Borger: Romney won't make McCain's mistake

Editor's note: Gloria Borger is CNN's chief political analyst, appearing regularly on shows such as "AC360˚" "The Situation Room," "John King, USA" and "State of the Union."

(CNN) - It's that time in the presidential cycle again. Mitt Romney, presumptive GOP nominee, appoints a trusted adviser to lead his vice presidential search. The questionnaires are readied; the real level of interest of the contenders is gauged (and all public protestations of noninterest dutifully disregarded.)

The candidate's weaknesses are cataloged, both in battleground states and in key demographics. And maybe the candidate weighs in with a guideline or two for the search.

I wrote this morning, that Romney's best pick would be NYC Mayor Bloomberg. MItt and Mike could probably work well together in a conference room. Too bad Romney could never pick him, though. MItt needs a person with a reputation as being a hard liner for VP. That should rule out anything like the "out of nowhere" pick that Palin was.

Rudy NYC, I agree with you, Bloomberg would be great for our country. As a person who sits in the middle I would even like him to consider Hillary Clinton. I get tired of all of this stick to your party crap. Lets see them error towards the benefit of Americans instead of a Palin pick which was a clownshow and Biden who is was too safe. Let's see somebody with some fire in the belly

Jon Huntsman... The Mormon version of Batman and Robin! hahaha

Seriously though, probably John Kyl or if he could convince him, Christie or Daniels.

If Romney picks Bloomberg, this just proves that Romney has fooled them again. All those words about Romney being "severely conservative" - never mind. Deep inside, though, conservatives knew this is coming all along. They did not have any choice though. There are not enough conservatives to stop Romney. It is like a hostile takeover. Romney knows all about that.

I fully expect MItt Romney to pick someone with "fire in the belly", which would hand the landslide to Pres. Obama.

To be honest I like Bloomberg, but I just don't think hes the right match for Romney. A VP pick not only needs to work well with the candidate but also be the attack dog of the campaign. There are two people I think would fit this slot extremely well. First is Chris Christie, if he would leave his job as Governor of NJ which is a big if. I voted for Christie as my Governor and he has not disappointed, in fact he has surpassed my best hopes. He has done so much to fix the problems in NJ its amazing. If he accepts, he and Romney would make a great team. The other possible I see would be Gringrich. Mostly because he is a strong guy who knows how to back the boss and the fact that he would absolutely shred Biden in a debate. Gringrich is the attack dog personified. Those are two who I hope for. They are not too likely but would work great I think.

Does anyone actually believe Romney will be choosing his own candidate for VP? The party and their money men will be making that decision for him.

  13. The REAL Truth.. (not the imposter)

It doesn't matter whom Mittens picks... they'll have to be staunch right wing. And that will be his downfall.
There is no GOP platform, no viable candidate and no chance of success in Nov. The running mate will not change that.
