian slip of CNN's (the whole mainstream media really) bias towards Ron Paul? FOR SHAME!

Mittens has spent almost $60 million in negative ads, and he rarely can get over 40%. Not much of a businessman, but the money from the turd blossom, the Kochs and the 'swift boaters' will never run out.

For the sake of the baggers, I hope that when Mittens finally gets around to releasing his long form birth certificate, he will be shown to be partially white.

Remember that Wisconsin has an open primary so many of those "likely Wisconsin GOP primary voters" are probably not Republicans. Plus it's the same date as our spring local government and school board elections - there are going to be a lot of us going to the polls anyway that day. Usually I would let the GOP make their own bad decisions by themselves, but coming from one of the most liberal and politically active wards in the state I'm finding it very hard not to throw my two cents in...

Actually I'm a little surprised that Ron Paul isn't doing better here. His numbers might improve after the big town hall meeting on campus Thursday - he seems to be the candidate of choice for extremists from all ends of the political spectrum.

It's generally considered bad grammar/bad writing to begin a sentence with an actual number, so it gets spelled out instead. For your own sake, I would suggest taking a break from the tinfoil hat.

You truly don't pay any attention to the polls at all, do you? Just sit around in the ole' echo chamber spouting all the stuff you want to hear and listening it reverberate back at you? Certainly would make a good topic for a psych or sociology study.

I'm talking about the general election Rudy. Red/Blue doesn't apply to Republican primaries. Try to keep up.
So do you agree/disagree that ROmney is polling better than Obama with Independents? Obama is DOWN in every demographic group except black voters (wonder why with the very high unemployment rate). And now he's falling short of that $1 BILLION Smear Machine goal. Start packing Obama!

BTW, if yuo want to impersonate me, you might want to try using my language and writing style. I've never said "Romenybigot" in my entire life. If you were half as clever as you think you are, you'd have used "Mittens." Pay attention, junior.
