Romney: Obama should 'suck it up'

(CNN) - Mitt Romney drew new contrasts with President Barack Obama on Wednesday by targeting the president's fondness for golf and vacations with his family.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee said Obama's golf trips make him "scratch his head."

"I must admit, I scratch my head at the capacity of the president to take four hours off on such a regular basis to go golfing," Romney told WLW Radio in Cincinnati, responding to a question about the president's hobbies. "I would think you could kind of suck it up for four years particularly when the American people are out of work."

When asked about vacations taken by the Obama family, who travel to the president's native Hawaii annually, Romney said his family would not use four or eight years in the White House to "see the world." Instead, the former Massachusetts governor said he would frequent Camp David, the presidential retreat in the Catoctin Mountain Park of Frederick County, Maryland.

"I think one of the great resources that the president enjoys is Camp David," Romney said, after the host referenced a recent trip by Obama's eldest daughter Malia to Mexico. "I would anticipate if I were fortunate enough to become elected president that I'd be spending some time at Camp David, and my family and I would not be jetting around the world and using four years in office to see the world."

Obama has admittedly not used the grounds as much as his predecessors but is scheduled to host the G-8 summit there in May.

"Somebody pointed out that I hadn't had any of my counterparts, who I've worked with now for three years, up to Camp David," Obama told reporters in March. "I think that the weather should be good that time of year."

Team Obama did not immediately respond to a request for comment following Romney's interview.

Every one says obama has such a tough job, if i remember right no one forced him to run. And for the record i paid a higher tax rate than obama, and took less vacation time.

Our current administration is running this country like it’s an expanding business. If that’s the way they think it should be run, then I guess it’s within their power to do that; however, when their “business” is not producing, it’s in the red, department heads are spending money like they have it, and the security guards are not doing their jobs, then I would think that the Chairman/CEO would see that he needs to get focused and change the course of the business, because as we all know, the buck stops with the head honcho. He can’t make excuses and blame others, because he’s the owner. He may just need to work some really long hours without the luxury of golf or vacations. He may also need to take a close look at his Department Heads. If the wrong people are in the wrong department doing the wrong thing, the CEO might just need to clean house and start over with people who understand their job duties. The only problem with this common sense approach is that our Command-in-Chief has no experience running a business.

If the country is going to be run like a business, then as least put someone in the office who has held this type of position before.

It costs less for President Obama to spend 4 hours golfing at Fort Belvoir or Andrews Air Force Base than spending a weekend at Camp David, not to mention weekends at the Crawford Ranch. So, Obama is saving on Federal spending more than your Camp David jaunts! Plus, Obama is a family man and staying at home enables his daughters and wife to spend time with their friends like playing weekend sports.

These response are a bunch of crap and thats that. How dare Romney lecture anyone on how to spend family time? And being president does not have all that much to do with business that is really getting old!

I've never seen candidates lie so much about a sitting President. Of course, President Obama plays golf but so what? The presidency is the toughest job in the world and if that's what he needs to do to relieve stress then so be it. Remember when Bush was on the golf course and was asked about Bin Laden (I believe), then gave a stupid answer and said "now watch this shot". Romney has been running for President for 6 years and how many $$$ has he wasted so far. Can you imagine if that amount of money was put toward our debt or starting businesses, or programs that help people become employed, etc. Talk about a complete waste of money!!

What amazes me the most about this comment and others here on the boards is that the President of the US is never actually on "vacation". WAKE UP people, no matter who is in the White House we are in the 21st century it's called TECHNOLOGY. The President is never away from events or the ability to handle whatever comes up in the world.

Check your facts. Mitt Romney is "curretly unemployed", paid half of your rate, and made 100 times more money. Maybe not working and taking vacations is the secret to success.

I honestly thought Romney was halfway intelligent and had common sense and integrity but the more I hear him the more I realize how wrong I was. He has got NOTHING!! All he ever does is slam President Obama but has no ideas of his own other than to say he's the one to fix the economy. HOW? Please explain what you're going to do different than was done under the Bush admin, especially when you plan on having the same people in your admin. He's just another paid for neo-con that is trying to outdo his Daddy just like Bush – WE DON"T NEED HIM! Obama 2012!!

    Typical Republican hyperbole.

Romney goes on vacations with the money he stole by shutting down companies and laying off thousands of workers.

At least for Romney,it's most of his millions that take permanent vacation in tropical tax-evasion havens like the Cayman islands.

Miit, we haven't had an election yet and I'm already tired of your whining and silly remarks. The President isn't entitled to time off? When the GOP started their campaigning I thought Romney to be the lesser of the evils but his out of touch, sniveling ways have me reconsidering.

"Hey real American, it was more than just a couple of hundred miles, it was a trip from Massachusetts to Canada!!!! The dog got sick and Mitt just hosed him off and threw him back up on top of the car again...he was not stopping for anything! The dog then ran away just as soon as they got to Canada."

Did you hear Ann Romney when Diane Sawyer asked her about this and she said that the dog "would go crazy" when he saw the crate because he loved it! He most likely went crazy when he saw it because he hated it, not loved it. I couldn't believe she said that.

If Mitt had an ounce of honor he would quit while he is ahead. After this election cycle he will not want to be seen running in any election again. After 10 years of trying to be president and losing maybe he will create jobs by opening his own business and quit being a vulture, taking away the jobs to China with Dubya and making millions off of the American middle class then shipping his money overseas so as not to pay his fair share of taxes. This man is a rich robotic no-personality dimwit. No substance what so ever. The republicans have to back him no matter what to save face whether they like him or not. Just a shame that they can not think for themselves and realize that they are not ready for 2012. Thanks Rush, Hannity and all of the republican strategist for showing the world the republican party true colors (crazy, racist, and hypocritcal) . They know it and everyone else knows it. Also thank you for giving President Obama another 4 years. He is the only one who makes sense and cares about real people.

When Romney says the resident should “suck it up” what he is in reality saying is that the President’s wife and two young daughters should suck it up and they should not visit far way places or go visit relatives in Hawaii. Appears Romney’s expects a President’s family to subordinate all personal ambitions and desires to that of the President. Romney does this already, he treats his wife as a pampered pet to be looked, taken out for show, but not really taken seriously as a separate human being that may have ambitions or desires apart form his.

This is to the one who in his words "Everybody says the President has such a tough job.If I remember right no one forced him to run." To which I say he's not saying it the American People are. Sounds pretty partisan actually, those first few comments. I also notice that Mitt didn't actually say if it was 4 hours a day 4 hours a week 4 hours a month? Same ole Mitt taking a bit of data and stretching it beyond recognition. I look forward to seeing him on a pile of also ran candidates come November.

Blaming the public for reaction to Romneys being wealthy and saying it is "envy" is rediculous!!! The problem with trying to put a multi millionaire in the White House is that he cannot and has shown that he cannot relate to the economics of lower and middle classes. When did YOU have am elevator for your car? Several mansions in different states.?? Do you think he worries about bills he can't pay or an illness in the family that he can't afford a Dr. for?? Wake up people. He's already threatening to take away your healthcare??What would he take next???

You need to grow up, Mitt. Were you critical of President George W. Bush, who used half his time in office away from the White House? He even started a war built on lies, and then golfed during that immoral conflict. Was that acceptable, Mitt? Mitt, for you to lie and deceive the people for political gain is unpatriotic. Disagree on policy, just don't lie.

Poor pathetic Romney …. his American Vacation experience, where he wanted to show every one he is just one of us, was in reality fodder for a comic movie of a helpless inept wealthy person who has never acquired ordinaly life skills. If I was an inept as Romney is doing basic ordinary stuff like drive my family and dog to a vacation spot, I just might not go on vacation either and instead just visit one of my many mansions full of servants ready to do every thing for me.

@rjs2663, if the government is running this country like a business, and this is something you approve of, what is its product? I guess that I'm a shareholder, so I would like to see exactly what commodity this " business" produces. The truth is, there is no p[roduct, only equal access to opportunity if everyone is afforded that chance. Romney has not intention of increasing access for anyone, since that would mean less for his donors. The notion of government being run like a business is an appealing tag line toa ttract the ignorant and the lazy: the reality is far more complex, and therefore, beyond the ability of the average rightie to deal with. Its too much work, so they declare it a failure and set about destroying it.

Is this really an issue? If Mitt cares so much about the middle class (which he's never been a part of) and the economy then why is he talking about the President playing golf? It's yet another distraction meant to deter the American people from the REAL issues. Romney talks out both sides of his mouth – he wants to help the middle class but opposes a tax raise on millionaries to pay the same percentage as the rest of us? He's pro women but opposes new legistlation for an equal days pay for an equal days work? His actions directly refute his words – WAKE UP PEOPLE!

Obama can't suck it up. He must pit one group against another and blaim others for his own failings. Its a character flaw that has not served him well. Obama is one and done as President.

Okay, let's look at presidental vacation time for recent presidents at this point in each of their terms.
Obama 61 days, GW Bush 180 days, Clinton 28 days, Reagan 112 days. What's his point? To be fair, a presidential vacation away from the White House is not the same as a vacation for the average person. The president is still in contact with his advisers and on call for any emergency.
