Romney cites 'vast left wing conspiracy'

(CNN) – Speaking to a right wing radio host Tuesday, likely GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney repurposed a phrase from Hillary Clinton, citing a "vast left wing conspiracy" brewing in the media and liberal advocacy organizations to derail his campaign.

Romney was making an appearance on Breitbart TV and was asked by host Larry O'Connor whether he was ready to take on "the media and these nonprofits groups that are working together."

"There will be an effort by the quote vast left wing conspiracy to work together to put out their message and to attack me," Romney said in response. "They're going to do everything they can to divert from the message people care about, which is a growing economy that creates more jobs and rising incomes. That's what people care about."

Romney's choice of words echoes Clinton's assertion in 1998 that a "vast right wing conspiracy" was behind the sexual harassment charges her husband, former President Bill Clinton, was facing at the time.

"I mean, look at the very people who are involved in this – they have popped up in other settings," Clinton, now the U.S. secretary of state, said on NBC's "Today" in 1998. "This is – the great story here for anybody willing to find it and write about it and explain it is this vast right-wing conspiracy that has been conspiring against my husband since the day he announced for president."

Romney said dealing with journalists, many of whom he said were biased, was a perpetual problem for Republicans.

"Many in the media are inclined to do the president's bidding and I know that's an uphill battle we fight with the media generally," Romney said, before praising O'Connor for offering a conservative voice.

The candidate said he was unfazed by the prospect of doing battle with the left's vast operation.

"Democrats know that given the president's record over the last three years they cannot run on that record," Romney said. "They will make this race about anything but the president's record and the economy."

It cracks me up to hear Mittens talking about groups backing a candidate and trying to tear them down. Ask Newt Gingrich whether Mitt Romney has ever done that very same thing......

  2. vote the Tea Party OUT in 2012

the right wing hate machine has been attacking President Obama since 2009 and still do it everyday. If Romney can't stand it then he should not be in politics.

Does this guy become every person he talks to – even to the point of spouting conspiracy theories when he is on right wing radio – a medium that rarely meets a conspiracy theory it doesn't embrace. Then again, perhaps Mitt was just off his meds today.

Romney is such a hypocrite!! He is pandering to people now that he won't pay any attention to if he were to win the election. With his money, he should be able to pay the media.

The only thing that will derail Mitt is Mitts own words.
It's gonna be the shortest train ride in history for Mr. Etch A Sketch.

He is right on one thing though.
The TRUTH that will torpedo him IS a left wing plot....

Please take a moment to thank your local tea bagger for crushing the once proud GOP into elephant dung.

The only conspiracy that's being perpetrated is the mormon church's play for power. Study their beliefs, you'll be surprised.

The MSM and Hollywood is in the bag for Obama, just like they were in 2008. I mean they can't admit their mistake so they have to double down on failure. Fortunately the vast majority of Americans have been paying attention, especially the 20 million that Obama has kept unemployed.

Of course there is, There is also a vast right wing conspiracy. We have the vast union conspiracy and the vast religious consopiracy, scientific conspiracy...if you don't have one we can probably find one for you. The one thing we seem not to have is a vast 'willing to work together to find common gorund and advancement' conspiracy. All in all, this guy will get nailed becaseu as a business person he ahs to be able to change in order to get things done and that shows he can and will work with others but he will be labelled a 'flipflopper' by the very people who want the trait he will ger creamed for having. We are no different than the person who keeps marrying the same kind of person and divorces them becaseu they cannot get along or they get mistreated by them. Human nature...wonderfully fascinating. :)

Do republicans really think they can keep saying the economy and Obama's record are failures? When it has been improving every month since 6 months into his Presidency? Osama? Free trade with Columbia? Libya? Pirate rescues? Lowering the world's nuclear arms? Foreign Policy? Iraq? Healthcare Reform??!!!!! I'd say he has a hell of a better record than any of the republican clowns.

It is going to be hard to convince the 4-5 million recovered jobs and employed people that since that everything is still so bad, like it was under Bush.

Ironic that the person asking if Romney would be willing to take on the "media" is, himself, a member of the media....

I live in Alabama. Went to college at Mississippi State. There's five stations that feature some sort of pro-right wing programming. Whether it's American Family Radio or the local religious station. What's odd is those stations hardly feature family-building shows; it's all right-wing political fluff. Most of it is just pundit rhetoric.
So while there's a "machine" out to get Romney, there's an overflow of Republican radio people doing "the Republicans' bidding."

Is it a conspiracy, or is it just that the vast majority of people don't see the world the way that he does?

You know- through the eyes of people who don't have vast fortunes.

Noooo!! How did they uncover our diabolical conspiracy?! We were going to destroy the world with mandatory abortions of 9-year-olds and environmental legislation! And we would've gotten away with it if it weren't for those meddling Republicans....

Once again, they've foiled our evil plans! I must now go break the news to Satan....

OMG! I wish we had a "vast left wing conspiracy"!
We on the left are never THAT organized
I wish we were as organized as they are on the right!
Could you imagine how much good we could do if we were that organized?
We would have had a single payer public option AND the jobs act would be passed.
Sadly, there is no Left wing conspiracy

The American people will never go back to the failed Bush-Republican experiment that almost destroyed this country and caused a global financial crisis that everyone is still paying for. The people will once again elect Obama to continue the recovery and fix the mess the Republicans caused. The Republican party is so sick with the Tea Party poison. They are infected and don't have a clue what the American people are going through. Obama will win in November and the Republicans will continue to be obstructionists trying to get ready for 2016. They don't care about the country and the AMERICAN people are no fooled with the GOP BS.

You have to be delusional to not admit that most of the MSM is liberal and favoring the Democrats. Look at most political talk shows in the MSM and there will be ONE token conservative MAYBE (who can barely get a word in), and then 3-5 liberals giving the same bogus liberal drivel while they all eat it up. Yes, living in the liberal BUBBLE.

@Truth – "the 20 million that Obama has kept unemployed"
    *****************************************
Do you ever get anything right? According to the BLS, the total labor force is 154.7 million and total employment is 142.0 million. That's a difference of 12.7 million (too high, but not close to 20M). Of course, you probably want to use a different measure of unemployment that produces a higher number than the one used for Reagan (10.8% unemployment) and Bush (recession that cost over 8 million jobs). Obama will win reelection and he will do it by running on his record – not your fake one, but his real one.
