Santorum endorses Romney in e-mail to supporters

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Rick Santorum told supporters in an e-mail Monday he was endorsing his one-time rival for the GOP presidential nomination Mitt Romney.

Santorum, who met with Romney in Pittsburgh Friday, told supporters the meeting was "productive," and that he was able to fully determine where the likely GOP nominee stood on a wide swath of issues.

"Above all else, we both agree that President Obama must be defeated," Santorum wrote. "The task will not be easy. It will require all hands on deck if our nominee is to be victorious. Governor Romney will be that nominee and he has my endorsement and support to win this the most critical election of our lifetime."

Santorum, who dropped his bid for the nomination in early April, explained he wanted to wait to make an endorsement until he and Romney were able to speak face-to-face.

"I felt that it was completely impossible for me to even consider an endorsement until after a meeting to discuss issues critical to those of us who often feel our voices are not heard by the establishment: social conservatives, tea-party supporters, lower and middle income working families," Santorum wrote.

The former Pennsylvania senator said the meeting - which lasted 90 minutes and took place at the office of Santorum's campaign strategist - was meant in part "to assess Governor Romney's commitment to addressing the issues most important to conservatives, as well his commitment to ensuring our appropriate representation in a Romney administration."

One issue discussed was family, Santorum said.

"The family and its foundational role in America's economic success, a central point of our campaign, was discussed at length," Santorum said. "I was impressed with the Governor's deep understanding of this connection and his commitment to economic policies that preserve and strengthen families."

Santorum's endorsement of Romney could help the likely GOP nominee boost his support among the conservative wing of the party - a constituency he had problems gaining traction with during the primaries.

CNN's Kevin Liptak, Adam Aigner-Treworgy and Kevin Bohn contributed to this report.

The biggest problem with the GOP right now is that it's all about power. Not about helping the economy, fighting for our freedom & protecting our rights–the most important thing for them is that "Obama must be defeated." We need to focus on rebuilding America–this is the most important task at hand. I just wish they'd get their head out of their a**es and realize this.

Acting like adults probably wouldn't hurt either.

To my liberal friends: I realize that this will fall on deaf ears, that you're drinking the kool-aid and don't won't to see the hand writing on the wall, but the end of the Obama administration is near. Record unemployment, record debt, moving the US to the brink of socialism, his massive health care plan about to be gutted by the Supreme Court ... that sadly will be the legacy of this administration. Sadly, we've gone from the Buck stopping with Truman, to Obama taking all of your Bucks and assigning blame to others. It's time for real Change America. Romney 2012

“If Mitt Romney's an economic heavyweight, we're in trouble, because he was 47th out of 50 in job creation in the state of Massachusetts when he was governor. He may have had some success at making money for himself and his partners at Bain Capital, but that's a very different thing than going out and creating an atmosphere for people to create – that create jobs.” Rick Santorum on 3/18/12.

Sorry to say, Santorum's announcement changes none of Romney's history. He is still the candidate who will say anything to get votes and demolish opponents in his own Party with negative advertising. Not the kind of man who is fit to be the President.

Romney's billionaires won out over Santorum's Opus Dei.

How sad for Rick that he lost by being outspent 20 to 1.

He's lying. He can't stand Romney because Mitt is far too centrist for his (Santorum's) extremism. It's all show and no substance.

Isn't it true that Mrs. Santorum had lived and worked with a doctor for five years who was also an abortionist and almost thirty years her age before she started dating Rick? When did all of her views change on abortion and contraceptives? Was that before or after she met Rick? And how many abortions did she have?

So Ricky's going to hold his nose and endorse Mittens.
Mittens has a pretty impressive roster of endorsers: Trump, Newt, Nugent, Perry, Bachman, Joe the Plumber, etc. In other words, most of the clown parade. The Tea Bagger conservatives and evangelicals don't like him and don't trust him but they'll vote for him just because they HATE Obama so much.
Mittens is waiting for Charles Manson's endorsement now.

To endorse by email – tepid. But I wouldn't want the words "endorse Romney" seen coming from my mouth either.

If Santorum got clarity on Romney's positions, he should share that info with the rest of us.

Obama will lead us intelligently and courageously for four more years.

As if anyone with a brain should really care who this guy "endorses." He spent months trashing both Romney and Obama. I never could take Santorum seriously.
