Biden thumps GOP over Violence Against Women Act

Washington (CNN) - Vice President Joe Biden targeted House Republicans on Friday in the fight to renew the normally-bipartisan Violence Against Woman Act.

Speaking at the Young Women's Christian Association conference in Washington, Biden accused the GOP of "scheming" in its opposition to the bill, trying to find a way to cut down the law without losing points with women voters.

"The other team, the other boy, other folks in Congress. This is not your father's Republican Party," Biden said to about 400 women in the audience. "The other team is taking on virtually every one of the initiatives you and I fought so hard to establish."

Biden initially co-authored the bill as a senator before it became law in 1994. The most recent version up for reauthorization expands the law's funding and protections for same-sex couples, immigrants and tribal communities.

Congressional Republicans, however, argue the new additions have been injected by Democrats hoping to pass legislation under the cloak of domestic violence issues.

"I regret there are competing versions," Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Arizona, said in late April. "Especially since I believe all of us support (the) current law."

Given the title of the act and the political risk associated with opposing it, Senate Republicans reluctantly backed down in their fight against the bill. It passed the Senate by a 68-31 vote last week and now heads to the House Judiciary Committee for a vote on Tuesday.

But House Republicans have said they're drafting a version that excludes some of the Democratic-backed provisions in the Senate version, a move likely to stir more controversy.

While Biden applauded the Senate for renewing the law, he pleaded with House Republicans to do the same.

"We shouldn't even be having the debate," the vice president said, arguing that VAWA typically passes re-authorization with ease. "If it's based on results, why are we even talking about this?"

The VAWA uproar represents the latest marker in what's become an ugly battle over the women's' vote this election year.

While Democrats have been eager to paint the GOP as anti-women," Republicans, notably its presumptive presidential nominee Mitt Romney, have repeatedly faulted President Barack Obama for major job losses among women since he took office.

– CNN Senior Congressional Producer Ted Barrett contributed to this report.

"Wiat a minute! he has grand daughters so why would he be hesitant to support a law that will slience violence against women? "

Because (a) they hate gay people, (b) they hate immigrants, primarily because to them the word "immigrant" automatically conjures the image of a brown person, and (c) they'd rather pass out small pox blankets to the Native Americans. Ok Ok...I made the last one up...but 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

What has the GOP done to deserve another opportunity to bankrupt our country? Bush & Co. passed the UNFUNDED Medicare Part D program that is costing us nearly $2 trillion and, at the same time, he gave the wealthiest Americans a huge tax cut that continues to eat away at our govt. revenue. Then he threw costly 2 bailouts on the fire. It's the exact same formula that Reagan used: 1) cut taxes, 2) increase spending, 3) pray for a miracle, 4) blame the next guy in office for the disaster when the miracle doesn't happen. However, even Reagan finally realized he had to raise taxes again so he did it 11 times before he left office. All Republicans seem to recall is the huge tax cut – selective memory. I thought elephants were supposed to have better memories than that!

Wow Wire Palladin, this one really touched a nerve with you it seems. Maybe if more women understood and supported their second amendment rights they wouldn't need the VAWA in the first place. A victim of domestic abuse cycle is someone who allows themselves to be abused. Trust me, I used to be a taxi driver. I've taken hundreds of women from situations to the woman's shelter. They always go back for more. ALWAYS!!! the thing is a woman can buy a gun just as easily as a man. A woman can call the police just as easily as a man and a woman can pack her stuff and leave just as easily as a man.

Mikey - Unemployment is down to 8.1%, continuing the downward trend that has seen that rate decline a full 1% in 8 months. At that rate of decline, unemployment will be under 7.5% on election day.
    ===========================================================================================
Yes, yes we know Mikey. Obama has been a spectacular success at keeping people unemployed so long that MILLIONS have given up looking for jobs and dropped out of the workforce. We're at the lowest level of employed people since 1981. Yes, quite great accomplishments. When can we expect the Obama commercial featuring these millions of workforce dropouts supporting Obama's re-election?

I fear Obama will open weigh lose clinics and use this type of approach there. Lose 10 pounds in 5 minutes! You don't need that left arm right?

Last week, the Senated voted over whelmingly to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act. Here's how the vote went: Sixty – eight in favor, thirty – one against. Each of the 31 Senators who voted against it were Republican men. Everytime these guys get the chance to put women's health before politics, they fail to. The Republican party of today is a different breed altogether. If it comes down to scoring points with the GOP base or protecting women, they're going to choose the base everytime.

Both the funniest and saddest thing I've read all week. Trust you, you're a tax driver? HAHAHAHA. If you don't mind, I'm going to go with the warehouses full of research and accepted, industry-wide psychology/psychiatric understandings of BWS instead, mmmmmkay? And let me give yo a little hint: arguing as though you oppose the VAWA's existence in the first place, isn't in the Teatroll talking point memos and merely confirms as true the accusation that the GOP/Teatrolls/conservatives are largely insensitive mysogynists incapable of feeling any empathy towards people they consider subhuman, i.e., women.

This just shows what everyone should already know, Obama and Biden are great politicians and I would rather have an intelligent politician looking out for the meek rather than a dumb business man looking out for the rich. Obama has a long way to go and a lot of obstacles in his way, keep going Obama....we got your back, as should all loyal Amercians!

    Sniffit,
A woman is a woman no matter how you look at it and a gay woman has the same right as a strait woman. So what kind of gay do you think they are talking about? Also as far as immigrants, I do not want to pay anything for the "illegal" ones that the republicans are protesting in the bill. Quit spitting out hate and lies and try to grow up.

@Class Warfare – I see you skipped the part about 26 consecutive months of private sector job growth. Just FYI – that's 4 million jobs in two years, despite the party of "hell no", two wars, terrorism, the European debt crisis, the BP spill, Fukushima, record tornados and floods, etc. The Great Recession was closer to the Depression than any recent recession. Compare a graph of what happend in the 1930's with today. We're doing pretty darn well, considering.

Sad that there are so many of the weak minded fox following right-wingers are so willing to vote against their own family’s interests.

The GOP/Teatrolls' policies ARE violence against women.
Yes, I said it...and it's 100% TRUTH. May the conservatives choke on it.

Russ, the Republicans have no bills that don't contain right-wing add-ons that can't pass any other way. That's why the Senate votes them down. And rightly so. Bythe way, do you know how to use spell check?

Why don't you read the rest of the report. You kbow the part about the 152 thousdand people that gave up looking for job that Obama coundn't creat for them and now they have to rely on goverment handouts like the other 522,000 peoply added since the beginning of the year. Our effective unemployment rate of working aged americans is well over 16%.
