Spring forward: Santorum looks to May, not April

(CNN) - Rick Santorum on Monday showed little hope for winning several contests in April but predicted a big comeback next month, when voters in more conservative states head to the polls.

“May is rich with delegates and strong states for us,” Santorum said on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight.”

His comments came one day before a trio of contests in the Democrat-heavy areas of Wisconsin, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Also in April, voters will cast their ballots in the traditionally blue states of Connecticut, Delaware, New York and Rhode Island.

Santorum, who has fared well in the South and Midwest, said he knew “April would be a very tough month,” which is why his campaign has shifted its focus towards May.

Pointing to the typically red states of Texas, Arkansas, Kentucky, Indiana and West Virginia - all of which hold primaries next month - the former Pennsylvania senator said he liked his chances in those contests and predicted a drastic change in the race come summertime.

“By the end of May, we expect this race to be very close to even,” Santorum said, referring to a match-up with rival Mitt Romney.

So far, Santorum lags significantly behind Romney in delegates, according to CNN’s latest estimates. The former Massachusetts governor leads the GOP field with 571 delegates, while Santorum has 264, Newt Gingrich has 137 and Ron Paul has 71.

April, however, won’t be a total loss for his campaign, Santorum said. The candidate reiterated that he expects to win his home state of Pennsylvania later in the month and thinks he will “run well” in Wisconsin’s primary this week.

While he has not explicitly called on Gingrich and Paul to drop out of the race, he said their “vote totals are distorting the outcome” and acknowledged their departure would help his White House aspirations.

“We have an opportunity to rally behind one conservative who can beat Mitt Romney right now, and that’s me,” Santorum said. “Hopefully Speaker Gingrich and others will come to that conclusion.”

It doesn't matter whether these states are majority blue or not. They also have republicans in them and those republicans get a voice. There are more republicans in New York State than in several southern states combined.

Santorum you are not going to win. You're down by more than double in votes. Why waste the time and money? You sound so ignorant thinking that you actually have a chance at this point.

Who wants Romney he is just worried about his family. MARK my words, if he wins his ‘5’ golden boy sons will get better jobs, make more money, trips around the world, etc…… I guess we need to make the super wealthy wealthier.
Also Romney is a draft-dodger; he used his religion to get away with serving. I guess we all should become Mormon to avoid serving in the military! What will happen to the United States of America if we all become Mormon?
I just lost a friend to stage-4 pancreatic cancer, if there is a God above, I hope the same happens to Romney and his ‘golden sons’ I hope they all rot and suffer with the most horrific pain!
If Romney thinks he is so great for the USA, he needs to man-up. He should put his ‘5’ golden boy sons life’s on the line. Example: If Romney breaks his promises to the people of the USA, his family should go before a firing squad. This is crazy, but it is one way to keep him to his promises. If he makes his rich friends and family wealthier buy pulling strings, execute his golden boys!

Question is: Santorum or Gingrich can you win this primary outright with 1144 delegates? If the answer is a "no" then get out! and allow for the party to coalesce around the nominee. If you believe in your heart of hearts you can get the 1144 then by all means stay in.

Obama is building the largest political campaign in history. If you cannot win, get out so the nominee can build his campaign to beat Obama – which is the whole purpose of this primary anyway.

Let me tell the informed something....Rick Santorum has ZERO chance. This loser should go find John McCain and hang out together. Santorum is a religious nut job who is really just an American Taliban. He has no chance and needs to drop out already.
