Government official acknowledges past Secret Service misconduct

Washington (CNN) - With more reports surfacing of misconduct by Secret Service personnel and other federal law enforcement officers during overseas trips, a U.S. government official familiar with the Secret Service acknowledged missteps by Secret Service agents in the past, but was quick to defend the government’s internal review process.

"We have had employees that have engaged in misconduct," the official told CNN. "People make mistakes."

This is scary, the last thing we need is the Obama Administration redesigning the Secret Service. We could then end up with a didtatorial style secret police.

The secret service needs to get their act together QUICK. Unprofessional and dangerous behavior that could compromise their mission should be clearly spelled out and dealt with harshly. There is no place for this stupidity in what they do. When you are abroad on an assignment, YOU DON'T HAVE A PERSONAL LIFE. ALL of your time is on duty and EVERYTHING you do needs to be scrutinized and of the highest standard.

Republicans will capitalize on this, putting it squarely on this presidents shoulders.Just how much of this was done under previous presidents is not know yet,but this won't go away quietly ,I assure you. There's plenty of political finger pointing to go around, especially in this election year.So let's sit back and see how the hypocrites in the republican party can spin this rumor, they've been pretty good at screwing things up everywhere else, why not this. They should be pros at it by now, just ask em,they know.....

Get ready for it. It's Bushs fault. The standard refrain of Democrat liberals.

The "Green Initiatitives" are a financial and operating disater, it's Bush's fault. Obama spends way to much time and money on vacation. It's Bushs fault. etc, etc. etc. This administration cannot take any responsibilty for its actions. That would be a violation of the corrupt union code which it lives by.

I shudder to think what a Republican would come up with. Oh yeah, we have that now. An agency that has systemic corruption.

Get ready for conservatives to deny that the first guy who was fired was in charge of the entire operation and he was a Bush appointee. BTW. No one blamed Bush until conservatives like blamed the Obama administration.

You know, I really think people who say things like this are so caught up in the mindless and ridiculous divisiveness that their "party" tells them to adopt that they've completely forgotten how to be an American. Barack Obama has never given you any reason to believe that he's Adolf Hitler - and yet, that's exactly how you treat him. What a shame - and what a sad life it must be, thinking such silly and un-American thoughts all the time.

Some of you really need to give it up on blaming the Obama administration. Even Rep. Peter King said that these scandals have nothing to do wth the White House, and people shouldn't try to assign blame on the White House.

With the Romney Administration, I think what you will see is a clearer response than Mitt going on Late Nite TV calling the problem bad behavior by a few knuckleheads. What you are going to see is professional management across the federal government, top-to-bottom.

Agreed. Byt the Secret Service is now under the Dept. of Homeland Security and that is run by Janet Napolitano, a known Obama incompetent. She should have been fired years ago. Do the right thing and get rid of her now before something happens to the President. Send the message that incompetence will NOT be tolerated.

I think you meant dictatorial. And your comment is completely ridiculous. There already is warrantless wiretapping on. The Patriot Act strips away most of your freedoms. Say what you want to say, but we've lived in a police state since 9/11/01. Wake up!

For what? Give me 3 specific cases where she's acted "incompetantly" that it should require her resignation. apparently this misbehavior has been going on for years. A few bad apples won't spoil the bunch in this instance, however, a thorough review needs to be done to make sure all the bad apples are gone and that measures are in place to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Is it? Doesn't DHS cover everyone? FBI, CIA, NSA, Pentagon, and all branches of the military? Like Rep. King said, don't start pointing fingers at the White House. He probably said that because the agent directly in charge of the operation was a Bush appointee.

Uh... Not that this type of behavior is excusable, but do you think that the possibility of having to take a bullet for someone else and that any day could be your last, might contribute to the stresses these guys have and their need for an "outlet"? Do you REALLY think this is a "first"? Or that it should be politicized?

Anyone who has worked for the Secret Service more than 4 years needs to be fired! Either they're incompetent, or they're so blinded by their hatred for President Obama that they're intentionally engaging in inappropriate (and possibly dangerous) behavior. Time to clean house and start with Americans who can put their partisanship aside for the sake of America.

Nah, I think it will be more like, "Goodness, gracious, me! Oh dear, oh dear."

We have already seen how the Romney team handles a minor image crisis. Look at how they bungled the tax return question the first time around. They played hot potato for over a week. Then they bungled the same issue all over again come Tax Day, by postponing the inevitable by filing an extension.
