Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) - President Barack Obama marked the first anniversary of the death of terror mastermind Osama bin Laden with an unannounced trip to Afghanistan, where he reiterated that U.S. troops will not remain in the country "a single day longer" than necessary.
Obama said he remains committed to pulling 23,000 troops out of the country by the end of summer and sticking to the 2014 deadline to turn security fully over to the Afghan government. He said that NATO will set a goal this month for Afghan forces to be in the lead for combat operations next year.

Wise move!!!
The sooner we are out of Afghanistan the better. The most dangerous unknown in the regioin is Pakistan, though.
Its time our media admit what ever one knows. They are in the tank for Pres. Obama. The final proof? Compare how are media reported Pres. Bush's "Mission Accomplish" speech and Pres. Obama's speech from Afghanistan. Seven Afghans are now dead just so Pres. Obama could get his picture from Afghanistan.
I wish he would promise not to stay in the White House "a single day longer" than necessary.
President Obama takes a balanced approach to end the war in Afghanistan responsibly for our country.
Obama/Biden 2012
There he goes "politicizing" things again by doing things differently than the GOBP cult. And succeeding!
Our President never fails to amaze me in how focused, determined, and effective he is and has been in spite of all the obstructive and potentially disruptive talk from the GOP.
Excellent speech; beautifully tied-in to our objectives and the solid (versus hollow) image that we want to project to the world under his leadership. An image that DOES NOT involve creating mini-Americas around the globe, but transitioning governments back to their people.
Let us NOT forget that May 1st is not only the anniversary of when Obama got Osama but also tht of the previous President FALSELY proclaiming aboard an aircraft carrier "Mission Accomplished".
Obama 2012. Because Obama gets things done, and done RIGHT.
I herd someone say yesterday that not only does President Obama have the RIGHT to run on his foreign policy successes, but moreover it is his DUTY to do so.
I couldn't agree more.
Very proud supporter of our American President Barack Hussein Obama.
That should've been "heard" of course. Pardon the rushed typing.
WOW, this is a powerhouse administration, Obama bringing Afghan war to end and Hillary Clinton arrives in China and blind dissident released upon her arrival. This administration understands peace and diplomacy works.
finish.... just get out...... period...no more deaths...no more waste of money....now..not..2014....
Nevermind the Kabul explosions, killing at least six, a couple of hours after his brief visit.
The "BIG" Question of the day is how can Newt defend all the Truth he said about Mitt; a liar, anti immigrant, offshore banker-Swiss bank, Job Buster, the list goes on? I know the GOP spin machine will try to clean this mess up. Guess what? Americans will not allow themselves to be fooled again by the GOPiers' lies. OBAMA 2012.
If we play our cards right Obama will not have to worry about any job that needs to be finished one term and you are out of here.
We can't afford four more years of Obama and his buddies out of control spending.
If having a large military presence in Afghanistan facilitated actionable intelligence on Bin Laden's whereabouts, then all this has been worth it. Barely.
