Santorum endorses in Indiana race

(CNN) – Former GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum has made an endorsement - but it's not the one Mitt Romney may be waiting for.

The former senator from Pennsylvania tweeted his support Friday for State Treasurer Richard Mourdock, who is challenging the seat's long-time holder, Sen. Dick Lugar.

"I encourage Hoosiers to help GOTV for @RichardMourdock," he posted, using an abbreviation for "get out the vote." "If I lived in Indiana he'd have my vote in Tuesday's #INSen race."

Lugar was first elected to the seat in 1976, but for the first time in his career is facing a serious challenge from Mourdock, who has been backed by many conservative groups and high-profile political figures. Those in Mourdock's camp include Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and anti-tax champion Grover Norquist.

But Lugar has his backers, too, including the US Chamber of Commerce, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels , and pop singer Pat Boone.

Lugar is ten points behind Mourdock in a new poll released Friday, which shows the incumbent at 38% among voters likely to vote in Tuesday's primary.

The most senior member of the Senate, Lugar has faced questions about his residency and challenges that he has worked too closely with Democrats.

- CNN's Steve Brusk, Kevin Liptak, Rebecca Stewart, and Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

Dick Lugar is not the most Senior member of the Senate. There are several more senior Senators, including Sen. including Daniel Inouye of Hawaii. Sen. Lugar, however, is the most senior Republican senator. Please correct.

Oh, so he DOES endorse – So now he'll take the time to rub it in the face
of MITTens – Tell R-Money, Santorum, that you really don't believe in thee
Which is the reason why you are endorsing a candidate from the "far-right" TP!!

I think Santorum did not get what he wanted from Flip-Flopping R-Money. So he will continue to rub his endorsements in his face!!!

Great. More gridlock. Tea Party does not understand government, nor the economy. They don't know how stuff works. It's wonderful having a philosophy, but they are unequipted to govern.
