Romney cites 'vast left wing conspiracy'

(CNN) – Speaking to a right wing radio host Tuesday, likely GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney repurposed a phrase from Hillary Clinton, citing a "vast left wing conspiracy" brewing in the media and liberal advocacy organizations to derail his campaign.

Romney was making an appearance on Breitbart TV and was asked by host Larry O'Connor whether he was ready to take on "the media and these nonprofits groups that are working together."

"There will be an effort by the quote vast left wing conspiracy to work together to put out their message and to attack me," Romney said in response. "They're going to do everything they can to divert from the message people care about, which is a growing economy that creates more jobs and rising incomes. That's what people care about."

Romney's choice of words echoes Clinton's assertion in 1998 that a "vast right wing conspiracy" was behind the sexual harassment charges her husband, former President Bill Clinton, was facing at the time.

"I mean, look at the very people who are involved in this – they have popped up in other settings," Clinton, now the U.S. secretary of state, said on NBC's "Today" in 1998. "This is – the great story here for anybody willing to find it and write about it and explain it is this vast right-wing conspiracy that has been conspiring against my husband since the day he announced for president."

Romney said dealing with journalists, many of whom he said were biased, was a perpetual problem for Republicans.

"Many in the media are inclined to do the president's bidding and I know that's an uphill battle we fight with the media generally," Romney said, before praising O'Connor for offering a conservative voice.

The candidate said he was unfazed by the prospect of doing battle with the left's vast operation.

"Democrats know that given the president's record over the last three years they cannot run on that record," Romney said. "They will make this race about anything but the president's record and the economy."

The news media is liberal and supports Democrats. They don't even try to hide it anymore.

CNN has been a Democrat run machine since the beginning. Other than FOX(which gives Republicans a fair hearing) are in the tank for Democrats and will report ONLY stories that help Democrats and hurRepublicansns.

Obama has never been asked ONE question that is hard from any network other than FOX News.

Liberals are by their very nature dishonest win at all cost. The reporters today have NO since of duty to their profession. They are corrupt and have lost credibilityibilty with most of the public.

Obama has a very poor record. He continually harps on non issues. He changes the subject, takes no substantive positions. He skirts the issues. He said his administration would be fair and open. The Black panthers placed a bounty on a citizen $10,000.00 dead or alive. The justice has said nothing. He has made Congress irrelevant. He thumbs his nose at the court system unless it supports his agenda.
About a year ago he use smoke and mirrors to deflect criticism from an author that proved his birth certificate was a fraud. The news media keeps silent on anything that will place their favorite son in a bad light. Truth be damned.

Ask yourself a serious question. Are we really better off than we were 4 years ago? I don't think Mitt is the savior (like Michelle thinks of her husband) but he's better than a community organizer who puts us in more debt each year and is proposing another 1 trillion dollar deficit this year

Kind of odd that every comment is pro- Obama, even though drudge linked to this post.

The posts on this site seem to prove what Romney is saying. CNN appeals to mostly those on the left, and the comments on this site are mostly from those who are on the left and support the President. The name calling and the lack of civility when making comments about Romney also show that CNN is preaching to its choir and the choir is responding.

The fact that CNN and MSNBC's viewers (in both key demo and total audience) together, sometimes approaches the Fox audience, also demonstrates that some of the "fear" the GOP may see in the media may be unfounded. Surveys (Pew and others) show most Americans see most of the media as left leaning, biased, and not to be as trusted or respected today as it once was in the distant past.

The fact that most of those writing on this site cast personal aspersions at Gov. Romeny in un-civil ways with little substance on the issues also indicates that many on the left, although they support Obama, can't cite much of substance about his record to highlight or to use to build support for his re-election.

It's going to be a nasty campaign and with few positives to cite over the last three-plus years in support of Obama, the name calling on this site directed at Gov. Romney is only a harbinnger of things to come.

The media has become way too obvious, they can't not hide the bias any longer. Te media can fool most of the people, some of the time, but they are foolish to believe, that the majority of the people still believe them, they don't. Almost 3/4 of likely voters think the media is biased and dishonest. The gig is up.

The real nut jobs are the lefty posters here. This president cannot run on his record. He cannot talk about the driving force of the economy because it is called capitalism and he knows NOTHING about capitalism. He is a Marxist and there is no amount of twisting and stretching to offset the fact that he is a redistribution tyrannical ruler. You do not sit in the pews of Jeremiah Wright for twenty (count them – 20) years and learn black liberation theology and then declare that you weren't paying attention. Wake up and get off the couch! There may be a position for him in the Chavez administration after he is defeated in November! Time for a knee jerk reaction to my post. Bring it on.

I was shocked to read the responses here...at first. Then I realized what "news" site I was on! Seriously, there's nothing here but personal attacks and disinformation. Romney has SUCCESFULLY run business' by cutting away cancerous union mentality divisions in favor of healthy productive ones. He actually has high office experience as a governor! But I guess the current "prezz" has more experience...right?

Classic! So sad Obama has nothing positive to run on besides divide and conquer. What happened there Obama. No more " I don't see Red and Blue" Mr. Hope and Change brings us all together FRAUD!

Divide the country by wealthy and poor, black and white, men vs women, what else can this pathetic President of ours do to ruin this country? Wait....sorry, I'm sure he will find some Chicago Goon tactic for every no brain demowit to druel over.

Romney is right on target. Informed people are moving away from lame stream media anyway for their source of information. Love Cheney's reference regarding Obama as an umitigated disaster because that is exactly what he is…. I wish the Dems were right and Obama wasn’t clueless on the economy, but with his $6T spending spree America is on the brink of finacial collapse with less than a third of the population paying income taxes.

conspiracy? ehh I don't know. However the mainstream media is 100% for Obama and will continue to throw him softballs. Obama can't run on anything he's dont in three years as President because he failed. Yes, he got Osama which was great. But it was Bush's fault.

@ Mikey – "Obama will win reelection and he will do it by running on his record."
    **************************************************
By all means, please let me know when he starts doing that. I've not heard him campaign on the stimulus (where he later admitted there no "shovel-ready" jobs), nor the Health Care Bill, Dodd-Frank, the forced bankruptcy of DM (and overturning 190 years of bankruptcy law by executive fiat), nor the forced-merging of Chrysler with a foreign company. And I don't suspect he'll be mentioning the 'many' successes with doling out billions to now-bankrupt green energy companies. I could go on and on and on.

No. What I have seen him running on is division - division of class (eat the rich), division of gender (the LIE that Republicans would ban or limit access to contraception), division of race (he announced he wouldn't campaign for the white, blue-collar vote/instructing his DoJ not to investigate crimes perpetrated by blacks).

Remember, the "great uniter" began his career as President by telling Republicans, (screw you) "I won."

Mikey..............like 12.7 million is a good number of people out of work Th true U6 number of discouraged, part-time and underemployed is easily 20mm. Obama's had 4 years to fix the economy. He's still blaming everyone for his incompetency. After the stimulus, he said the unemployment rate not be above 8.5%! It's taken 3 years to finally get it to a level under that. 150k jobs a month on average roughly have been created. The US needs 225k to just keep up with population growth. The US will have unemployment at this level for the next decade at least with younger people never finding jobs if something does't change. Good luck all you young people, look at Spain and its 50% youth unemployment level. That's what Socialism does. Enjoy your parents basement for your life. #WINNING

Funny, how can there be a vast left wing conspiracy against Mitt Romney when ALL of them have been calling him the nominee and congratulating him on securing said nomination. The race is still not over and there is a slim chance that the true American conservative may win, Dr. Ron Paul. Voting for Romney is the exact same thing as voting for Obama, except he's white. He is the architect of Obamacare and will continue the exact same destructive policies further eroding our God given civil liberties.

"President Obama released his tax returns. It turns out he made $900,000 less in 2011 than he did in 2010. You know what that means? Even Obama is doing worse under President Obama."

If I remember right to media will tell you how unbiased they are but there actions speak differently. Case in-point Presidents 13 year old daughter goes Mexico on spring break first question the MEDIA should have ask is WHY IS YOUR KID IN MEXICO and the second question WHO'S PAYING FOR IT, nether were asked. Now if it was one of the Bush's girls what would the MEDIA ask...........................no tell us!

    Vast corporatist conspiracy, more like.

    ROMNEY=OBAMA=BUSH=CLINTON

They all serve the same agenda. They have all advanced this country in the same direction. The majority people do not buy it anymore. They are pro-security state, pro-globalism, pro-feudalism, anti-middle class. All of them.
