Poll: Romney, Obama dead even in dozen swing states

(CNN) - With just under six months before Election Day, a new poll indicates President Barack Obama is nearly dead even with rival Mitt Romney in 12 battleground states.

Obama holds a slight two-percentage point advantage–47%-45%–over Romney among registered voters, according to the USA TODAY/Gallup Swing States Poll. The margin is well within the sampling error.

The margin is smaller than when the poll was last conducted in March, when Obama held a nine-point lead over Romney. Since then, however, two of Romney's Republican opponents – Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich – dropped out of the race, paving a clear path for Romney to the GOP nomination.

The dozen states surveyed in the poll were Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.

In terms of performance, 46% of voters said Romney would do a good job handling the economy, while 34% said the same about Obama.

The president, however, scored higher in favorability ratings, with 58% saying the president is likable and 31% describing Romney as likable.

Also notable, Democrats have made ground in the enthusiasm gap, according to the poll. For the first time in the last five battleground surveys, more Democrats (57%) than Republicans (46%) said they are extremely or very enthusiastic about voting.

The results came the same day as a Politico/George Washington University poll showed Romney with a two-percentage point margin over Obama, a difference also well within the sampling error.

For the USAToday/Gallup Poll, 951 registered voters were questioned by telephone in the 12 swing states between April 26 and May 2. The sampling error is plus or minus four percentage points.

People answer according to what is realistically happening around them and their family and friends. Young college kids favor Obama because they are unaware of real life that if they went out today to find a job they wouldn't find a job. College kids base their voting decision on their superficial, unrealistic lives like hanging out all day under the trees discussing philosophy, text messaging, partying and this is the vote Obama needs to win a second election. The rest of us look at our checkbooks and vote according to our checkbooks.

Let's face it, these polls are based more on emotions and less on the issues at hand! Mitt Romney will never be president because he's a poster boy for the wealthy and his goal is to promote a republican agenda and support the very same foreign and domestic policies that have ruined us! For example, Mitt Romney has said time and time again that if elected president, he would repeal financial reform and allow Wall Street to return to the very same reckless practices that have led to its collapse and the subsequent economic crisis!

Moreover, as governor, Massachusetts was 47th in job creation! Well, figure that out! So much for the economic genius! And perhaps Massachusetts was last in jobs creation because 2/3 of the jobs in his state were shipped overseas for profit! During Mitt Romney's 25 years in the private sector, Romney took over companies and made millions in profits while laying off thousands of workers and bankrupting businesses! With the economy on the rebound, I think the last thing we want to do is to put Mitt Romney in charge of running our economy! It would be a big mistake! And then there's the foreign policies! That's another story in itself! Mitt Romney, we the American people will outsource you come election day!

    Whether they are tied up, dead even or lose up, Romney without these blocs: women, Hispanics, blacks, young voters;

Interesting that you would expect women to vote for Obama. He is negotiating with the Taliban. Really? How does he explain this to women anywhere on Earth?
But despite his campaign strategy of trying to change the subject, women, Hispanics, blacks and young voters all care primarily about the main issue of 2012. The Economy. This is where Romney wins.

This story is a joke. The President already has a lock on 250 electoral votes from states he can't be beaten in. Mittens must win ALL of the so called swing states and take devalued solid blue states from Obama. Not going to happen.

Just noticed that this is the same Gallup poll had Romney beating President Obama when everyone else had President Obama winning. I guess this is their attempt to correct their errors. That would mean that the President is gaining on Romney according to their own recent polls.

I wonder how they actually poll, asking people who's conservative or liberal first then rejecting the lib saying these questions don't involve Dems or Independents. How creative, how calculated, how evasive these pollsters can get because of their organizers instructions, remember don't make it too obvious,we don't want any political backlash, good luck now,MAY ROMNEYS FLIP FLOPPIN BE WITH YOU,go break a leg,LMAO!!!!!

What does the Taliban have to do with women in America? And if the welfare and future of Afghan women is really important to republicans, then why did they abandon Afghanistan to invade Iraq?

With a bad economy and high unemployment, this shouldn't even be a close race. The GOP/Tea Party war on women, gays, immigrants/Hispanics, and the middle class can only help President Obama on election day.

@rla, regardless to what you refer to Detroit as. There are plenty of people, myself included that lost our jobs under shrub. We will not be voting rethuglican and we will NEVER further Will Mittens Robmey saying let Detroit go bankrupt. There are plenty of hard working citizens in the City of Detroit, and we will support our POTUS, who has put us back to work. Stop being a racist and think for yourself.

    OBAMA 2012!

Wow. As I read these posts, I get scared about the future of America. The POTUS is a Socialist. Are you? He demonizes business and preaches how the Government should help us Cradle to Grave. Well businesses create jobs and pay people. The Government continues to waste money. POTUS spent Trillions (Not Billions) to create jobs. In fact if you look at what he did, he spent $80K per job he wanted to create (and he didn't even create what he said he would). That was to generate $30K jobs. If you tax that, it wouldn't repay the investment in a lifetime. Nobody in business would have made that decision because it is fiscally a failure. All of you Obama supporters will drive this country to bankruptcy. Even Obama himself said it.... "If I don't get the economy turned around in 4 years I don't deserve to be re-elected". Guess what Mr. POTUS you haven't done crap to help the economy, therefore don't deserve another 4 years to ruin my beloved country.

Nice attitude. Apparently Obama has adopted the same "look the other way when it is convenient" justification.

@Ed Fl. ICAM. I thought I was the tje poorest only person seeing this. Robmey is the phoniest politician I have seen since Nixon. He looks very sinister and incapable of telling the truth. We will be in big trouble if he gets elected. I can't wait for the debates. His numbers are going to sink like the Titanic, once the people hear him and realize he is about nothing and editing everything, he won't stand a chance.

Following the recent jobs report, Mitt Romney argued that 8.1% unemployment is unacceptable and he said anything above 4% shouldn't be cause for celebration! Well, Mitt, 10.5 % unemployment as governor of Massachusetts isn't cause for celebration either! And at least President Obama has an addition 49 states to deal with while you had just one! Moreover, as governor at least you didn't inherit two deadly and costly wars along with an economic crisis and a divided legislature wanting the President ot fail! Mitt Romney you're bad for America!

Interesting how the righties still stick to the ancient stereotypes about college students. Nope, they are voting in their self-interest, since the GOP would double interest rates on student loans if they ahd their way, while cutting taxes for people who don't need it. Oh, and in case anyone is wondering, my company's business has skyrocketed while Obama has been in office, and I'm getting ready to trade up to a new house: having one built actually. Why would I even consider voting for someone who reminds me of every lousy, arrogant manager I've ever had to work for? No core, no ideas, no spine, and no balls: that sums up Romney. Just a mindless set of digits.

@Four and your door, your delusional in your thinking with all these facts, mostly against you republican hypocrites.Stopping funding in PLANNED PARENTHOOD,cutting education in republican run states, cutting health care there also, immigration extremism, giving millionaires tax breaks ,governors changing voters rights and guidelines. It's all there publicly on tv,newspapers, everywhere.Your up to your neck, you republicans in corruption and you're so arrogent,it's overshadowed by your true ignorence in what is happening to your party, not the party of NO,but the party of extinction, that's right,so arrogent ,so vial, not even vultures like Romney will pick at your rotting bones...Keep up your extremist agenda with Nugent ,Rove,Limbaugh,Romney ,Norcrist and the likes and people will leave your party in droves, because your parties politics are turning people who are hard working, intelligent, tax paying citizens away, because they're tired of your dirty ethics and they want CHANGES in their republican party.....

As president, Mitt Romney would see to it that all Americans no longer have to rely on that ever present trickle down safety net! As president, Mitt Romney would propose a tax cut, correction...as president Mitt Romney would see to it that each and every American has seven nannies and butlers to do their chores! That's Mitt Romney's America for ya!
