(CNN) - Van Jones, author and co-founder of Rebuild the Dream, asserted Wednesday on CNN's "Starting Point with Soledad O'Brien" that the White House underestimates its opponents.
The only party that campaigned on fixing the economy in the fall of 2008, were the Republicans and John McCain. They had no other choice. Democrats and Obama didn't campaign on fixing the economy, never had to. They campaigned against Bush, Republicans and their *proven* failure of an ideology. McCain was on the defensive, which in politics meant he was losing the argument and later on the election.
Is the economy better than when Pres. Obama took office? The answer is an undeniable, "Yes!" Now if we can only get conservatives out of the way, maybe we can do something for the middle class. Instead, of going back to the failed policies that have proven to only hurt the middle class.
When was the last time you heard Mitt Romney even say "middle class"? Over the course of 20 debates you can count on one hand how many times any of the candidates used those words. But, how many times did they say "job creators"?
...Not lending to small businesses led to the public outcry, "You helped Wall Street, but what about Main Street." The response to that outcry was the The Stimulus. Almost as soon as it was enacted, the rate of job loss slowed eventually peaking at just over 10%. Since that time, the month to month job loss steadily improved, eventually climbing into positive territory showing net gains.
So when exactly did the improvements in unemployment begin? I will help you out. The day American Voters elected in the Republican majority in the House of Representatives. And why did they vote them in? 2 reasons, both of which were front-and-center in the 2010 campaign and part of the Republican promise to America. Get government spending back in control and bring unemployment down. They have done both. Right away and consistently. I am proud of their resolve and accomplishments. It has been an excellent start.
I wouldn't underestimate him the GOP have always played dirty tricks that is why we were in this mess when the President was elected. Just look at the audience of the GOP contestants do they look like a flower garden of all colors or are they lily white? The President is suppose to represent all americans no matter the race or ethnicity.
Giving Obama credit for policies put in place before he was even elected,,,,getting us out of Iraq, for example, which was set up by Bush before Obama even beat Hillary in the primaries, yet the lemmings want to give Obama credit for it.
Uh, Taran. The conservative line has been that Obama was supposed to keep the troops *in* Iraq, not make a withdrawal and exit. Every leading Republican in Congress deried Obama as being weak for not forcibly renegotiating the SOFA agreement with the Iraqi government. Never mind the fact that their own guy, GWB, had promised to abide by whatever their wishes were.
This is what happens when you ignore the facts and just make stuff up as you go along.
So is he saying he is no longer a communist or socialist but a free market capitalist. You never know. Its all smoke and mirrors with Obama and his clan. Either way what they have done has been a colossal failure and Obama ran as a uniter and has ended up being a divider and seems to constantly want to bully others into his views.
The years 2000 and 2001 tax breaks for the rich was suppose to create jobs according to the Republicans, it didn't, in fact it created more wealth for the rich. Republicans function on words like "we're gonna do this or we're gonna do that" but it's never about what they have done but Americans are aware they haven't lifted one hand to help in the recovery of America.
Anybody BUT a Republican.
@Four and The Door – "How can he think the Democrats can win with personal smear and fear campaigns when Republicans are armed with experience, success and good plans based on good ideas?"
Perhaps you'd share some of those wonderful ideas with us? I hope you're not talking about the Ryan 20% tax reduction plan for all? Sounds great until you factor in that someone (that's US BTW) has to pay for the reduced revenue it will cause. Means a $1+ TRILLION the FIRST YEAR. But yeah, bring on the downfall of the US financial system so the wingnuts can get their tax reduction. Then there's the GOP YOYO (Your On Your Own) Healthcare proposal where once the Medicare "voucher" runs out, you're on your own going into bankruptcy.
Got any more good ideas?

Actually, if you look at the monthly jobs reports you will see that we climbed from -750,000/month and finally hit positive territory in the fall of 2010.
Republicans didn't run on cutting spending, they ran on jobs. Then the Congressional Republicans changed course in very late Sep. 2010. [Look it up, please.] They made a big spectacle over signing a pledge by all caucus members to cut spending. But, they still campaigned on jobs, jobs, jobs; not spending cuts. Your talking points are close to the truth, which also means that they are not factual.
Rudy, that is bull and you know it.
Even Jones senses the outrage of the general public. There are more "Fed-Up" folks out there than Obama realizes.
If you ever want to see another revolution, put a republican in office and remove all HOPE from the parents (for their children). They'll rise up so fast and so strong no one will know what broad-sided them until it's too late.
Without hope, there is NOTHING.
I'll take hope over guaranteed being wiped out totally by Fascists (Corporatists) ANY DAY, ANY TIME, ALL DAY, ALL THE TIME.
If we put Republicans in charge of both chambers of the Congress and the White House, then we will see another economic crash and a *major* recession that will eventually lead to another Wall Street bailout. I guarantee it.
Fear and smear? (What have the republicans been doing? Sweet talking?) HA
Romney says Obama is out of touch (look who is talking) HA
Romney is accusing others of what he himself is doing or is going to do . No bigger loser since ....... McCain/Palin.
Rudy, that is bull and you know it.
I know that. That is why I pointed out your error.
I hope you are not denying that Republicans chastised Pres. Obama for withdrawing out of Iraq in accordance with the new SOFA that Bush negotiated immediately after the Nov. 2008 election? Let me give you some advice. Don't do it. Do your homework, instead.
Dominican mama 4 Obama (the real one)
... I believe that if President Obama started out a bit incredulous at the GOP's flat out refusal to assist in the recovery...
Almost believable, but there's one small little detail that really turns the " The Republicans are obstructing Progress" theory out the window.
Most all of the damage was done in the first 2 years when Republicans were functionally shut-out of Washington. What about all of the free spending and legislating during 2009 and 2010? Can't blame the Republicans. Does Obama take credit for anything except Bin Laden?
...Republicans didn't run on cutting spending, they ran on jobs....
Have you ever heard of The Tea Party? Do you think they are a "Jobs" movement?!?
Many of the freshmen Republicans from 2010 elections were "Tea Party" Republicans. Sent there to cut government spending.
Four and the door: I am curious as to who fed you the Kool Aid. Surely you cannot seriously believe that tripe. Spend the next 4 years making the Republican party something to be proud of again, find some candidates who are willing to work and compromise when needed for the good of the country and stop bringing up these long ago decided upon social issues which at this point in time are only detriments to rebuilding and refocusing the American economy.
BOTH Mitt Romney and Barracks Obama are Goldman Sachs candidates. It's a puppet show folks. Either way we are back to having wall street run the show. We need to eliminate corporate and special intrest groups from the voting proccess. Until that happens the people of this country will never have any real say in what goes on in the white house. Our foreign policy is killing this country. We need a president who won't sell us out.
