Osteen: Romney is a Christian

(CNN) – Famed pastor Joel Osteen reiterated his position that Mitt Romney is a Christian on Tuesday, saying as long as the likely GOP presidential nominee believes that Jesus is the Son of God then he subscribes to the Christian faith.

"When I hear Mitt Romney say that he believes that Jesus is the Son of God–that he's the Christ, raised from the dead, that he's his Savior–that's good enough for me," Osteen said in an interview to air on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer."

While Osteen described the Mormon faith as "not traditional Christianity," he said he believes Mormons fall under the Christian tent.

"Mormonism is a little different, but I still see them as brothers in Christ," the pastor argued.

Romney's faith has largely remained an outlier in this presidential cycle, though some have expressed skepticism at the likely Republican nominee's religious views.

A leading Baptist pastor in Dallas, for example, made headlines in October when he urged Republicans to vote against Romney, saying voters should elect what he called a Christian, not a Mormon. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints identify themselves as Christians.

More recently, some students at the evangelical Liberty University have taken issue with Romney being tapped to deliver the school's commencement address in May.

Recent polls, however, show a majority of Americans are open to having a Mormon as president.

Romney is not the only one who has taken heat over his faith. Polls have shown a small minority of Americans have questioned whether President Barack Obama is a Christian.

Countering the speculation, Osteen said Tuesday he has spent time with the president and has no doubt about his faith.

"I believe with all my heart that he's a Christian, as he says he is," Osteen said.

Note to Osteen..... I don't care....I'd rather see an atheist run than a hypocritical Jesus freak.

Why hasn't Pastor Osteen said as much about President Obama? Maybe I just don't remember him saying it.

Shauna works for Obama. I think it is funny that people on here think Mormonism is a cult, but they know nothing about Mormonism. The blind leading the blind.

Mormons believe in Christ. Protestants believe in the Bible. Catholics believe in the Pope. Rednecks believe in Jeff Foxworthy.

The Mormon faith is a cult, and I have to disagree with Osteen, Romney is not a Christian. Anytime you alter the Bible, add or take away then, well you are not a Christian. I just took a Spiritual Warfare class and Mormonism is a cult. Maybe Joel should read the book,I highly recommend it,then give a copy to Romney.

Am glad to hear that Joel embraced Mitt Romney as our brother in Christ. Totally agree Mitt is a fine Christian and can be a model of all Christians. Look at the evidence: Faithful to his wife for over 40 years, raised 5 fine sons, does not drink nor smoke and importantly he gave 7 million dollars to charity–thats 15% of 2011 earnings–proving his compassionate heart. No other presidential candidates, including Obummer can match that. Mitt Romney's faith in Christ is unshakable. MItt believes in our Consitutional Republic, one nation under God for our way of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. Lets unite with Mitt and win the WH.

Romney is a Christian that believes in Spirit babies. They are like ghost babies who inhabit real babies bodies.

Mormons do not believe in the Trinity. That would make him a UN-Christian in my book, you know the Bible.

Robmey uses a book of Mormon, not a bible as his first choice. What does that say, is a man being put first before the Lord?

  14. Penobscot is wrong

@Penobscot: Mormons believe in the Book of Mormon. It is extra biblical and therefore false piece of so-called scripture. It is blasphemous.

Yes, Romney is Olsteen's kind of Christian – Rich! Olsteen perpetually preaches a prosperity gospel. Those who are Rich are that way because God wanted them to be.

So, who cares what you or Osteen really think of Romney and Mormonism. What difference does it make if the man meets some individual's definition of a Christian? We are supposed to live in a secular republic, which means no religion is favored.

  21. Romney is not My Hero

@ John - "Satan also believes and knows that Jesus is the Son of God. Does that make him a Christian??"

WOW!!!! Good question. We should be more careful who we endorse as being one thing or another. We don't really know their heart. Remember: Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.

  22. Interesting

That should make his gazillion followers (Olsteen not Jesus) take notice. Even the Mormon prophet Brigham Young said that they (Mormons) preach a different Jesus.

A careful study of Christianity and Mormonism will reveal that Mormonism is not Christian. Mormons are Mormons. They are not Christian. Mormonism is decietful and can fool some people into thinking that it is a branch of Christianity, but it is not.

Mormonism is a cult......pfffffftttt!!!! Then you all go to a cult every sunday. All of organized religion falls under the definition of a cult. Protestants boil over the Mormons taking away their members. I understand that. Mr. Preacher Man wants his pockets lined. So he has his Warfare classes and videos to combat it (though it usually is full of lies and ex-Mormons with an axe to grind). Osteen is wise.
