Romney responds to Santorum's suspended campaign

(CNN) – Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney released a statement shortly after opponent Rick Santorum announced a suspension to his campaign on Tuesday, praising Santorum for his presidential bid.

"Senator Santorum is an able and worthy competitor, and I congratulate him on the campaign he ran. He has proven himself to be an important voice in our party and in the nation. We both recognize that what is most important is putting the failures of the last three years behind us and setting America back on the path to prosperity," Romney said in the statement.

Santorum spoke to Romney prior to his announcement Tuesday, according to a Republican source, but did not mention Romney in his speech.

An endorsement of Romney, however, "is not a inevitability," Santorum's spokesman Hogan Gidley told CNN.

He added Romney's campaign reached out to Santorum's team to schedule a meeting and discuss a possible endorsement.

"Mitt would like it to happen sooner rather than later," Gidley said.

– CNN Anchor Ashleigh Banfield contributed to this report.

  2. Is Mitt a Git?

Oh, so how he praises Santorum after putting out all those negative ads against him–only because he has suspended his campaign.

Bask in the light for a little longer, Mitt, before it all goes dark in November.

Back to prosperity, huh? Seems to me that Mitt and his crowd did fairly well for themselves this past decade - all things considered.

  4. The REAL Truth.. (not the imposter)

Santorum was neither worthy nor able. Had he been, he would not have suspended his campaign efforts. He'd have it sown up by now. Come to think of it, there isn't a single "worthy and able" GOP candidate yet.. except Ron Paul, and he is be blatantly excluded and defrauded out of it.

    Santorum about Mitt Romney:
"This is someone who doesn't have a core. He's been on both sides of almost every single issue in the past ten years."

    - – That's fellow republican Rick Santorum basically calling Rmoney a grand opportunist and liar.

Of course he will "endorse" him later but here you get the truth for once.

Spoken with sincerity, I'm sure. Time to shake the Etch-a-Sketch, Mittens, you have that issue with women, so get out there and let them know how much you respect their right to choose. Oh wait....no, that would blow it with the fringie righties that you need on your side. Oh my, what a pickle you are in!

The past three years has been the clean of the Bush and GOP mess they made. Housing, Iraq and spending like a bunch of drunks.

Now they want to blame all the mess on Obama like he could instantly fix things. It takes time and things are slowly improving.
