Why your mailman could be retiring

Washington (CNNMoney) - Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said Tuesday that incentives will be offered to woo some of the 150,000 eligible employees to retire.

"We're going to offer incentives as we move from six to five day delivery," Donahoe told a House hearing on Tuesday. "It's critical to move the head count down."

The same government that brought you the bloated, union-run, money loser, disaster known as the USPS what to run your healthcare system! NO THANK YOU!!!!

The USPS was always known as the place to get a job for life. Have they EVER laid anybody off or does the union contract prohibit that? The USPS needs a good top to bottom going over to get it back into shape. Give everybody a pink slip and tell them to re-apply for their job. No large buyouts and paydays at the taxpayers expense.

When republicans start complaining about letters costing them over $25 to send by Fed -Ex, vs. 48 cents with usps, I'll bet they blame someone other than the republicans who caused the usps financial crisis.

@Truth – Why do you want to drive down the standard of living for so many Americans. It's a big right wing race to the bottom. One day, you'll be sitting around with your fellow short sighted friends wondering what happened to our country. Haven't you noticed that the biggest decline has occurred over the past 30 years since the income disparity started growing and incomes flatlined for 90% of the population? This is not an accident. There have been a host of tax and regulatory policy changes that have driven those changes – starting with the Reagan revolution.

  9. The Greedy Old Pigs declared class war on US!

The USPS was fine until the GOBP imposed rules on its pension plan that the GOBP does not impose on any private companies. In other words, this is more evidence of the GOBP's blatant hypocrisy and hatred of unions.

The USPS serves many rural areas that private companies would never service on a daily basis. In today's economy, timing is everything. Closing up many of the smaller POs in rural areas would force some folks to drive a hundred miles to reach a PO, which would crush many small businesses out of existence.

Most of the people who would get hurt the most live areas that traditionally vote conservative. Once the damage is done, their politicians will blame liberals for spending too much. When the truth is that money was shifted from the PO into tax cuts for the wealthy and the large corporations who want to suck the small business customers. You get what you pay for.

What has caused decline is globalization of the job market and other under developed countries (China, Korea, India, etc.) becoming industrialized and high tech. The USA is not the only large economy on the planet anymore. Oil has a world market and now jobs do. People need to change their mindset on what a job is because nobody owes you one and you are competing with Chang in China and Pukesh in India. Democrats and liberals are LIVING IN THE PAST an ddoing nothing but whining about it, wanting to turn the clocks back. IT AIN'T HAPPENIN"!!!

Total BS and without facts to back it up. So you already know the POs that are closing?

When the truth is that money was shifted from the PO into tax cuts for the wealthy and the large corporations who want to suck the small business customers.
    =============================================================================================
More total lies Rudy. The USPS is supposed to be self sufficient and NOT taxpayer funded. Tax money money is NOT suppposed to be going to the USPS.

Liberals are just besides themselves because yet another government run disaster is crumbling before their very eyes as they all want the same failed government to run YOUR healthcare. Large government is a FAILURE.

If one US state did poorly while all of the surrounding states did well, most people would blame the leaders in the state doing poorly. Declaring that the other states did better than the one is declaring their superiority, especially when you live in the state. "Those other guys were better at it than we were."

Whatever happened to your American pride in American greatness, and all the rest of the yada yada yada.

@Truth – The Republicans broke the budget for the USPS in 2006 when they voted to require they pre-pay for 75 years worth of pensions over a 10 year period. That is totally absurd, meant for the sole purpose of bankrupting the organization so that it could be privatized and sold to the highest bidder. No structured bankruptcy for the USPS. Liquidation bankruptcy.

What is going to happen to that big pot of money when they finally eliminate the USPS? Oh, I know. Use it to pay for another *permanantly recurring* tax cut, just like Reagan did to the SS fund.

For SOME, yes. If your job is a global commodity, easily exported, then yes. There WILL be fewer jobs here as more jobs are created in other countries. It's been happening for decades and will continue at a great pace as India and China gain affluence and pump out even more educated, professional people.

The USA monopolized the global economy and all the jobs that came with it for a long time but that could NEVER be sustained. Yes, the world changes and you must change and adopt or be swept away with the tides of change.
