BLITZER'S BLOG: Obama orders intelligence community to fight genocide

(CNN) – President Obama took a very important step today when he ordered the U.S. intelligence community for the first time to routinely prepare National Intelligence Estimates "on the risk of mass atrocities and genocide."

It's a significant development. The intelligence community is always charged with preparing estimates on global national security issues. How close is Iran to building a nuclear bomb? Where are the most serious al Qaeda threats? What's going on in North Korea? How secure is Pakistan's nuclear arsenal? How vulnerable is the U.S. to cyberwarfare attack?

“And we have seen it again – madness that can sweep through peoples, sweep through nations, embed itself: the killings in Cambodia, the killings in Rwanda, the killings in Bosnia, the killings in Darfur.”

You can't leave out Syria. That clearly is a genocide. I asked a question regarding intervention in Syria in CNN's republican debate that Wolf asked to all the candidates. None of them gave a definitive answer to the question.

  2. The Real Truth and Nothing But the Real Truth

So this imbecile wants to tie up expensive and scarce US government resources on this BS?! This is stuff the UN should be doing. Why the heck should the USA car eabout the internal struggles of every country around the world? BTW, did anybody ask Obama how much this was going to cost and if the Chinese would give us a loan to pay for it?

Clearly, it's an atrocity. A genocide? No. And yes, there is a HUGE difference.

What is your solution? Bomb them into submission? Ground troops? Send them weapons? Hire mercenaries? Or have Obama walk across the water and reason with them?

And what about all the other bad things happening in Africa and around the world? Is it the role of the USA to enforce civil behavior and guarantee civil rights to all of the earth's inhabitants? Get real.

  5. FED up

Obama told voters in 08 he would bring our troops home. Obama told voters in 08 he would end the patriot act. Instead he extended the patriot act added the NDAA and now is giving himself the authority to take military action in foreign lands when they have racial problems. WHAT COUNTRY DOESN'T HAVE RACIAL PROBLEMS!!!??? Give me a break. I hope all the democrats are paying attention. We already have out of control spending in the white house. We are not even fully out of Iraq (despite what the media says) and this guy is mapping out the next six wars. WAKE UP AMERICA!!! We are 17 trillion dollars in debt, we aren't paid up on the last three wars and Obama wants to start more? WE, THE TAX PAYERS GET STUCK WITH THE BILL!!! At the same time our sons and daughters come home in body bags. Enough is enough.

    @ Truth –

You have to understand Dutch. You see, it's quite obvious that we (the US, under the guise of NATO) is going to intervene in Syria sooner rather than later. He's just paying it up to give Obama a "pass" – just like his supporters did with the Libya action.

Well your leader, Sen. McLame, is suggesting arming the rebels. He even went as far as saying that troops do need to be on the ground. I'm not for being the world police. If I were a republican, I'd vote for Ron Paul. Stay out of other peoples affairs is a good policy as far as it doesn't threaten our security. Where's your grieving heart for the starving people of North Korea? What's your stance on Somalia Captain America??? Want to go back in there and play police man?

  8. Another Day in the RW Idiot Mines

Syria is an example of violent political upheaval. It is not, however, an example of genocide. No ethnic groups have been targeted for elimination.

Wow...Obama does a good thig like ordering the intelligence community to assess risks to our own national security inherent in the continued destabilization of other countries and the mass murder of thousands, if not millions, of their people and what do we get? Tinfoil hatted flailing and scrabbling from the GOP/Teatrolls who desperately seek to turn it into a negative with strange conspiracy-esque theories and blatantly ridiculous hyperbole that, in the end, just makes them look insane and foolish. Grow the hell up.
