BREAKING: Santorum to suspend campaign

(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum will announce he will suspend his campaign on Tuesday at an event in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, a senior adviser to the campaign told CNN.

Santorum spoke to GOP presidential front-runner Mitt Romney prior to his expected announcement, according to a Republican source.

An additional source told CNN that Santorum, his wife, and campaign manager held a conference call with staff Tuesday, advising them not to grow discouraged.

"We are going to stay involved and stay active in the next couple of months," Santorum said, according to the source.

Another source said family and political reasons are major factors for Santorum's decision, adding that the candidate will lay out explicit reasons in the press conference.

The announcement comes after the former Pennsylvania senator took a four-day break from the campaign to spend time with his hospitalized three-year-old daughter, who suffers from a serious chromosomal condition that interferes with development.

His daughter, Bella, was released from the hospital late Monday night.

Santorum launched his presidential bid on June 6.

What a wonderful day. Women everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief now that Santorum will no longer have the chance to dictate what they do in the bed room. Also, the entire country is now relieved that Santorum will not have the chance to turn this country into one gigantic mega church.

They'll be running mates only if they want to spend the entire campaign watching Obama commercials showing them dogging each other in the primaries.

As a native Pennsylvanian I wish Santorum would've stayed in the race until after the Pennsylvania primary so all of America could have seen him humiliated and defeated once again as the overwhelming majority of the population in his own state reject his prejudiced, bigoted hate-mongering!!! That's really why he's dropping out now; he knows he can sucker those ignoramuses down south, but back home we're not so ignorant to his medieval BS.

Romney-bot must be excited...time to buy some new jeans to woo us average "down home" Americans with more phoney one liners like how much he likes the color of the grass wherever he is, etc. Romney is one sorry candidate, GOP'ers! Good luck with that. Of course, you didn't have much to start with.

Feel bad for all these negative people on this site. God bless to you and your family Rick and thanks for running a campaign based on your morals and not what the GOP wanted you to be. I may not be the biggest fan but I respect someone who tried to fight the bankroll of Romney and the nonsense of this country.

Also want to add that I although I voted Democrat in the last election, I have not always done so. Romney was a phenomental mayor during the time I lived and worked in Belmont, Massachusetts. He balanced a respect for what the community already was with looking ahead to maintain economic stability, all the while insisting on top schools and a funded police and fire departments. American could do a whole lot worse.

    Bryan,

Knowing how to make money and knowing how to run an economy are different things.

Would you want Ivan Boesky(the guy Gordon Gekko was based on) running things? Of course not, while he knows how to make money, the money he makes is based on firing people to increase profit margins, then liquidating companies.

I would rather have someone who understands serious ecomomic analyisis, not someone who understands how to purchase assets and bleed them dry.

C'mon Gingrich!!! This is your cue. Your turn to keep this GOP sideshow goin'! And Santorum? Good riddance. America doesn't need some religious fascist to lead us right back into the darkness Bush created, and that Obama is digging us out of.

Some here are just rude, mean, brainwashed lemmings believing in nothing but a political party that has spend this country into a unpredictable future. Good luck with that, Oh you can always fall back to your usual lie, "Bush Did it". Most of you have no idea how bad it is because your reliable news source is a comedian on Comedy Central. That is evident by your lack of respect for another American no matter what party they support. It isn't funny, it is totally serial. Yeah I meant Serial

That's too bad . He would have made a great president . I will now put my support behind Romney , who was not my first choice . I will back any Republican candidate who will beat the current occupier of the White House . Anything is better than nothing , and nothing is what we have now . Good luck and good health to you Mr. Santorum .
    Now , let's get behind Romney .

I'm kinda sorry to see him go. He was like one of those nasty, tiny dogs – no real threat, but fun to watch him biting at Romney's ankles and yapping.
