Romney cites 'vast left wing conspiracy'

(CNN) – Speaking to a right wing radio host Tuesday, likely GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney repurposed a phrase from Hillary Clinton, citing a "vast left wing conspiracy" brewing in the media and liberal advocacy organizations to derail his campaign.

Romney was making an appearance on Breitbart TV and was asked by host Larry O'Connor whether he was ready to take on "the media and these nonprofits groups that are working together."

"There will be an effort by the quote vast left wing conspiracy to work together to put out their message and to attack me," Romney said in response. "They're going to do everything they can to divert from the message people care about, which is a growing economy that creates more jobs and rising incomes. That's what people care about."

Romney's choice of words echoes Clinton's assertion in 1998 that a "vast right wing conspiracy" was behind the sexual harassment charges her husband, former President Bill Clinton, was facing at the time.

"I mean, look at the very people who are involved in this – they have popped up in other settings," Clinton, now the U.S. secretary of state, said on NBC's "Today" in 1998. "This is – the great story here for anybody willing to find it and write about it and explain it is this vast right-wing conspiracy that has been conspiring against my husband since the day he announced for president."

Romney said dealing with journalists, many of whom he said were biased, was a perpetual problem for Republicans.

"Many in the media are inclined to do the president's bidding and I know that's an uphill battle we fight with the media generally," Romney said, before praising O'Connor for offering a conservative voice.

The candidate said he was unfazed by the prospect of doing battle with the left's vast operation.

"Democrats know that given the president's record over the last three years they cannot run on that record," Romney said. "They will make this race about anything but the president's record and the economy."

Oh how the MSM will writhe in pain when Obama is flushed by the (still) freedom-loving Americans! Mitt isn't quite the angry old man I'd like to see at the helm but he's night and day better than the present usurper.

I'm sorry... are you people denying a left-wing bias in mainstream media?

    Seriously?

Truth – Looks like you hit a nerve and all the "libs" here start attacking. It's been studied (Pew) that the majority of mainstream journalists, esp in Washington, almost always vote Dem. The left has all the major networks, worthless newspapers (NYT), Hollywood, NPR, CNN, MSNBC, etc. and you "libs" still can't believe they report from the left, but god all mighty, you know that Fox News reports from the right (I agree). I'm also guessing none of you actually listened to the actual interview...the "vast left-wing conspiracy" comment was said in jest...even though we all know it's true with respect to the mainstream media.

Wow, a whole website of the vast left wing media trying to promote our president who has basically made the USA a third world country in under four years!

Gee, and every Pew poll and others have shown the media to be in the tank for the liberals. Not to mention people like Evan Thomas and other liberals admitting the liberal media is in the tank for liberals. Looking at some of the previous commenters it looks like some sort of cognitive dissonance. Or maybe it's the simple "dumb or dishonest" paradigm... anyone who publicly asserts the liberal media isn't in the tank for the Dems is either dumb or dishonest, given the amount of studies out there.

So many people make the statement that FOX NEWS is in the tank for republicans. Ok to appease you I will agree. That is one news network on the right side. Now to the left and the Dems back pocket. CNN,MSNBC,CBS,ABC, not to mention Hollywood, Google, Yahoo and the list goes on!! Stop your whining and accept the statement made by Romney is 100% TRUE!!!!!!!!!!

If Romney did more interviews (not on Faux) then he might find ways to manage reporters, however he is wrong to attack them because now they will view him as weak. Which frankly he is.

Most of the mainstream media report their VIEWS on a subject. This may or may not be accurate. Remember, it doesn't matter who says what, it only matters if it is true or not. So don't take anyone's word for it. Verify the facts and don't listen to or watch propaganda.

People in the media are not intelligent – if they were intelligent they wouldn't have to read every word they say off a cue card or teleprompter. The dumbest people I ever met in college were journalism majors. Stupid as rocks. What is great fun though is to read the comments above and count the number of CNN readers/viewers who actually support Romney or the notion that the media is slanted left. Dozens who decry that Romney is a whack job but few (none) who even consider the possibility that perhaps they are the whack jobs. At most there are lame attempts to justify the excessive bias by making moronic statements that intelligent people naturally are liberals. Liberals can't even understand the simplest elements of human nature, instead choosing to reject reality in favor of some impossible utopian fantasy. Intelligent? That is a joke, right? If our President is so intelligent how come he won't show us his college transcript? Why can't he speak without a teleprompter? Go ahead, make your excuses.

New Gallup poll out. Romney 48%, Obama 43%.
People are looking for someone who has actually done something besides organizing division.
Watch for the lead to widen.

When this campaign turns nasty it will be the so called press running it, not the candidates. The media has its own agenda, and it is opposite of what the American people want. The juveniles in the media are so pushy with their agenda that they turn people off, who then turn the media off. You rarely see a candidates complete comment in context from the media, they are either trying to effectively airbrush the sound bites of their candidate or trying to take pieces of sentences from different sound bites to make the candidate they hate look bad. Never the truth, and no credibility.

To be a conspiracy implies something hidden from view. The left wing media doesn't even pretend to be fair anymore. What they fail to report is as bad as how they slant what they do choose to report. Look how they falsified the audio in the Martin affair. How about how they never even ask to see Obama's college records but want Romney's tax returns for 40 years!

I like the way Republicans keep complaining about "mainstream" media and exclude Fox from it when the reality is that Fox has the highest rating of all the networks!

Romney is using Alinsky on the left, how novel, go in among the media tell the truth, because we all know there's no left wing conspiracy, the media isn't in bed with obama (much). The proper term for the media types[quislings] covertly (and or) overtly supporting him is obvious to most Americans, why do you think your viewership is declining and the print media is tanking? We know the polls are rigged, the war on women is actually being waged by the democratic party, energy and food costs are skyrocketing, but you'd never know it from his adoring media. By the way if obama is anything like his idol Lenin, after you've served your purpose, you'll be executed as should all useful idiots.

Hmmm...did a search on site. Can't find a similar use of "left-wing radio host" or some similar characterization.

    Unbiased.

    Yeah.

Romney knows who he's really up against.

You Obama kool aid drinkers are amazing. One reporters statement after Obama's election said it all ' We still don't know what Obama's policies are going to be." Tom Brokow. He makes some of the dumbest statements which are overlooked.
He has no business or leadership skills and it shows.

CNN is being intentionally misleading here. If you bother to listen to the interview (check Drudge, Breitbart), the quote was VERY tongue-in-cheek- nobody was "citing a vast left wing conspiracy".

Go Mitt. Obama is a lying, illegal loving, non-stop-vacationing/golfing, racist, job killing, country destroying, empty suited, narcissist. Obama makes Jimmy Carter look like George Washington and Abe Lincoln combined. Obama is a nightmare, a loser, and a fool. Lets see your college grades and thesis faux smartest man in the room, manchurian candidate with a CT Social Security number and illegal immigrant Aunt & Uncle on welfare on the taxpayer's dime even though Obama is a rich, elitist 1%'er. All of your posts make clear that Mitt was correct – the mainstream media (and people that read/watch it) are either ill informed or liberal. Keep getting those tingly feelings up your legs for the next 9 months – it is all you will get.

I hope you smug, self-satisfied, know-it-alls are going to feel like Pauline Kael did after Nixon was elected. I don't think the one of you could solve any problem of administration or leadership better than Gov. Romney. But the real problem is that Pres. Obama is demonstrably incapable of executive leadership. He cannot even direct the submission of a yearly budget.
