First lady stands up for Ann Romney

(CNN) – Michelle Obama became the latest high-profile figure to weigh in on the stirring controversy over comments made against Ann Romney.

The first lady responded on Twitter after a top Democratic strategist and CNN political contributor criticized Ms. Romney, who stayed at home to raise her five sons, as having "never worked a day in her life."

"Every mother works hard, and every woman deserves to be respected," the first lady's Twitter account read on Thursday.

While Obama's staff typically handles her account, the tweet was signed with her initials, "-mo," meaning the first lady supposedly typed out the tweet herself.

Hilary Rosen made the original comments Wednesday night on CNN, arguing Ann Romney was out of touch with working class women because she chose not to enter the workforce and stay at home with her children, instead.

The remarks immediately set off a wave of responses from Republican and Democratic leaders alike, including staff members from the president's re-election campaign, condemning Rosen's comments.

Rosen further clarified her statements in a column Thursday, saying she meant Ann Romney was not the best example on the campaign trail as her husband's "touchstone for women who are struggling economically."

Raising kids is a job (of sorts). She chose to have those kids. She didn't have to worry about them AND FINANCES AT THE SAME TIME. Now THAT is a job. She's been protected by her parents and Mitt all of her poor little rich life.

Any bets on as to whether Ann Romney would tweet on behalf of Michelle Obama? Again, Hilary Rosen was right and this is why the Romney's will NEVER reside in the White House. They make the American people feel as if they have been lazy or irresponsible with their lives – suggesting YOU are a failure because you didn't become a millionaire and most of us don't like that feeling.

MoooShell has taken 17 vacations in the last 3 years. All on the taxpayers dime. I think I would rather have a "non-working" first lady than what we have now which is a "vacation taking' first lady.

This still will not stop hypocritical repub wailing and crying blaming the comment on Obama.

** Obama is really a muslim – many repubs. Religion should have nothing to do with being President – many repubs and Fox regarding Romney.

I would never expect anything less. She has risen above the fray at each and every opportunity. She should be bitter at all of the unfair labels and attention that she has garnered, but she chooses to stay classy. I really don't think that she will stray too far from what she has already established.

It doesn't pay to trash the wife of a Presidential candidate's wife. She's not running for office and to bad mouth her for being a stay at home mom is insane.

dont believe her, she is like the wanna be, obama's think stay at home mom's are bums and non-productive, obama's want to control your kids and make all stay at home mom's work in the pits and for pennies, the obamas hate stay at home moms, thats the way all democrats are they hate stay at home parents.

Ann Romney stated that she has struggled, I guess deciding which beach house to spend the summer would really stress anyone out and would be quite a struggle

Of course the First Lady shows her integrity and inner strength on this and every issue.

Even with an unlimited family budget and paying for nannies not an issue as with the Romoneys, being there and raising children is an endeavor that deserves respect.
But I think the typical GOP stance of whining about being a victim is so lame and over played that their hypocrisy is even more shameless in this instance.
What about the continual attack by the GOP on women who have to leave their children to work to support them?

I'm not sure why Hilary Rosen and the White House are waging war on working moms, but it's a losing strategy. I'm glad that the Romneys have replied to these remarks and Hilary Rosen should apologize ASAP.

I think both are right; Ann Romney is out of touch with working-class women, but this doesn't mean that she doesn't work, being a mother is much work in a country where the father is often let loose to play in the market in public sphere. Unless Ann hired a bunch of nannies when her kids were young, I'm sure she worked harder than her husband. Nevertheless, the family is very wealthy. I don't think the Romney family (Mitt and Ann included) could ever understand the reality of the working class.

Classy tweet from the First Lady.

That one blew up in Rosen's face thankfully. Unfortunately it won't be the last over the top charges aimed at the republicans by these crazed lunatics who have no Dem record to run on. The Dems will run a vicious, vile campaign of personal smears against Romney because they have no positive vision or message to offer..

Michelle Obama is a very classy first lady. I doubt Anne would have come to her defense if things were reversed.

The Lady speaks the truth. It is very much a different world for Ann and working moms. Heck we work and take care of the kids. All Ann has to do is tell her husband what is needed. I garantee you that she does not do half the things that a working mom does. People need to grow up. The truth is the truth and if Ann can not handle it she needs to go back home. This is nothing but the republicans trying to deflect the criticisms of how they treat their women.

Michelle Obama is a class act. Rosen should have been specific in terms of what she was saying. Raising children is a challenging job. I think it was the fact that Mrs. Romney hasn't worked in the private or government sectors and doesn't know the full challenge of balancing work and family as much as someone like Michelle Obama who worked for a hospital.

  22. Republican who supports President Obama

First class response from our First Lady.

Ms. Rosen's comments were misunderstood but if everyone's rushing to Ann Romney's defense why haven't we seen the same response to the harsh and toxic rhetoric aimed at the Obama family and first lady by people like Rush???????

Ms. Rosen's point is that there is a large majority of working families in this nation who have to make choices and financial decisions who do not have millions in the bank – like the Romney's. This is very one-sided and Ann Romney is no victim.

Total distraction from the truth – Romney is not in touch with working families.

What a bunch of B.S. !!! So ... Hilary Rosen is a lesbian career woman, who is raising her children with another lesbian, while criticizing Mrs. Romney for devoting ALL her time to raising her children in a traditional home ??? Too bad we can't fast foward about 10 years, to see how screwed up Rosen's kids are going to turn out !!
