Romney says Obama shouldn't fundraise off same-sex marriage

(CNN) – The day after President Barack Obama publicly endorsed same-sex marriage, and later issued a call for donations, his Republican rival said the hot button topic shouldn't be used to raise campaign cash.

"I don't think the matter of marriage is really a fundraising matter, either for the president, and it is certainly not for me," Romney said Thursday on Fox News.

He added, "I hope the issue as tender and sensitive as the marriage issue is not a source of fundraising for either of us."

On Wednesday, hours after Obama told ABC News he supports the rights of gay and lesbian couples to get married, he sent an email to supporters explaining the decision and making a fundraising pitch.

"Today, I was asked a direct question and gave a direct answer: I believe that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry," Obama wrote in the email.

The last line was a call for donations: "More than 1.9 million people like you power this campaign. If you can, please donate today," Obama wrote while linking to a form for giving money to his campaign.

Romney remarked that political positions, like support for same-sex marriage, shouldn't be taken to score political points.

"I don't know there is a calculation about which positions are going to help and which positions will hurt politically. You have positions. You describe what they are. And hopefully people are focusing on the major issues of the day which relate to our economy and getting people back to work," Romney said.

Romney decried any attempts to sway votes by shifting positions – something the candidate himself has been accused of throughout the GOP primary and the general election.

"You don't change positions to try and win states, or certain groups of Americans," Romney said. "You have the positions you have. And for a long time, from the beginning of my political career I made it clear I believe marriage should be a relationship between a man and a woman."

When pressed to explain the perceived shifts in his position on same-sex marriage, Romney reaffirmed his platform, which he said was shared by his wife Ann and the rest of his family.

"Let me make it very clear, that my preference is to have a national standard that defines marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman. That would then allow states to determine what rights would be provided for people of the same gender that wanted to have a relationship," Romney said.

In the interview, Romney said it was "fine" for states to allow gay couples to adopt children, but said it was his preference to "encourage the marriage of a man and a woman and we continue to define marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman."

What a two-faced little whining weasel Willard is. He says: "don't fundraise off same-sex marriage, don't fundraise off of killing bin laden, don't fundraise on stopping the nations slide into [R] economic depression, don't fundraise on providing the first significant upgrade to healthcare law in more than a generation".

Well Willard the prez is going to fund-raise and campaign on ALL of his successes. What are you going to do? Throw a temper tantrum and break your etch-a-sketch?!!

"You don't change positions to try and win states, or certain groups of Americans," Romney said. "You have the positions you have." Mitt Romney – today – HA! I mean . . . HA! Can't believe what comes out of his mouth and can't wait to hear what is next!!! I mean . . . WHAT ARE YOUR POSITIONS on – Foreign Policy, the Economy, Taxation, Social Programs? Man I can't wait for the debates between the "presumptive" GOP nominee and the President. Spewing the old GOP lines we have heard from before the last election is really old and really wrong!

Corporate boy thinks Obama shouldn't raise money? Mr. Lips-to-the-tush of corporate America has advice for others? The national weather vane, who swings with the breeze, pontificates? What a paragon of character this is.

Then the Romney campaign should refuse/return any donations based on his stance of no same sex marriage.

All I can gather from this is that apparently Romney's advice doesn't apply to himself. Iwouldn't have been surprised to see ,at the end of his words; "And if you agree with me that the President shouldn't use this issue for fundraising, then please send what you can to......"

Give it a rest Robmey – worry about your own campaign and not Obama's. You are on the wrong side of history and know iit. But I'm sure you'll change your position soon enough!

So Obama is not committing to changing the law and we have yet to see a Bill to change the law and yet he is using his endorsement of same sex marriage to ask for donations? Is he going to put a Bill to change the law nationally? Yes or No.

Jealous much? They would fund raise on killing puppies if they thought it would get them a dollar. They are just getting worried that their nasty rhetoric is finally being recognized for what it is.. Anyway he has already been bought and paid for.

Ok Mitt, then you shouldn't campaign on "job creation", which is something you know very little about.

I guess Romney shouldn't fund raise off of being against same sex marriage either.

Amazing! Romney believes he should be able to tell the President how to campaign against him. Would he accept President Obama telling him what he should or shouldn't do in the campaign? Of course, hypocrisy still is the Republicans" strongest talking position.

Romney, while your at it why don't you suggest that the president should not raise any cash for his reelection campaign. I am sure you will follow suit given how high your ethics and values truly are.

Why not Mitt? You know you can't compete with Obama without the help of Super Pacs. You donor list is much shorter than Obama's and your crowds smaller and less enthusiastic than Obama's.

In principal, marriage should be between a man and woman. An exception to this rule if gay or lesbian couples love its another let them get 'married'. This may amount to sin as in the bible. For us to judge them is not right. Let those who have no sin cast the first stone. That decision only God can make. Let's rest this issue and only pray for them to return to God and seek forgiveness.
