Romney in 'Mad Men' spotlight

(CNN) – The Romney family got the "Mad Men" treatment in Sunday's episode, courtesy of a derogatory reference to the father of the current Republican presidential hopeful.

Henry Francis, the character who works for New York City Mayor John Lindsay, is heard telling someone on the phone he does not want his boss heading to Michigan, where George Romney served as governor from 1963 until 1969.

"He's not going to Michigan because Romney's a clown, and I don't want him standing next to him," Francis, played by actor Christopher Stanley, said.

The most recent episode of the AMC television drama takes place in 1966, the mid-point of the elder Romney's tenure as governor.

Mitt Romney, the current GOP frontrunner and former Massachusetts governor, talked repeatedly of his late father while campaigning in Michigan's Republican primary, a contest he won handily on February 28.

George Romney launched a failed presidential bid of his own while serving as governor of Michigan. He went on to serve as former President Richard Nixon's secretary of housing and urban development.

Romney's eldest son, Tagg defended his grandfather via Twitter on Monday.

"Seriously, lib media mocking my dead grandpa?" one tweet read.

"George Romney was as good a man I've ever known. Inspirational leader, worked for civil rights, promoted freedom. We need more like him," another message read.

Mi'tt's father looks as phony and obnoxious as his son. BTW, when Mitt's mother, Lenore, tried to run, she lost her first and only election by 70%!

  5. Obama Doubling down on Socialism

Liberal Hollywood trying to help save their failure from getting the boot in November. Sure makes one wonder about all the other programming/propaganda they toss out onto the airwaves to brainwash the people.

Eh – it's a way for the writers to say what goes around, comes around. 45 years later and we're still arguing political positioning wtih a famous name – it's just the son now instead of the dad. Anyone that takes it more seriously than that is missing the point trying to be made.

@Thomas, you are exactly right. Romney has not issues of his own he's running on – he's GOP puppet, just like George Bush Jr. He has absolutely nothing or no compassion of any sort for the American people – but according to his stump speeches, he does have a lot of weird memories of his father. He has been running for office for 20 years now – and he's clearly not in it for the people. All that money – and he's spending it in the wrong venue. The guy needs to find a good psychiatrist's couch and go pay for it.

Mitt's father was a popular governor and businessman. This is no doubt a cowardly jab from the writers/producers. And then we get all the goon commentators with their wealth complexes. I've met Mitt and he is a stand-up guy, as I'm sure President Obama is. How about we stop all the 3rd grade comments and name-calling and focus on the issues?
