Santorum cancels some events Tuesday after daughter released from hospital

(CNN) – Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum will delay his return to the campaign trail in Pennsylvania after his daughter was released from the hospital Monday night.

Santorum canceled events Tuesday morning at a sporting club in Bedford and the law school he attended in Carlisle.

In a statement released after midnight, the campaign instead added an unspecified event Tuesday afternoon at a hotel in Gettysburg.

The campaign said he would still attend the evening's American Heartland Conversation on Faith, Family and American Values at a bible college in Lancaster.

Santorum Communications Director Hogan Gidley said in the statement, "Rick and Karen are happy to announce that their daughter Bella has been discharged from the hospital and returned home earlier Monday evening. The Santorum's are truly overwhelmed by the prayers and support they've received".

He said the first two events were canceled "to allow Rick, Karen and Bella to settle in at home."

Gidley said the family released a recent picture of Bella "so everyone could see their precious gift from God."

Bella suffers from Trisomy 18, a serious chromosomal condition that interferes with development. Half of patients born with the condition do not survive past the first week of life, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Santorum returns to the campaign amid speculation on its future. Campaign aides have acknowledged Pennsylvania, his political state where he served in the Senate, is a must win for his candidacy. His once double digit lead in the state had slipped to single digits in a new poll, ahead of the April 24th primary.

No wonder taxpayers going broke - crap like the losers continuing to collect (legally) matching funds to get free room and board for another month or two to satisfy their ego or get some kind of personal revenge on someone else.

    What a waste.

Not a big fan of either Rick or Mitch, but think he should continue to stay in the race. Even though he can not win nomination outright on votes, he can try to stop Romney as well, so at a brokered convention, he can make sure that items he wants are part of the platform,and/or get the VP slot.

Must be nice to have high quality health insurance. You'd think that people like him and Palin with special needs kids would be all about making health care as easily available to fellow Americans, but nope; they take their fancy HMO's and tell ordinary folks to fend for themselves.

I am not a Republican, but great news on Mr. Santorum's daughter!!! Now he needs to consider getting out of the way so that Mr. Romney can concentrate on whipping some Obama butt.

Isn't it irresponsible to not watch your family's nutrition when you decided to have a kid knowing your wife is at the age where there is an extremely high risk of birth defects? He's had plenty of kids, so I think he should know that. I mean, maybe they got overconfident, maybe his wife drank alcohol or they ate too much junk food.

Anyway, best of luck to Bella .. it's too bad her dad claims to be Catholic while at the same time going against church doctrine and supporting torture and the death penalty. He's responsible for her condition, knowingly or not.

As a voter, I would never support Santorum – I think his religion leads him too much. But as a father, I'm happy for him. Few personal situations are as frustrating or heartbreaking than when one of your kids is seriously ill.

I may not care for her crazy father, but that little Bella is adorable! I hope they find a cure for her disease and she is able to live a long, full life. God bless you little Bella.

I'm a fan of neither his party nor his policies, but all my best wishes go to him and his family. I cannot imagine the nightmare he's gone through with his children, and though I despise much of what he has to say, it's a testament to his character that he has the strength to continue saying it and fighting so passionately for it in the midst of the pain he and his family has endured.
