(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum will announce he will suspend his campaign on Tuesday at an event in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, a senior adviser to the campaign told CNN.
Santorum spoke to GOP presidential front-runner Mitt Romney prior to his expected announcement, according to a Republican source.

An additional source told CNN that Santorum, his wife, and campaign manager held a conference call with staff Tuesday, advising them not to grow discouraged.
"We are going to stay involved and stay active in the next couple of months," Santorum said, according to the source.
Another source said family and political reasons are major factors for Santorum's decision, adding that the candidate will lay out explicit reasons in the press conference.
The announcement comes after the former Pennsylvania senator took a four-day break from the campaign to spend time with his hospitalized three-year-old daughter, who suffers from a serious chromosomal condition that interferes with development.
His daughter, Bella, was released from the hospital late Monday night.
Santorum launched his presidential bid on June 6.

Even though I strongly disagree with him and almost all his stances, I do wish him well.

No, it means his daughter's illness (and my heart goes out to them on that) gave him an opportunity for a graceful exit. He and his family have my best wishes for their daughter, but as for the Reverend Ricky candidacy, I am glad to see him go.

Well with his daughter just getting out of the hospital, this provides him the best chance to get out of the rest with his pride intact. getting stomped in Pa would have been devastating enough but just quitting wouldn't have been good either. The timing of his exit means he is now in position for 2016.

The Republicans have really done themselves an enormous amount of harm by allowing this primary race to go on as long as it has, and to let the rhetoric get as ugly as it has gotten. They've advanced Obama's chances dramatically.
