Santorum favors female members of Augusta golf club

(CNN) – Rick Santorum went to the tee Thursday evening, weighing in on a golf controversy that earlier attracted the attention of the White House and other GOP presidential hopefuls.

The Augusta National Golf Club's tradition of admitting only male members has been highlighted by speculation around how the club will handle Virginia Rometty, the new CEO of IBM, a major Masters
Tournament sponsor. The club hosts the tournament and typically offers the iconic green jacket to the officers of the club's major sponsors.

"I encourage Augusta to accept women members, but I recognize their right as a private organization to decide for themselves," he said in a statement e-mailed to reporters.

The club, which opened in 1933, allows women to play as guests but not as members.

President Barack Obama's "personal opinion is women should be admitted," said Jay Carney, the White House Press Secretary, earlier on Thursday. Mitt Romney said that if he ran the club, he would admit women, and Newt Gingrich said his wife, Callista, a golfer herself, would be a "great member."

- CNN Senior Correspondent Joe Johns contributed to this report.

The only reason he is even commenting on this non-issue is for political reasons... guaranteed he could care less. Leave the club be. It's a private club. Get over it. Curves for Women has 4+ million members- all women. No guy is making issues with this... seriously.

So let me get this straight ... women are qualified to join the golf club but are too irresponsible to make their own decisions on their reproductive and contraception choices? The GOP really are out of touch.

Trying to turn around the image that Republicans now have with the (war on women).

They already understand how you people think.

Those "boy clubs" are a little creepy. I see a bunch of old men sitting around a steam room casually giving each other the eye while they chat about "manly" things...

During military exercises in Europe I once had the opportunity to relax in a steam room in Bavaria. Four attractive women entered the room and the view improved considerably. Somebody from Augusta needs to visit Bavaria.

in the present political climate with the GOP and female voters even a nutjob like Santorum knows better than to come out against women joining Augusta.

Oh goody. He thinks women should be able to join an elitist club, but they can't be counted on to choose their own contraceptive. Talk about a stepford world.

As long as the women run around the club barefoot and pregnant, santorum shouldn't have an issue with them.

Really? That makes you even more of a tyrannical hypocrite. This from a man who wants to tell women that they can't use contraceptives and forget about an abortion if your life or the baby's or you are rape and the list goes on.
Sorry buddy but it's way too late for you to fake that you care about women and what happens to them when you have been putting your thumb down on us and have kept the pressure on!!

OH, really Rick? First you declare that women should stay home and take care of the kids. Now you say it's OK for them to bust the Men's Golf Club of Augusta? This IS pandering at its finest, coming from a totally irrelevant, confused loser.

"I encourage Augusta to accept women members, but I recognize their right as a private organization to decide for themselves,"

GOP speak for: I'm too scared to speak my mind and this way I can flip-flop between admiting and not admiting.
