Romney responds to 'stay-at-home mom' comment against wife

(CNN) - Mitt Romney made his first public remarks Friday on the controversy over a top Democratic strategist criticizing his wife for her past as a stay-at-home mother.

While speaking at the National Rifle Association's annual meeting in St. Louis, the likely GOP presidential candidate introduced Ann Romney as "a hero of mine."

"I happen to believe that all moms are working moms, and if you have five sons, your work is never over," Romney said, as his wife joined him on stage.

Hilary Rosen, longtime Democratic analyst and a CNN contributor, sparked an uproar when she argued Wednesday that Ann Romney was out of touch with most working moms and had "never worked a day in her life."

Leaders from all over the political spectrum, including President Barack Obama, swiftly hit back, with many of Rosen's friends even publicly scorning her comments.

Romney's surrogates also pounced on the remarks and held a conference call lambasting Rosen, while Ann Romney herself took to Twitter to respond followed by an interview on Fox News.

Apologizing on Thursday, Rosen said she meant to imply that because of the Romneys' wealth, the couple could afford to have one parent at home, unlike many families in the still struggling economy.

After her husband's brief introduction Friday, Ann Romney took the opportunity to speak out on the issue.

"Let me give a shout out to all moms that are working and, by the way, to all dads that are working. We love all of you," she said.

Ann Romney spoke truth. Hilary Rosen tried so hard as she will be lucky. Because Obama will not fire her and many Democrat bloggers and Obama supporters will continue loyal to her.

Don't listen to him. He's only trying to get you to take your eye off of the remarks by Rep. West. Since Romney, or any other Republican for that mattter, has yet to condemn the remarks, we can only assume that he approves of the regressively divisive remarks.

In general when people talk about work, it is not in terms of taking care of themselves, their home and their family. That is what we do because we want to. It is a lot of effort to plan a vacation, but I also do not refer to that as work. Work, for the average person, is what we do because we need to earn a living. I personally would have a bit more respect for Ann, if she ever expressed a single view point that was uniquely hers. She comes across as a child like. Has she ever had a serious responsibility in her life? No doubt she faced serious health issues with herself and her kids, but then in those situations, it was the doctors that did all the work, while she passively watched. I doubt that she ever once had to worry about missing a paycheck because her kid was sick and she could not work. She never had to give up food to pay for medicine. I am a life long Democrat and I respect women who can and do stay home to take care of their kids. I can respect women and men who are rich and actually make a difference in the world, even if it a small contribution. I just do not respect selfish people in general rich or poor. Sure the republicans want to spin this to sound like the Democrats do not respect stay at home moms, but realistically all the GOP is doing is putting the spot light on Ann and the reality is Ann does not have many attributes that most Americans, including the average Republicans, admire in any man or women, let alone a first lady of the United States.

More pandering. Ann is not running for president Willard. You are! Kudos to Ann for being a stay at home mom. But has she ever held a 9-5? Has she ever had to worry about vulture capitalists like YOU shipping her job overseas.

She loves only the women who are working? What about the ones who lost their jobs because of her husbands companies policies who sent jobs overseas? What about stay at home moms? She is really out of touch.

Especially if you can provide millions of dollars worth of security to make AR's work that much easier than a down-on-her luck Mom who has to work outside the home AND take care of kids, pay the rent, provide food, utilities, drive the kids around in a beater of a car (unlike AR who drives TWO Caddilacs! Oh, the poor Romneys . . . boo-hoo they have it so bad having to raise 5 kids with the backings of millions of dollars! Boo-hoo!

"and if you have five sons, your work is never over,"

Of course not! You have to hire and fire the personal assistant who hires and fires the maids and nannies and butlers and pool boys and gardeners, etc. It's exhausting!

First of all let me say this: as an Obama supporter, I was totally DISGUSTED at how they handled this situation. Ann Romney WAS DUE NO APOLOGY and should shut her BIG, lazy, money loving mouth if she doesn't want criticism.

Having said that- I will NEVER serve Willard and Ann Romney. Never. They are both greedy, self-centered, egotisical maniacs who worship nothing but money. With EVERYTHING Ann Romney has – you would think she'd be content – but this woman WANTS EVEN MORE. Have you ever asked yourself what will happen once she gets to the White House and finds she has to WORK for the American people? Will Queen Ann suddenly be too ill to fulfill her duties? Funny how she seems quite ABLE when she's spouting off her BIG mouth on the campaign trail. The Romney's should not be taken serious in any event and should never be given the keys to our country period.

One question – How many Nanny's or AuPairs did Mrs. Romney have in her employment while raising her children? I'm not saying raising children is not work. It is. It is hard work!! And, one of the most important jobs out there. But, I also know wealthy women who call themselves "stay at home Moms" simply because they don't work, but have Nannys and/or AuPairs who are the ones who really take care of the children. Big difference when you have the resources to hire help.

I believe that if Ms. Rosen had just inserted three additional words: " . . . never worked a day in her life 'outside the home' . . ." in her statement, this would have all played out differently.

I just can't believe Ann Romney raised five children, kept a home and did it all without domestic help. That makes a world of difference.

You realize that Rosen Works for CNN as a politcal pundit, is paid by them. She has never worked for the Obama team and was Hilary Clinton senior advisor in the 2008 Democrat primary battle.

Now try to convince yourself like the ultimate opportunist, Mitt Romney and his camp that Rosen works for the Obama team. If you keep on saying it to yourself, maybe you and the rest of the fools will believe it!

Well, seems like from her own mouth, Ann said..."let's give a shout out to all the Dads that are working, we love you all". Now since Mitt himself said he was "unemployed", this does not apply to him. Ann in essence believes Mitt doesn't deserve a "shout out" since...he's not a Dad that is working. Truth be told, right from her mouth. Would this make Mitt a lazy bum who refuses to find employment? Or is being the President the only job he believes he is suited for? Talk about a guy and his ego. Sorry folk, but pampered people with hired help to attend to their every whim do not qualify as "hard working people". And this man thinks he knows hard work. Clown

Mitt Romney is hiding behind his wife's skirt on this issue. Did he really want that big of a family to keep his wife as a stay-at-home mom or did he not care if she worked outside the house for a pay because he is rich and have a luxurious life of rich people. He kept her busy alright. Many women in this country with children need to work to run a family even if they want to stay home to raise their children just to make ends meet.

People who constantly play the victim disgust me. Feigned outrage over a true statement made by someone who isn't in elected office, yet not a single peep about a sitting rep congressman referring to a large swath of Democrats as "card carrying communists". What's up with that? This non-issue has outed the romneys for the thin-skinned little whiney victims they are, and is a pretty good indicator that they have no place in public life.

Sorry, not buying the outrage. Plenty of women work and raise families without the help of nannies, cooks and millions of their husband's money to fall back on. By the regular woman's standard, Romney's wife is a slacker.

Since the time of our Founding Fathers there have been Presidents who have enjoyed tremendous wealth compared to the general population. Some earned their wealth, others like Kennedy and FDR, inherited theirs, yet they were still highly respected. I'm curious where this new "wealth" litmus test comes from...the "ability to relate" litmus test. Why were JFK and FDR not subjected to this litmus test? As an Independent, I'm not a big believer in the argument that Democrats want our nation to become 'socialist', but history shows that attacks on wealth like those going on now has always been the first major step toward that type of government. Envy is just as dangerous as greed.
