BREAKING: Santorum to suspend campaign

(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum will announce he will suspend his campaign on Tuesday at an event in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, a senior adviser to the campaign told CNN.

Santorum spoke to GOP presidential front-runner Mitt Romney prior to his expected announcement, according to a Republican source.

An additional source told CNN that Santorum, his wife, and campaign manager held a conference call with staff Tuesday, advising them not to grow discouraged.

"We are going to stay involved and stay active in the next couple of months," Santorum said, according to the source.

Another source said family and political reasons are major factors for Santorum's decision, adding that the candidate will lay out explicit reasons in the press conference.

The announcement comes after the former Pennsylvania senator took a four-day break from the campaign to spend time with his hospitalized three-year-old daughter, who suffers from a serious chromosomal condition that interferes with development.

His daughter, Bella, was released from the hospital late Monday night.

Santorum launched his presidential bid on June 6.

Wow, he is jumping out before the Pennsylvania primary because he knows he is done for! Okay, now it is showtime, Obama vs. Romney, this is going to be better than WWE smackdown!

I was just wondering if he was rational enough to suspend his campaign vs. lose in PA and end it forever. I guess he has some rationality in him.

Logic, not a chance. A running mate is supposed to help the candidate by swinging his home state towards him. Santorum is bailing because he knows he will lose Pennsylvania to Romney. No way Pennsylvanians would vote for Romney in the general election simply because Frothy Mix is on the ticket.

Suspending is not ending. If Newt pulls out, it's a new ballgame for Santorum. Undoubtedly, he is hoping that Romney beats Gingrich so badly in the next two primaries that Newt will drop out of the race. THEN, Santorum will activate his campaign again and go all the way to the convention. The other reason that Santorum might have dropped out of the race is because Romney offered him something - the VP spot or a cabinet position - MInister of Religious Purity or something.

Yes, thank God ( goodness ) (whatever ). I'm just relieved the "news-flash" wasn't that they are going to arrest Z (now that would be a travesty of justice ).

Oh, and ( a ) Santo-rum please take Newt with you and ( b ) Rom-ney don't consider any of the also-ran-buffoons as running mates. Find someone respectable like Christie.

If you tell everyone that God tapped you personally to become president and you don't make it through the primaries, does that mean:
    a) God doesn't exist
    b) You are a liar
    c) a & b

Sad to see him give up as he had my vote. Oh well, guess I'll have to go with Romney. Anybody but Obama will be an improvement.

So instead of having our rights completely decimated by Santorum, we only have to worry about the getting a thorough thrashing from Romney. As many mistakes as Obama has made, you can't put a price on hyuman rights, so the man has my vote.

I guess he didn't want to be completely humiliated by losing Pa by a landslide. What a fool to think we would forget what he was like as a Senator.

what a misleading heading. Sick Rantorum has not 'suspended' his campaign, he has been thoroughly defeated and he was about to lose in his home state of Pennsylvania. He did not 'suspend' his campaign but ended his campaign for the republican nominee.
The heading make it sound as if he's taking some time off before ranting again.

His staff probably saw how badly he'd have done in PA.
To save any chance of avoiding huge embarrassment, they dropped out now.

About time, I hope he realizes he will never win another elected position. His political career ended when the people of pennsylvania voted him out of office. It's time we get behind the one man who can win, Mitt Romney!
