President Obama calls out House Republicans on college tour

Iowa City, Iowa (CNN) - President Barack Obama targeted House Republican Rep. Todd Akin from Missouri in his remarks on student loan interest rates at the University of Iowa Wednesday.

He did not call out Akin by name, instead citing Akin's recent remarks about how the federal government should not be in the business of student loans.

The president did the right thing by calling out the GOP, now they will complain that he is dividing the country when in fact it's the entire republican party. They have been obstructing the president at every turn. If the democrats would have acted like this against bush the GOP would call them traiters. The republican is a joke. I'm a registered independ and I can't ever see myself voting republican

Republicans have done more damage to America than any terrorist group will ever do. Rather than invest in America, they prefer to send tax money (aka, GOP socialism redistribution of wealth) to those who do not need it: big oil, big banks, Wall Street, billionaires and millionaires, and big insurance.

Again, don't expect Obama to dazzle anyone with his plans for the future. What are they? Exactly the same things that didn't work in 2009 and 2010. In any event, his speeches for the next 6 months will be long on politicking and short on vision. He has no vision forward. The problem is, American voters have had enough politicking in the last 3 years. Look at what his politicking has done to our federal government in Washington. It is dysfunctional. We can do better.

While Huntsman compares the GOP tactics to Chinese Communism, the republican redistribution of wealth to those who do not need it is socialism at its worst.

Put them on blast Mr. President. They need to YouTube the Jimmy Fallon episode from last night. I don't know what planet Rep. Foxx is from. Student loan debt is inevitable. Maybe if I were a trust baby like one of Willard's children, my tuition will be paid up front.

"She (Virgina Fox, R-NC) said that she has 'very little tolerance for people who tell me they graduate with debt… because there’s no reason for that,'" President Obama told a supportive crowd of mainly students. "She said, students who rack up student loan debt are just sitting on their butts, having opportunity 'dumped in your lap.'

It still amazes me that in this day and age, the Virgina Fox's of the world manage to become duly elected government officials. Yeah, yeah - I know. Minnesota has had it's fair share over the years as well. I do think that America would be better off if we didn't keep electing the unelectable and then (to quote Ms Fox) "sit on our butts" asking ourselves what went wrong.

Well, Obama – Akin is RIGHT. The federal government is a bloated wasteful bureaucracy that screws up everything it touches... and touches FAR TOO MUCH.

@Fair – The right wing brainwashing took real well on you, eh? Actually, the Government does a lot of things very well, but the nutwings only focus on the problems. If you have ever seen the inner guts of any large organization, for profit, not for profit, government, you see a lot of problems and inefficiencies. It's a wonder some large corporations actually make any money, they seem so disfunctional. But you'd never hear that in the bubble.

“I support extending the temporary relief on interest rates for students,” Romney said Monday at a campaign stop in Pennsylvania...so don't let Obama's political speeches try and represent the official Republican position.

In any event, if Obama was so worried about the young generation being saddled with so much debt, why did he spend our national debt up $5 trillion in the last 3 years? Who does he think pays interest on that and eventually has to pay it back? The fact is, he really doesn't care. His only problem with it is how to get the debt ceiling raised.

Romney did say he suported the temporary interest rates on students. Great, now let's see what the Republican/
Tea Party members of Congress do. Will they follow their newly crowned "leader" of the Party, or will they
just ignore him? Good test of Romney's ability to lead or be led.

"why did he spend our national debt up $5 trillion in the last 3 years?"

He didn't. He spent about $1T. The remaining increases are a direct result of the Bush tax cuts, the massive unemployment problem Dubya/the GOP handed him and the wars those same demagogue conservatives started in order to funnel taxpayer money to the military industrial complex.

"Well, Obama – Akin is RIGHT. The federal government is a bloated wasteful bureaucracy that screws up everything it touches... and touches FAR TOO MUCH.'

No, he's very much misguided and has it backwards. The only reason we have an exponentially blooming student loan debt problem is because Dubya and the GOP decided they would insert the banks into the loan process as part of their ideological nutjobbery effort to "privatize" everything. With the banks maknig the loans and the gov't stuck subsidizing and essentially guaranteeing them, but with little power to prevent them from being handed out, the banks have very little incentive not to just hand it out willy nilly...nor do the schools have any incentive not to jack their tuition rates through the roof on a yearly basis.

THE BANKS SHOULD NTO BE IN THE GOV'T STUDENT LOAN BUSINESS. PERIOD. Their profit-seeking has created a situation in which the old rules of "only the rich get an education and therefore have an advantage" has been traded for "everyone can have an education, but the rich stil get the advantage because we've saddled the middle-class and poor with debilitating debt to get it." Give it all back to the gov't to control, so they can incentivize tuition controls by making the loan money contingent upon compliance.

You mean the Obama tax cuts that he signed right? ANd what about Obama's payroll tax gimmick? And the massive unemployment problem was the one he said we wouldn't have if we wasted a trillion dollars on a bogus stimulus plan so he owns it.

Just hilarious that after 4 years the leftists are still blaming Bush for their own failures. Not surprising since failure was totally predictable. It is what you get when you put an inexperienced community organizer with zero experience running ANYTHING and who thinks redistributing wealth is a solution to ANYTHING, in cotrol of the largest capitalist economy in the world. We could have put the local dog catcher in the WHitehouse and done better.
