(CNN) – The candidates hit the trail Wednesday, making stops in North Carolina, New York, Texas and Iowa.

8 a.m. ET - Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich speaks at the Gaston County GOP Breakfast in Cramerton, North Carolina.

9:45 a.m. ET – Gingrich visits Lincoln Charter School in Denver, North Carolina.

11:45 a.m. ET - Gingrich has lunch at the Cherokee Street Tavern in Kings Mountain, North Carolina.

1:30 p.m. ET - Gingrich visits Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy in Mooresboro, North Carolina.

2:15 p.m. ET – President Barack Obama wraps up a two-day tour of three battleground states with a stop at the University of Iowa to push for an extension of a law that cuts interest rates on a popular federal student loan program.

2:45 p.m. ET – Gingrich throws out the first pitch at Gardner Webb University Baseball Game in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.

9 p.m. ET – Rep. Ron Paul of Texas holds a campus town hall meeting in El Paso, Texas.

Also Wednesday, likely Republican nominee Mitt Romney holds private fundraisers in New Jersey and New York.

    One well known fact about Newt Gingrich is that he loves zoos, and has been since he was a child. If he had not become Speaker of the House, he probably would have been a zookeeper. I find that to be quite ironic.
