Fond du Lac, Wisconsin (CNN) - Mitt Romney won't join the millions betting on a lucky Mega Millions ticket, but that didn't stop him from speculating about another possible participant.
At a quick stop at a Fond du Lac diner, the GOP candidate was asked if he would vie for the sky-high payout in the lotto contest.

Romney demurred but he did unleash a zinger directed at his rival Newt Gingrich's billionaire benefactor, casino magnate Sheldon Adelson.
"I understand that Sheldon Adelson has bought some tickets," Romney quipped to reporters in Schreiner's Restaurant.
Adelson and his family have contributed over 16 million to the super PAC supportive of Gingrich's campaign.
The former Massachusetts governor, who purchased four slices of cherry pie from restaurant owner Paul Cunningham for himself and some staffers, was accompanied by his new supporter, Rep. Paul Ryan.
Ryan said he had frequented the restaurant as a child and gave Romney some local tips.
In the kitchen, Romney asked a chef with a saute pan: "Is that perch or whitefish?"
Ryan explained the so-called "poor man's lobster" dish was actually haddock.
Romney also batted down a diner's question about his vice presidential potentials - though he planned to spend the weekend campaigning alongside one man whose name strategists have mentioned.
"I'm not presumptuous enough because I'm not - I'm not the nominee yet. So until then, I'm not going to think about it," Romney said, then gestured to Ryan nearby. "You got Paul Ryan over there. He wants to say hi I'm sure."

A Romney-Ryan administration would be brilliant. Very powerful in terms of leadership and capability. There is an incredible amount of work to be done and this would be the team to make it happen.
Romney-Ryan 2012! And as many Republican Senators we can get in.
What would be cruel is that SOB would be "lucky" enough to win... UGH the thought!! LOL
TWEET OF THE DAY FROM MATT ROMNEY
Dad , If Ryan is VP , will that mean I can be Treasury Secretary ?
I like Haddock!
After taxes the lotto winner of the 500 million would have about the same amount of money as Romney.
zinger.. really cnn.. pathetic
Big deal, who cares.
"I was considering buying all 170,000,000 number combinations, but I thought it better to give the proles a shot at it. To look good, you know?"
With a net worth of over $250 million dollars, Romney is already a member of the exclusive top one percent of wealthiest Americans.
The lottery is against Romney's religion, but buying companies on paper without the money, laying Americans off, and moving the factories to China for slave labor, then selling them for profits, is not against his religion.
I call bull manure on Romney and his cult religion.
Why should he buy one? He's been holding the winning ticket for years.
Romney already has more money than his great grandchildren can spend. If elected he will be the 2nd richest president of all time, and the number 1 most out of touch with the real world.
He is so "slow".. Newt is no threat.....Adelson could then fund you, Willard. "Wanna bet....10,000"
Whomever wins the Megamillion lottery will be as qualified as Romney is to become President. They will be wealthy without real work and will be out of touch.
Poor man's lobster? No wonder Mitt had to ask what it was.
Sooooooooooooooooooooo out of touch and so fake lol.
Adelson can buy and sell Romney. What, is he jealous that he backed Newt instead of him. He's so petty. Can you imagine as pres dealing with a hostile congress or foreign leader with that childish mentality.
'"I understand that Sheldon Adelson has bought some tickets," Romney quipped ' "Quipped"? Really? Yeah, that's a real knee-slapper, Mitt.
Why would Romney need lotto tickets? He makes his money the old fashion way; by buying companies, firing workers, and selling their assets.
Almost as funny as the one about his dad laying off people.
Well, DUH! It's against his religion. Mormons aren't supposed to gamble, hence why no lottery in Utah.
Who freaking cares about how many slices of pie he bought! Are you just trying to pad because you have a minimum word count? And I really don't care about if it were white fish or crawfish... none of this tells me what his policies are for the betterment of this country.
Romney making billionaire jokes.
He is so going to lose...
Mitt and Paul Ryan together–what a couple of losers. The latest poll shows Obama beating Mittens by 17 points in Wisconsin.
