Senate GOP blocks Buffett Rule bill

(CNN) – A proposal to implement the Buffett Rule was blocked in the Senate on Monday, but proponents of the millionaire tax vowed to keep the issue alive in the months ahead.

Republicans, as expected, garnered enough support to reject Democrats' attempt to bring up the proposal for debate. The Democrats fell nine votes short.

Welcome to the modern United States Senate, where a 51-45 vote in favor of something is not considered a majority....

This despite overwhelming majority public support. This is why 51-vote majority should always rule, and why it is important to support and elect progressives in Novemeber.

  5. The GOP's "Trickle Down" economic policy left a wet spot on the shoes of middle America!

Makes one long for the days when a simple Senate majority would allow democracy to work.

The GOP leadership doesn't realize that this will be even more transparent than the obstructive policy on health care reform?

I'll be around. Where there's a rich white guy in need of another tax break, I'll be there. Wherever there's a brain dead woman in need of expensive life support her husband doesn't want, I'll be there. Wherever there's a country that needs invading for reasons that don't quite pan out, I'll be there.

It failed because of Buffett himself, it is his fault, he has spends thousands of dollars on his attorneys over the years fighting the IRS to get out of paying higher taxes. If Buffett had been okay with millionaires paying higher taxes than he should not have had attorneys fighting the IRS to get out of paying higher taxes but he should have paid the higher taxes. Buffett should learn to practice what he preaches.

The republicans have shown repeatedly they will defend the 1% at all cost to the rest of the American taxpayers.

The Republicans in the Senate are political terrorists – working hard to protect their fat-cat bosses. Mitch McConnell is working toward his only goal "of defeating President Obama in 2012". They've filibustered around 100 times to block all debate and votes for anything to help the working people. We'll have a middle-class revolt at the polls in November and all of these lap-dogs for the rich will get tossed-out!

You don't need a majority when rules allow a minority to block anything they think the majority would like.

no shock here, we know who the GOP is working for. Even though the American people seem to favor it, when the GOP claims they are "doing the will of the American people" it only counts if they happen to AGREE with whatever that will is.

No! Really!!?? Millionaires blocking a bill that would cause them to pay more taxes? Thanks. We, the 99% appreciate your consideration for us. We will remember this at the polls.

Oboma says people with large incomes shuold be willing to share with the less fortunate. Actions speek louder than words. He has family members living in the lowest poverty levels in the world. If he is honest why is that happening?

Who were the 3-4 senators that didn't vote? One dumbocrap voted no and I suspect the ones that didn't vote were dumbocraps as well. Let's get on with something that means something to the economy. Let's bring Obummie's budget up for a vote. The House voted 414 to 0 and when the senate brought it up last year Obummie got beat 97-0. Let's talk about reducing spending not increasing taxes, unless you want to tax the 49% that doesn't pay federal taxes. Fair is fair Obummie.

What'snew. More filibusters than ever IN HISTORY. They have blocked everything tthat would create long-term jobs, they block doing away with subsidies for OIL COMPANIES. Then today, the blocked the most popular of all, raising taxes on the $1 million/year by 4%.

They do, however, want to eliminate social security and medicare and give more to the Dept. of Defense.

    WOW - JUST WOW.

As usual we have the GOP to thank for thier contined disappointments. Anyway this should be as expected. Why would the GOP risk thier fat contributions for the working class? Voting in favor would've lost many campaign contributions and after all they've have theirselves to think about. So the next time you're eating a TV dinner just close your eyes and pretend its an expensive dry aged steak, because that's what the GOP and thier wealthy contributor will be ordering as they toast thier success. What's the point of having money if you don't buy yourself a GOP?

  22. The Greedy Old Pigs declared class war on US!

There you have it folks: The GOBP cares only about the greedy and not the needy. The GOBP cult just thumbed its nose at the bipartisan 70% who want this tax. If America didn't know who keeps standing between them and the government the want, this is the answer. Vote em all out!
