Axelrod uses 'Mad Men' jab on Romney

(CNN) – George Romney was the butt of the jokes Sunday, but it was his son Mitt who took the "Mad Men" heat Tuesday from President Barack Obama's top campaign adviser.

Speaking on "CBS This Morning," David Axelrod derided Romney for espousing policies he said were from another era, using the AMC series set in 1966 to slam the Republican presidential hopeful.

"Romney seems to look at the world through the rear view mirror," Axelrod said, listing a series of seemingly antiquated policies Romney has promoted on the stump.

"He wants to go back to the policies of the last decade on economics," Axelrod said. "And on other stuff, he says Russia's our greatest foe, he thinks employers ought to be able to decide if women should be able to get contraception coverage or not, every employer. If we drill for oil, that will solve our energy problem, no high fuel efficiency."

Axelrod concluded the former Massachusetts governor was taking fictional television a little too seriously.

"I think he watches 'Mad Men' instead of the evening news. He's in a time warp," Axelrod said.

On Sunday, Romney's father George was briefly mentioned on the series' season opener. A character working for another politician objected to a joint appearance with George Romney, referring to the candidate as "a clown."

George Romney launched a failed presidential bid of his own while serving as governor of Michigan. He went on to serve as former President Richard Nixon's secretary of housing and urban development.

Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul responded to Axelrod's comments, saying America's challenges are "too serious for President Obama and his team to be laughing about TV shows."

"If the White House spent more time worrying about the economy and less time worrying about Mitt Romney, maybe the country would be in better shape,” Saul said in an email.

"tax cuts pay for themselves." They assuredly do not.
Well, Democrats think huge government entitlements pay for themselves! We can all have free everything from birth until death and party 'til dawn. Truth is SOMEBODY ELSE foots the bill and those are the hard working people who actually pay taxes and yes, all those evil rich people that end up paying the most.

We USED to have a tax system that was used to pay for the government but NOW we have a tax system that simply takes from those that work to give to those that do not. The tax code has been perverted into a license to steal at will, and without limit.

I don't really pay much attention to right wing statements anymore whether from Mittens campaign or from some extreme right commenter. The reason being, that Obama will be in office for more than four more years and his election will be a landslide.

Here come the democrats doing what they do best next to spending my money.....slinging mud! I have never seen such a narrow minded, hateful people as those who post here. I am part of those who pay taxes. The only thing fair would be that everyone paid their share. Obama is a socialist heading this country to a nanny state that has total control over its citizens.

Republicans are really going to be simmering after 4 more years of Obama. These clowns they have in the GOP don't have a clue what the 99% of Americans needs are. Why would we elect someone that has a car elevator and a wife who makes statements like she never realized they were rich? Talk about being out of touch with the American people!!!! Come on Republican, get back with the 99% and see how we live from day to day. We need a leader who knows what it's like to knows what it's like to have his/her feet hurt because they can't afford new shoes. Get with the program, your people don't have a clue!

Romney wants to go back to the policies of the last decade instead of continuing Obama's policies which have resulted in annual trillion dollar deficits, a record national debt, a 41% increase in unemployment, record high gasoline prices, and an ever increasing intrusion of the Federal Government at the expense of individual rights.

Democrats and the left fringe seem to welcome the misery; the rest of the country is repelled.

Come on Republican, get back with the 99% and see how we live from day to day.
I used to be one of you 99% but worked and got an education and work some more and saved and did without and worked some more until I am a 1%. So you see, while I used to be one of you I was truly never one of you. I never blamed others for what I didn't have or expected others to give me something for nothing. I never held others success against them and accused them of holding me back or stealing from me. I just took care of MY business. It wasn't easy given the fact that the government takes so much but I did it. And all you 1% can too if you get off whatever it is you are on (drugs, alcohol, government dole, your parents dole, etc.) and take control of YOUR life. Dependency, it a horrible waste of a life.

...Why would we elect someone that has a car elevator and a wife who makes statements like she never realized they were rich?
Because you are not electing a talk show host. You are electing someone to manage the federal government of a nation of 350 million people with the largest and most sophisticated economy the world has ever known. Personal wealth is not a detractor from this job. In fact, you might want to elect someone who has shown a capability to manage complex organizations in difficult situations and has a good workable understanding of the economy and the American government. Mitt Romney is absolutely the best qualified person for the job. Fortunate for us he is interested in taking it.

"In fact, I doubt you even really care one bit about recovering the economy. They have you dreaming of vengeance against all those wealthy Americans out there."

Really? You think you can infer that from what I post here on CNN? If so, you should get a refund on your mindreading class. I care very much about the economy recovering, as I have witnessed the devastation your GOBP cult has caused our nation. And given that I have wealthy friends and relatives, I am careful not to tar them all with the same brush. My focus is on the parasites and vampires who lurk in the 1% while contributing little, if anything, to our nation's long term benefit. When such parasites devote their lives to caring only for the greedy and not the needy, then yes they need to be quarantined from the rest of society or they will destroy America and return us to some semi-feudal third world status. They were the ones who declared class war on us, so I guess to you fighting back is "vengeance."

Just a general question. IIf a person has to be a US borne American citizen, then how come Mr. George Romney (Gov Romney's father) tried to run as a president against Richard Nixon. No partizen politics please in the answers. Thanks.

Having lived in Michigan during the time George Romney was governor I know that he was a highly successful and very popular governor, even among Democrats. He was reelected twice because Michigan prospered and was extremely well governed during the period he was governor of the state. If David Axelrod and whatever his first name is Weiner don't know that it shows how ignorant they really are.

""If the White House spent more time worrying about the economy and less time worrying about Mitt Romney, maybe the country would be in better shape."

Let's take this at face value. What you're implying here is, a) the country was in great shape when Obama took office, and b) Obama has just recently started going after Romney, which means the country was in great shape right up until these last few days and he needs to get his focus back there, right?

I hate gutless, random attacks from politicians and their ilk that have no meaning and are just ZINGS.

Is it just me or does Romney never comment on the criticism against him. Tell us why you are not in another era Willard. Don't give us some lame one-liner. Romney may actually get some respect if he would address the criticism. He will never do it though. That's why he'll never be president.

    Obama Doubling down on Socialism,

Of course, you are the only one responsible for all of your own success because you worked so hard, you are so great, you have godlike skills, you are not lazy, like the other 99%.... Just wait where your greatness takes you when you come upon hard times. Doesn't take much, maybe you or one of your family members getting sick. Then you will be thankful that the Democrats have been fighting to improve health insurance and social services. I don't know why it is so hard to understand for people that the security network is for them too, once their luck has run out.

  20. Obama got Osama

Clinton handed Bush a 200M BUDGET SURPLUS. Bush turned into a 1.3TRILLION BUDGET DEFICIT that is still effecting us all today. Bush/GOP policies have added $6T and counting to the federal deficit! If you want a balance budget here is the simplest solution:

    1. Repeal Bush/GOP Tax Cuts
    2. Repeal Prescription Drug Plan for Seniors
    3. Repeal all Bush/GOP wars immediately.

Repeal all 3 these and you will have a balanced budget once again.

So for all the right-wing nuts who think Obama has increased spending and the federal deficit, you need to check the facts again.

"Mitt Romney is absolutely the best qualified person for the job."
You're joking, right?? Mitt is so bad on so many fronts. This doofus is so desperate to be prez that now his aim is to try to paint the Pres as of a secular religion-an atheist! Obama is more Christian than Mitt will ever hope to be. Mitt is constantly lying, a serial liar. And he is supposed to be so religious? We will make sure that he loses BIG TIME! And then go away forever!
