Obama's same-sex marriage support riles religious conservatives

(CNN) – U.S. President Barack Obama's endorsement of gay marriage on Wednesday outraged conservative Christian leaders, who vowed to use it as an organizing tool in the 2012 elections, but the move is also activating the liberal base, raising big questions about who gains and loses politically.

"It cuts both ways – it activates both Democratic and Republican base voters," said John Green, an expert on religion and politics at the University of Akron. "The most likely effect is that it makes an already close election even closer."

  4. Obama 2012 - BEND Forward America, take another 4 long years of FAILURE

Obama's decision to come out in favor of gay marriage is going to cost a LOT of Democrats their seats come November. Just when you thought the Democrats couldn't get more out of touch with America, they prove you wrong. Democrats think San Francisco is Main Street America!!

Obama is now in the process of leading the Democrat Party into the desert for 40 years. I hope you all enjoy the walk.

Big deal – it's not like they were going to vote for him had he not made his announcement.

Good! I hope they all can't sleep tonight.
What should be breaking news is the teapublikans and rethugs in congress and around the country (governors, reps and state senators) imposing their religious crazy beliefs on women about their reproductive rights.
Gays have been around since the beginning of time and they come in all colors and from all countries (even Iran) but women's rights are forefront again for those tea tards who want to take us back to the 1950s and back alley abortions.

This isn't making any election closer. Everything the DNC and RNC does is carefully, carefully polled and scripted and thought through. The DNC obviously polled and found that Obama would get more votes by taking this stand than he would lose. Do you really think anything at this political level is sudden or spontaneous or even a matter of conscience?

If you believe Obama is taking a risk by doing this, you probably also think the TV show Survivor actually exposes the players to real danger. It is just that Obama is better at it than Romney.

The liberal base is much larger than their bible beating, foot washing counterparts on the right. And they are a minority within the GOP as well.

So the FAR LEFT Obama supporting gay marriage is going to try and paint Romney, supporter of marriage between a man and a woman, as far right? HAHAHAHA!!! This was NOT planned by Obama. It was forced on him by others. Obama has not shown one OUNCE of leadership in 3 years. This will hurt him FAR more than it will help him. He just eguaranteed every conservative voter goes to the polls in November to vote for Romney.

"Do you really think anything at this political level is sudden or spontaneous or even a matter of conscience?"

Let's be real here. I agree with you that they go bananas over polling data and think tank their way to grand strategies and what they think are well-thought out tactics with predictable high-likelihood results. BUT...it doesn't always work. Case in opint: Jabberwocky Barbie.

Now, that's not to say that I think that's the case with this particular issue. Gay marriage is not going to be the deciding issue for the vast VAST majority of people int he country...on either side of it. It's a very very small fringe of right wing extremist fundamentalists for whom it is the top issue in determining their vote. Moreover, I think it's quite safely predictable that the right wing hate machine is going to get overexcited about this revelation from Obama, will view it as their opening to go bananas and will fairly quickly overplay heir hate-hand, alienating reasonable-minded independents and therefore forcing Deputy Doublethink to back off it a little when the backfire begins....at which point DD once again alienates that radical wing of the base (and they'll probably say he came up with milquetoast positions on it because he's Mormon, which is already a base enthusiasm problem for him).

Bend forward, have you ever been to San Francisco? You know NOTHING you are talking about. There is a huge China Town district, with all kinds of influence, and not necessarily with Gay rights. Tons of minorities, well educated and not, and every kind of activity you can imagine that has nothing to do with being gay.

Correct and do you know why it is not? Because most black voters voted AGAINST it in 2008!! So Obama is counting all of his black supporters to compromise their relgious beliefs and continue to support him. This will NOT help him with religious black voters. I can hardly wait for hear what the black preachers have to say about Obama. But somehow I doubt they will betray their religious beliefs.

No. I am claiming it's not because that's the truth. SF has a deep, rich, broad and widely available history and cultural makeup you might benefit from learning about. That you focus on just one tiny part of it in order to define it in its entirety is like a tell in poker: SF's gay population and their culture looms overly large in your mind and takes on imaginary significance that dwarfs everything else about SF precisely because you're a bigot...you give it away. And I say that with the utmost of disrespect.

Like "conservative" religious leaders were going to support Obama anyway? At least Obama took the moral position to support civil rights for gays-something those "christians" won't do.

Hurrah! My President stands up for the fact that the Const.itution covers the rights of Every American, not just the select (religious conservative) few! This is a good day, indeed! It does my heart good to hear that his children are so accepting of their friends same-gender parents! It's very much like my nieces & nephew, who have never been taught any type of bigotry & reject it as a matter of course! We cannot go backwards to the days when "separate but equal" was the law! We can't sit by while "evangelicals" make it a Crime for people to marry & protect their families! How can we tolerate bans on peoples const.itutional rights!? Because, whose rights will be banned next??Forward! Obama 2012
