Gingrich’s words sure to fuel speculation of what’s close at hand

Concord, North Carolina (CNN) – Besieged by questions over his future in the presidential race, Newt Gingrich vowed to forge ahead on Tuesday night.

And yet Gingrich’s own words are sure to be interpreted, by many, as clues to what’s close at hand.

Speaking to supporters in Concord, near Charlotte, the Republican presidential candidate repeatedly mentioned how he could be effective as a “citizen.” He also sharpened his goals for going to this summer’s Republican National Convention and promised to make upcoming, scheduled appearances in North Carolina. But did not commit to anything further.

Gingrich’s comments came as presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney swept all five of Tuesday’s Republican primaries.

Before those wins, Gingrich’s campaign signaled that the candidate would reassess his standing after the primary results.

He spoke to reporters earlier Tuesday after touring the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, but Gingrich refused to take questions later in the day. The former House Speaker said he would formally engage reporters at the Concord event.

He did not.

“You said earlier you would take questions from the press,” CNN asked Gingrich.

“I know, but I decided the results were clear enough I think I gave you your answer,” the candidate responded.

In the Concord speech itself, Gingrich echoed the sentiment about a period of reassessment.

“We are going to think carefully about how we can be the most helpful to this country,” the candidate said.

And yet Gingrich repeatedly talked about his potential effectiveness as person seemingly not in power.

“We want you to know that, as citizens, we’re going to be right there, shoulder-by-shoulder, with you,” Gingrich told the crowd. “And that as we think through how we can best be effective citizens over the next week or two, that we’re going to rely on you for help and you for advice.”

After his speech, talking one-on-one to supporters, Gingrich echoed the line.

“I think there's a point where we have to be realistic about what you can accomplish,” Gingrich specifically told one man in the crowd, adding, “Well as a citizen, you can have all of my ideas on a regular basis. I'm not going to back off at all."

Though the candidate continued to say he would go on to the GOP convention, he sharpened his goal for going there.

“We are committed to doing everything we can to ensure that conservatism is, in fact, fully represented in Tampa, is fully represented in the campaign, and is fully represented in the next administration,” Gingrich said.

Meanwhile, Gingrich was very specific on at least one issue.

“I want to be vividly clear: we have, I think, 23 events altogether here in North Carolina this week,” Gingrich said. “We are going to be at 23 events here in North Carolina this week.”

“Well as a citizen, you can have all of my ideas on a regular basis. I'm not going to back off at all."

In other words, he is looking to get his gig back on Fox News. As someone who loves a good laugh, I cannot wait to hear more of his 'ideas'.

Hang in there Newt. Any vote or delegate taken away from Mittens is a good one!!! Ron Paul is actually only about a hundred delegates behind (in the real race, not the CNN fantasy polls) Romney. The contest in California and Texas alone could change things drastically. At any rate, if we only have the choice between Romney and Obama in the general election we can pretty much count on four more years of the same nonsense we are already sick of, as they are both Goldman Sachs puppets.

The message Santa Newt is saying is . . . "I AIN'T PAYING MY BILLS. I ain't refunding my supporters. I ain't paying the guy who cleaned my suits!"

So he runs up a 4 Million dollar tab and ducks out on his promise to pay?? This from a wannabe president?

Just drop out of the race, you two (including Paul). You'd clinch it not by 5-1 and 9-1 (respectively) margin.

If he is going to push conservative values then pure specualation unless I missed something from Santorum I thing the arch negotiator Gingrich is lokking to meld togohter Himself Santorum and Ron Paul in the hope that the convention will choose a more right wing leaning person as the presidential candidate. QED i think in the end he will back Santirum if his wheeling and dealing behind the scenes works.
    Regards.

I think Gingrich is just soaking in the moment as much as he can, he gets to travel the U.S., visit monuments and parks. He knows this is the end of his presidential run and quite possibly his career.

I have always liked Newt. He is intelligent and will keep your attention on any subject. But, the presidency requires many more unique decisive attributes that a president has to have deal with the high paced views and actions of all the countries of todays world. Mitt has those attributes. I was also scared with the Romney care situation of the post and researched it thoroughly. Romney amits the many istakes that Romey cares has caused including financial. He also admits this is definitely not something for the restof the nation s a whole. He admits his mistake on Romney mandated care and refutes Obama care. Obama cannot admit his mistake on Obama care and I am afraid that even the Supreme Court refusing Obama care would not be sufficient for Obama. At least Romney is man enough to admit it. With this cleared up, I feel much better about Romney and his real concerns bout health care and can trust him on fixing it the right way!!

Who is paying for all this stuff and why can't he figure out this country does not want him in government? Only impact he can have now is to help the democrats by draomimg positive attention & support away from Mitt... His run has been a waste of $ since day 1.

    You still around Gingrich?

You are an adulterer and should be no where near the Presidency.
Your wife # 3 is an adulteress and should be no where near the honourable position as First Lady.

    Neither of you have morals.
