(CNN) – Ted Nugent, the rocker whose comments about President Barack Obama have come under scrutiny, will be interviewed by agents with the Secret Service, a U.S. official said Wednesday.
The interview, scheduled for Thursday, comes amid outcry over comments Nugent made at the annual meeting of the National Rifle Association, which took place in St. Louis this past weekend.
"If Barack Obama becomes the president in November again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year," Nugent said, according to a video posted on YouTube by the NRA. "If you can't go home and get everybody in your lives to clean house in this vile, evil, America-hating administration, I don't even know what you're made out of."
Many have questioned whether Nugent was alluding to violence against the president in his remarks.
U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, solicited donations from supporters using the comments, calling them "despicable, deplorable and completely beyond the pale."
In a radio interview Wednesday, Nugent said he was looking forward to meeting with the agents.
"We actually have heard from the Secret Service, and they have a duty, and I salute them, I support them," Nugent said on Glenn Beck's radio show. "I'm looking forward to our meeting tomorrow. I'm sure it'll be a fine gathering backstage in Oklahoma."
The U.S. official said the Secret Service would not issue a statement, nor publicly provide details of what transpires during the interview, after the meeting with Nugent.
The official said Secret Service policy is to acknowledge every American's right to free speech while still determining an individual's intent.
Nugent, like any interviewee, is allowed to bring a lawyer.
Nugent's comments sparked particular furor because the musician and activist has endorsed GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul responded to comments from Nugent on Tuesday, saying "divisive language is offensive no matter what side of the political aisle it comes from."
"Mitt Romney believes everyone needs to be civil," she added.

wouldn't that be something if Obama uses Mr Nuget as a demonstration of the new NDAA act. I hope America is paying attention. Mr Nuget is just saying what many of us are thinking and he's not wrong. Even if he were wrong he has every right as an AMERICAN to speak his mind. God help us.
No responses to this? Anyone hear crickets? Everyone"s scared to talk about this one?
Nugent is a nutcase.
Ted Nugent should not be allowed to own guns.
Nugent will be dead or in jail if Obama's elected? Great – one more reason to ensure that Obama's re-elected, then.
if it turns out he openly threatened the President, he should be charged

Love his music, hate the hater.
A little bit of civility goes a long way. More people should strive for civility in the political discourse. I for one grow weary of all the smack talk.
why do we have to hear from such a has been loser?
I still find it amazing that on Fox News this is a non-story. Instead they are trying to rehash the Hilary Rosen comments on Ann Romney. and better yet the fact that Bill Maher weighed in last friday night and expanded on it saying she should bother getting her a** out of the house. Somehow thinking that the $1 Million to the SuperPAC should be returned. Find it all a bit humorous because the outrage was so phony right from the start about the Hilary Rosen comment.
Meanwhile where is the outrage over Ted Nugent by Romney?? Those comments were a lot more incendiary and violent than anything Rosen or Maher said that there is no comparison. Really amazing that there is even a shred of consistency.
Wow, Mitt Romney runs with a dangerous crowd! He seems a bit too radical to be trusted with the power of the Presidency. Nope, he just can't be trusted with that much power, considering the violent crowd he hangs with.
As a small government-loving conservative I am more than embarrassed by these tea party nut cases. I would say that Ted Nugent should go back to playing guitar, but unfortunately he's not very good at that either.
What a jerk. The Michigan mouth gives washed up rockers a bad name.
I had Mr Nugent 'liked' on Facebook until two weeks ago when he posted some anti-Obama junk. I was shocked how many nut jobs had already applauded his rant, and chose to just unlike him. I didn't care for some former presidents, but my angst was kept out of my personal life such as blogs, and the such. Unfortunately, some celebrities think they are a megaphone with their beliefs, and I'm deeply saddened Teddy is one of them.
So he talks about wanting to kill the president and advocating violence. Hell! if he does there will be some people paying him a visit and he won't like the results of that engagement.
I hope the Secret Service locks up this lunatic who threatens violence and incites violence until after the election is over. Romney should be questioned for why he sought the endorsement of Nugent in the first place. Why would anyone want the endorsement of this gun nut who uses vile language about women and is a racist? Romney shows a serious lack of judgment and should not be let near any public office. He is a destroyer and a serial liar who is incapable of truth about anything.
Consider the source...Ted isn't the brightest bulb in the pack.
"divisive language is offensive no matter what side of the political aisle it comes from."
A backhanded statement to try and flip it around on the other side, meanwhile full of irony.
I'd say Ted has lost his mind, but I'm not sure there was anything there to lose to begin with.
You just shot your own foot off, genius
Can Ted Nugent be our next John Wilkes Booth? Probably not. Booth at least kept his mouth shut.
Amendment 1: Freedom of speech + Extremist Radical = Adolf Hitler, Karl Marx, Timothy Mcveigh, Osama Bin Laden, Charles Manson and 911 Terrorist. In all of the law nothing stops murder: it just gives us a remedy. Whats worst is that these people have followers. Evil exists! It just seems so counterintuitive to the Ten Commandments if he is part of the Moral Majority?
Ted speaks his mind. Nothing wrong with that. He never said I'm gonna kill anyone. Cat Scratch Fever baby.
