Romney cites 'vast left wing conspiracy'

(CNN) – Speaking to a right wing radio host Tuesday, likely GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney repurposed a phrase from Hillary Clinton, citing a "vast left wing conspiracy" brewing in the media and liberal advocacy organizations to derail his campaign.

Romney was making an appearance on Breitbart TV and was asked by host Larry O'Connor whether he was ready to take on "the media and these nonprofits groups that are working together."

"There will be an effort by the quote vast left wing conspiracy to work together to put out their message and to attack me," Romney said in response. "They're going to do everything they can to divert from the message people care about, which is a growing economy that creates more jobs and rising incomes. That's what people care about."

Romney's choice of words echoes Clinton's assertion in 1998 that a "vast right wing conspiracy" was behind the sexual harassment charges her husband, former President Bill Clinton, was facing at the time.

"I mean, look at the very people who are involved in this – they have popped up in other settings," Clinton, now the U.S. secretary of state, said on NBC's "Today" in 1998. "This is – the great story here for anybody willing to find it and write about it and explain it is this vast right-wing conspiracy that has been conspiring against my husband since the day he announced for president."

Romney said dealing with journalists, many of whom he said were biased, was a perpetual problem for Republicans.

"Many in the media are inclined to do the president's bidding and I know that's an uphill battle we fight with the media generally," Romney said, before praising O'Connor for offering a conservative voice.

The candidate said he was unfazed by the prospect of doing battle with the left's vast operation.

"Democrats know that given the president's record over the last three years they cannot run on that record," Romney said. "They will make this race about anything but the president's record and the economy."

Can't wait for the Obama/Romney debates. How in the heck will Romney even remember what side he's on? Honestly, this will be fun stuff! He couldn't even answer where he stood with respect to the Lilly Ledbetter Act, equal pay for women! Are you kidding me? What a freaking weasel to not have the guts to answer that very simple question. What is wrong with you people who'd actually vote for this professional panderer who is incredibly out of touch with what America needs?

Hillary was correct. This country has a nedia that says Obama can do no wrong. He smiles and they take each word as gospel. Wake up America. Take back our government and our country. Mitt will show the way for our great country to be number one in the world. Semper Fi

How about a Mitt Romney/Ted Nugent ticket? Nugent could lock up the domestic terrorist vote and Romney gets the fat-cat money for "swift boat" lies!

Quick. Somebody find the clip of him mocking Hilary for her statement.

Only problem of running commercials contrasting Romney contradicting himself on tape is – there's too much to choose from. It would have to be a flippin miniseries.

Romney figured out that all the liberals are getting together to keep him from being President? This man is a genius! A man like that would be a great leader...why, he could tell us the sky is blue and that fish live in the ocean!

There is a conspiracy to elect anybody but Romney. Obama and Democrats are in the conspiracy. But plenty of conservatives are in the conspiracy too, and they made their view known in the Republican primary. Judging by the polls, many women and independents are also in the conspiracy. On November 6, more than half of the voters will be in the conspiracy.

And what about those hundreds of millions of anonymous money donated to all the ultra right wing super pacs? That anonymous money obviously trying to buy the election is what truly scares me.

I purpose that the liberal media stop covering the Romney campaign. If he is so sure that all they say is nothing but lies, and distortions of his record... the FOX needs to become his sole choice of media. Somehow, I think this snake oil saleman knows he would be no where if it were not for other news outlets... Afterall, FOX was not really supporting the mormon for president early in the race.

To think otherwise is to be stupid. How many in the media have gone to work in this administration? Apparently journalism school is a DNC breeding ground

It's obviously evident that the liberal media has stink on their shoes and hot air for brain matter. No one that contributes and is considered ppro- American pays a bit of attention. Failures and charlatans.

Here is the funny part. The vast majority of the responses to this article are attacking Mitt. Seems to reason he's not to far off on his statement.

    It's too late.

The end has already begun for the donklephant (the supposed "2 party system") establishment.

Weather or not Dr. Paul wins the nomination is of no consequence. The Paul campaign and it's supporters are like Navy Seal Team 6 vs the local PTA. We are infinitely more organized, motivated and educated about the election process. We are winning delegates at an exponential rate. We will not compromise on our values when it comes to the convention.

Our message is liberty. The message is infectious and once infected it is terminal. Once a Ron Paul / Rand Paul / Liberty convert we will NEVER switch back. We, just like the special forces are "force multipliers" we "infect" those around us with the message of liberty and those infected go forth and infect more. The establishment can play it's games and squeeze Ron Paul out of this election, but we have Rand Paul a young man cut from the same cloth that has a VERY VERY long political life ahead of him who we will support in exactly that same way as we have Dr. Paul.

So you see establishment, it's already over. The liberty infection takes hold at the very nature of all Americans and human beings...there is but one cure and that is to remove our chains and we are picking the locks right now.

If the commentary on this message board on CNN online isn't tangible proof of Romney's assertions, I don't know what is.

    Well done, everyone.

Mitt apparently has your little echo chamber figured out. He was right, of course. Anyone with an IQ above room temperature can see that the Mainstream media is impossibly biased.

Anyone that doesn't realize that cbs, nbc, abc, msnbc, cnn, nytimes, newsweek and on and on ....are liberal propagandists blindly obedient to this regime are just lying idiots with an agenda. Like Bob Beckel on Fox they often are just bullies unable to argue their points without losing their minds. It is impossible to have a logical grown up conversation with a liberal or social democrat. Romney = capitalism Obama = Socialism that is the simple choice. So called intelligent people know that historically socialism has ALWAYS FAILED.

Intelligence is liberal is like saying Obama has actually helped the economy. Two false statements. Mitt is right, the media has a liberal bias, and from my interaction with the media (print/TV), they ain't all that smart. (Note the juxtaposition)

Your initial sentence was the "proof in the pudding".... Is CNN going to now announce, every time someone is cited while on NBC, MSNBC, CNN, CBS et.al. that "while speaking to a LEFT WING TV host"? Doubt it. The left CANNOT see how far out of alignment they are with this country..... probably never will. As an ex-Democrat, I have seen the error of my ways. Hope most readers on this site will before it is too late.

Mitt's right, there is an unethical collusion between the media and democrat party and it's been going on for a very long time. That's precisely why I cancelled cable, as I was tired of paying for left wing propaganda.
