(CNN) - North Carolina voters will pass a referendum that constutionally bans same-sex marriage, CNN projects. Amendment 1 alters North Carolina's constitution to say that "marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state."

A classic case of majority tyranny against a minority group.
Nothing like a little fear. I love the slogan on the campaign button "Protect all NC families". It's so much better to tell some else how to live their private life than to address the real issues facing this nation.
so they vote to ban. tell me is that going to put food on the table or create jobs or help the poor, educate your children? the answer is no and it is none of your business whether jack and steve want to get married. if you have a problem with it, it is YOUR problem. people do not care if you have problems with it. it is called intrusion into something that is none of your business.

I have always loved North Carolina and have been proud to call it my home. Until today. I am so ashamed to be a North Carolinian. I can only hope it doesn't take as long to overturn this Amendment as it did to overturn the law banning interracial marriages in NC (100 years or so). This hurts. A lot. On the positive side- the counties where Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, WInston-Salem, and Greensboro are (the "big cities" in NC) all voted against the Amendment so some progress has been made.
note the wording. MARRIAGE, regardless of being heterosexual or homosexual, is the ONLY valid and recognized civil domestic union. this means civil unions/domestic partnerships are nixed. hetero or homo sexual. not everybody gets MARRIED in a CHURCH. this is not only a gay rights issue, its a general civil rights issue and a religious issue.
Way to go NC!!! This is a huge victory for those of us trying to preserve what made this country great.
Absolutely disgusting. Very thankful i don't live in the south, or US for that matter. The discrimination towards gay and lesbian couples is disgraceful.

When will conservatives/Republicans realize the high degree of their hyp0crisy? Their hypocrisy is so thick, the sharpest kn1fe in the world would be incapable of slicing it. On the one hand, they don't want the government telling them how to live, but when it comes to religious/social issues, they beg the government to tell American citizens how to live. Republicans should make up their mind; do you want the government to tell people how to live or not? If they don't, they shouldn't be asking the government to tell homosexuals how to live their life. Republicans are as irritating as mosquitoes!

Wow!.... I can't even believe this is an issue in today's society. Interestingly this type of BIGOTRY is eerily similar to women oppression before the 1920's and the Jim Crow laws before the 1960's. This is a disgusting show in North Carolina state of non-progressive (and likely) fundamentalist religious thinking. Our founding fathers are rolling over in their grave.
