Romney responds to 'stay-at-home mom' comment against wife

(CNN) - Mitt Romney made his first public remarks Friday on the controversy over a top Democratic strategist criticizing his wife for her past as a stay-at-home mother.

While speaking at the National Rifle Association's annual meeting in St. Louis, the likely GOP presidential candidate introduced Ann Romney as "a hero of mine."

"I happen to believe that all moms are working moms, and if you have five sons, your work is never over," Romney said, as his wife joined him on stage.

Hilary Rosen, longtime Democratic analyst and a CNN contributor, sparked an uproar when she argued Wednesday that Ann Romney was out of touch with most working moms and had "never worked a day in her life."

Leaders from all over the political spectrum, including President Barack Obama, swiftly hit back, with many of Rosen's friends even publicly scorning her comments.

Romney's surrogates also pounced on the remarks and held a conference call lambasting Rosen, while Ann Romney herself took to Twitter to respond followed by an interview on Fox News.

Apologizing on Thursday, Rosen said she meant to imply that because of the Romneys' wealth, the couple could afford to have one parent at home, unlike many families in the still struggling economy.

After her husband's brief introduction Friday, Ann Romney took the opportunity to speak out on the issue.

"Let me give a shout out to all moms that are working and, by the way, to all dads that are working. We love all of you," she said.

Mrs. Romney, can you please share your feelings on RomneyCare? Please tell us what part of that RomneyCare you got did not meet your standards or approval. Waiting...waiting...waiting....the silence is deafening. Imagine if your husband Mitt repealed ObamaCare which is the twin of RomneyCare, what would normal working people do without that safety blanket you had with RomneyCare. And...if he is vowing to repeal ObamaCare, why didn't he repeal RomneyCare when he was Governor of MA. Oh, it's a matter of political convienence. You liked it then, but you hate it now. Such hypocrisy.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Ms. Rosen made a poor choice of words but the world will not end. The GOP was more than wiling to allow its members to ridicule Michelle Obama and to make jokes and produce cartoons. No apologies were ever made.

Mr. Romney spoke today after a police chief was killed in NH and four others were wounded. The gunman and a women are dead by their own hand. At almost the same time a State Trooper was shot in western MA. That gunmen is also dead. The stories just kept coming yesterday. If the NRA and Governor Romney wanted to make a new start they would be working to help authorities to promote gun safety. They would join in the call to keep guns away from children so that murders do not happen on school grounds.

It's not that these are particularly bad people, they just do not have a clue about the life of the vast majority of american working people or Mrs Romney never would have responded to the criticism like she did. She genuinely thinks she's had to work and had rough when in reality, as most posts have said, she probably only had to give afew instructions to the au pair and then go back to playing tennis. When it came to paying 10 or 20 thousand dollars for medical care she had that difficult task of writing a check on one of the off shore accounts they hide their money in to avoid taxes or perhaps having only give one of her five kids half his allowance that week, or of course she could just use the change in the bottom of her designer purse. There are lots of extremely rich individuals who would make a good president because even thought they're rich they really understand the plight of most Americans. Mitt Romney is not one of those people because he just doesn't get it and he doesn't get that either.

ok now Mitt since you commented on that what do you have to say about GOP Allen West claiming that there are 80 Communist Democrats in Congress? I think his comment and allegation is far more serious than the one leveled at your wife but like the rest of the GOP you are silent on that matter.

@Peggy, TX. I totally agree with your post. I doubt if Ann Romney has any idea what some women go through. My sister is a breast cancer survivor and worked during her chemo and radiation treatments. She has no idea what it means to drop kids off at day care before dark and return home after dark. I don't resent the Romney's because they are rich. I don't like the Romney's because they are phony. They are out of touch with mainstream America. I will not and can not vote for Romney for President. Mrs. Romney needs to get out of the limelight because she does not appeal the the average woman in our country. There are some things money can't buy and one of them is the Presidency.

    V in Chicago,

According to many sources, Ann Romney did NOT hire nannies. Not that it matters either way...this whole debate on wealth is ridiculous. History and Social Science have shown that wealth does not determine someone's ability to relate and be compassionate to others.

  9. ReallY!!?

Woman In California and others like you. If Anne Romney was not due an apology why did Pres. Obama, Michelle Obama, David Axelrod and Joe "Bite Me" Biden all came out denouncing Rosen, distancing themselves fr Rosen, and apologize to her? They called Rosen and told her she better apologize.
Yet Rosen was the same person who defended Michelle Obama for not working and taking care of the kids right b/4 Obama was elected in 2008. check it out on u tube. You women are so vile, vicious and vitriolic that in the name of disparaging all things conservative or because someone is a conservative, u can attack them for any little thing! Including choice that all women make. The "War on Women" is legitimate but the "war on stay-at-home" Moms is phony? Why do u women continue to tear each other down. Why is it ok to call a conservative woman every nasty name in the book?

Anne Romney is a cancer survivor, and had MS. This crap about her having maids or nannies etc is ignorant and typical of the class warfare that Obama is perpetuating. She suffered in her way just like the waitress workiing 2 jobs. Just because they are financially secure does not mean they do not stuggle.

Do not EVER trust a mormon.

Oh your husband is rich so how could you know what it like to struggle. good grief, my sister had breast cancer while taking care of 2 small children. She is not whining about it or expecting some govt assistance like you are. Did u know for a fact that Anne Romney had nannies? What a piece of turd u all are.

They are going to milk this for everything it's worth and more. Let's see how many news cycles they can interject it into. Not that it matters that Rosen is not a member of the Obama Administration, not a member of his campaign staff, not an official spokesman for the President or his reelection, and not a representative of the DNC. I guess everytime something stupid, ill-advised, or poorly thought our or worded is said by Rush, Beck, Hannity, Bachman, Palin, West, or any number of other GOP idiots, the Romney campaign is going to have to make an official response.

    ----------------------
Excuse me if I call BS !! Cancer survivor, MS etc. Give you that. A challenge for anyone. However, Rosen was perfectly correct in her assertion that Ann Romney has never had to work (outside the home). She has no idea of how to juggle a 40-hr work week along with eveything else that a "working" mother has to do – even if she never had au pairs. And WHAT does this have to with the so-called class warfare (coined by the right) and the POTUS?
Exactly,.. nada, jsut like the rest of the right wingnuts spoutrage. You have NO platform for Nov, so you are reduced to hatred and name calling,

So, because they are rich I should feel sorry for her? Since when do we give the wealthy sympathy or turn them into victims-oh, that's right, if they have an R after their names. Utter hogwash, but, you seem to be rolling in your intelelctual filth today. If she were being foreclosed on, and had lost her savings in 2008 after the GOP-led Depression, would care? Nope. Not a lick. She would be labelled a failure by haters like you, who worship Mammon and would have attacked the Good Samaritan as a bleeding heart.

Women! Come on. I am married and a working mom. It is not Ann's fault that her husband's family worked hard to provide better living for their family. Nor it was Romney's parents fault that they work hard to provide better future for Mitt Romney's. WORK HARD! WORK HARD! and you will get your reward. women stop being jealous at somebody's wife that has money. Be content! and be happy for Ann instead. Jealousy will not make you happy!
I am not rich nor my family nor my husband; and I am happy that Ann's family are wealthy.

BTW the GOP and Romney is going to MILK this for all they can yet remain silent about the far more serious accusations leveled at Democrats by Congressman Allen West. Had a Democrat made the same accusations or said something like there were 80 Nazis in the GOP Congress Mit and Co. would be ALL OVER IT. Yet they want to keep harping on an issue that many Dems including the POTUS agreed should not have been said instead of asking one of their one for proof. There you have it America...YOU DECIDE.

  23. The REAL TRUTH...

@Christine WA – did you actualy read the article above.. it appears not.
This has nothing to do with Romneys wealth.. it has to do with the GOP response to a Dem comment that Ann has never worked a day in her life and how Mitt uses her as an economic bellweather for women. I could care less how much money they have. It's IRRELEVANT. What IS RELEVANT is that Mitt shows jsut how out of touch he and the GOP are with the real world if he thinks Ann compares here "home maker" role (VERY TOUGH JOB BTW) with women who DO EXACTLY that AND WORK a 40+ hour week outside the home. Look at the picture above, She's NOT a happy camper. Misguided IMHO.

Wow, Mr. Gutless finally took a stand on something!!! Amazing.

Enough of this war against moms nontroversy. If you look at Romneys policies, you find that he sides very heavily against women. One glaring example is his support of the ryan "budget". It's fact that Ms. Romney has lived the live depicted in a Lifetime TV movie – very much removed from the life of regular stay at home moms. It's a heck of a lot easier to raise 5 boys with paid help and a million dollar budget. She hasn't earned my respect – especially seeing that her desperate husband doesn't hesitate to use her as a stage prop. I find their phony outrage and glaring cynicism to be truly insulting.
