Romney says Obama shouldn't fundraise off same-sex marriage

(CNN) – The day after President Barack Obama publicly endorsed same-sex marriage, and later issued a call for donations, his Republican rival said the hot button topic shouldn't be used to raise campaign cash.

"I don't think the matter of marriage is really a fundraising matter, either for the president, and it is certainly not for me," Romney said Thursday on Fox News.

He added, "I hope the issue as tender and sensitive as the marriage issue is not a source of fundraising for either of us."

On Wednesday, hours after Obama told ABC News he supports the rights of gay and lesbian couples to get married, he sent an email to supporters explaining the decision and making a fundraising pitch.

"Today, I was asked a direct question and gave a direct answer: I believe that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry," Obama wrote in the email.

The last line was a call for donations: "More than 1.9 million people like you power this campaign. If you can, please donate today," Obama wrote while linking to a form for giving money to his campaign.

Romney remarked that political positions, like support for same-sex marriage, shouldn't be taken to score political points.

"I don't know there is a calculation about which positions are going to help and which positions will hurt politically. You have positions. You describe what they are. And hopefully people are focusing on the major issues of the day which relate to our economy and getting people back to work," Romney said.

Romney decried any attempts to sway votes by shifting positions – something the candidate himself has been accused of throughout the GOP primary and the general election.

"You don't change positions to try and win states, or certain groups of Americans," Romney said. "You have the positions you have. And for a long time, from the beginning of my political career I made it clear I believe marriage should be a relationship between a man and a woman."

When pressed to explain the perceived shifts in his position on same-sex marriage, Romney reaffirmed his platform, which he said was shared by his wife Ann and the rest of his family.

"Let me make it very clear, that my preference is to have a national standard that defines marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman. That would then allow states to determine what rights would be provided for people of the same gender that wanted to have a relationship," Romney said.

In the interview, Romney said it was "fine" for states to allow gay couples to adopt children, but said it was his preference to "encourage the marriage of a man and a woman and we continue to define marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman."

Why not? The GOP is fundraising off of birth control, abortion and their fake "religious freedom". Honestly if a Republican told me the time of day, I'd check.

Define Marriage? Marriage has been redefinrd throughout the years. Slaves could not marry without their master's blessings, marrying acroos religions has been taboo. Why, up until 1967 it was illegal for mixed couples to wed. I think it is high time we allow any two people who are are in love with each other and wish to marry to be allowed that right. It harms no one.
I'm sure the right wing extremists can find someone else to discriminate against and some other issue which is sure to rend the fabric of American society beyond repair. (yawn)

Romney needs to quit trying to order people around who don't work for him and disclose all of the donors to the super PACs that are supporting him like Obama has.

Of course Obama would ask for a donation after he endorsed same sex marriage. He just found his new fountain of cash for his campaign. It wouldn't make a difference financially to Romney's campaign if Romney changed his position because Republicans cannot donate to Romney like Democrats can donate to Obama. Romney will never collect as much cash as Obama. Republicans don't have that kind of cash and the gay community has a lot of cash.

Is Romney campaigning for the presidency or is he campaigning to show how out of touch and for stupid things he can say. I think it's the later, this man is out of touch and don't blame him because he's never been exposed to the real World, his World has always been protected and isolated.

maybe the GOP shouldn't try to raise funds off that "Mother's Day" commercial either and certainly not Mitt using his wife to raise funds off a comment that not only wasn't made by anyone on the Obama team but that the president AND first lady did not condone either.

Romney's fat-cats out-spent the other Republican candidates at a ten to one ratio. They were merely tokens sevring a minor speed bumps for the Koch brothers and the other uber-rich who really control the Republican Party. Romney should avoid the subject of fund-raising to prevent working-class Republicans from understanding how little influence they have on the outcome.

Mitt, really? You fund raise from anyone that will give you $$, and when the far right cries foul over a gay policy advisor, you fold like a wet napkin. Just what we need, a man with no convictions for POTUS, only variable positions depending on the day & the donor.

You know why Romney does not want Obama fund raising off of the Gay Marriage? Because President Obama is
Getting MILLIONS, thats why. President Obama is on the right/correct side of HISTORY.

Whoa...hold on a minute here Willard. You're criticizing the Presidents fund raising? How about the little soiree you're attending at the home of a pharmaceutical giant that produces contraceptives and the plan b pill? I'm sure all the forced birthers on the right would love to hear that your campaign is being financed by a man behind the plan b pill. Hypocrite.

Ok, bub. Obama raised 1 million dollars in the first hour after this annoucement. Sounds like Mittens is just a tad jealous that he is at such a serious fundraising disadvantage.

Atta girl, Flipper, way to get out in front with the over-the-top poutrage and hypocrisy. Your GOBP cult has been fundraising off of anti-gay rhetoric for years now. Prop 8 ring a bell? Lotsa money there. Some big church out there was in up to their eyeballs. Mormon church, I think it was. Perhaps you've heard of them.

Do you wonder why Romney spends all of his time jumping all over Obama instead proposing something substantial that would benefit working people?

It is because he basically an empty vessel with no real plans other than CUT, CUT, CUT thats it folks.....
He wants to take everything apart that has been gained and thats all that you would get besides a War with Iran..

And hopefully people are focusing on the major issues of the day which relate to our economy and getting people back to work," Romney said.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________
American voters continue to focus on the economy and getting people back to work. Regardless of the Democratic Party campaign strategy to find more 'Obama-friendly' issues and spend hundreds of millions of dollars chasing that, the economy will be the issue in November. And Mitt Romney is the guy to get better results than we have seen in the last 3 years.

Who are the people behind this guy. He is so ... .. incompetent. He can't thin k fast enough to be president. He is what I would call a dufus, He must have had great secretaries during his time in the work force, because God knows the way he acts now he couldn't have managed himself out of a paper bag.

Sure RoMoney thinks its okay for him to fund raise off of bigotry, fear and hate, but he doesn't want the President to fundraise off of his stand for American’s equal rights?
