Romney's claim on female jobs loss: Missing context

(CNN) – Mitt Romney, eager to close the persistent gender gap opening up between himself and President Barack Obama, has begun using an eyebrow-raising statistic on the campaign trail.

"Did you know that of all the jobs lost during the Obama years, 92.3% are women? During the Obama years, women have suffered," Romney told a crowd Tuesday in Pennsylvania.

He made the claim again Wednesday in an interview on Fox News, saying "Over 92% of the jobs lost under this president were lost by women. His polices have been really a war on women."

An analysis of federal labor statistics shows that the claim is technically true but is missing important context.

The number of non-farm employed women from January 2009, when Obama took office, to March 2012 did fall far more than the number of employed men in that period. The total job loss for the period for both men and women combined was 740,000. The number of women who lost non-farm jobs in that timespan was 683,000, according to figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That amounts to 92.3% - the figure Romney cites in his campaign talking point. However, the statistic does not reflect that men constituted a much larger chunk of the job loss pie in the year leading up to Obama’s inauguration.

In the 2008 calendar year, men lost a total of 2.7 million non-farm jobs, compared to 895,000 jobs lost for women. Men made up 75.4% of the 3.6 million jobs lost that year.

Romney’s claim also does not reflect that job loss for women began in March 2008, almost a full year before Obama took office. At that point, women held a total of 67.3 million non-farm payroll jobs, the highest level of female employment of the Bush administration. From that high point, the number of women with non-farm payroll jobs fell for 23 consecutive months, spanning from the final 10 months of the Bush administration and first 13 months of the Obama administration. Since February 2010, women have actually gained 863,000 jobs.

CNN Political Research Director Robert Yoon contributed to this report.

Romney has lied and paid his way to becoming the Republican Nominee. Now he is beginning to lie and buy his way to the White House. I'll be glad to see November come so we can send this sucker packing to his California home to play with the elevators for his cars.

Julie that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Hillary should run now, why wait 4 years. She is infinitely more qualified than Obama. In fact, I hope she does go for it in 2012. Obama is an empty suit who just talks, talks, talks, and only sounds good when he is on a teleprompter. I can't wait for this merry-go-round to end...if we re-elect him, shame on us.

Really? Obama's $3.9 trillion of deficits in three years is a new record for the American federal government. The next closest was George W. Bush from 2006, 2007 and 2008 at $2.0 trillion. Nothing to be proud of, but certainly not in Obama's league.

Good call. I salute your job of cherry picking the facts. You did a fair and legitimate comparison picking out the raw numbers to make a point. Whatevery your point may been, I think you missed it by a wide margin.. I would like to commend you for pointing out that mega-hundred billion dollar annual deficits actuall began and existed under Geoirge W. Bush. Most conservatives deny that such things existed prior to the Obama administration. Bush averaged nearly $700 billion over 3 years. Your figure for Obama is counting the wrong years however because you include FY2009, wihich belonged to Bush. Obama's figures by your comparison would actually be $4.2 trillion.

Finally, I would like to add the final four years of Bush to the project first four years of Obama. Bush's figure would be $3.5 trillion with a final year annual deficit of $1.5 trllion and growing. The Obama figure would be around $5.1 trillion with a final year annual deficit of $0.9 trillion and shrinking.

  4. Etch-a-Sketch Mitt Is Soo Plastic he Makes Mannequins Looks Real

Wow! Like President Obama is telling corporations to "fire people"!!!

3.6 million lost jobs in 2008 alone, and that's under GW Bush watch...the same trickle down economics that Etch-a-Sketch Mitt Romney is asking us to go back to. Remember that!!!!

Ever listen to the DNC chair? "Congresswoman Shultz has also been criticized for what has been termed her "frequent absences" from Congress. In 2011 she missed 62 votes of Congress, placing her 45th of 535 in missing Congressional votes."

Oh, you want to spin facts. Guess who is number one in missing votes in the House? The House Speaker himself, John Boehner. I will give you double bonus as to why that is the case. Nah. Never mind. The Speaker typically casts the very last vote, which usually means the issue is already decided by that time and the Speaker winds up not voting at all.

@ Vic – would you please explain how Obamacare creates jobs for women? Unless, you're referring to an onslaught of female government workers and regulators, I just don't see it. My guess is that most voters – male or female – will ask themselves one fundamental question in determining they're vote: Can I afford four more years of this?

Thanks Rudy NYC for putting these clowns in their place. These guys are willing to flush our whole country down the tubes just because the president has brown skin. Simple minded idoits should have their voting rights taken away. Bush II should be in Gitmo awaiting trial like the terrorist that he was to this country. But they claim Obama is some muslim cell. Bush wrote the formula on how to bring a country to its knees. Romney is gravedigger that likes to baptize dead people.
