Complexity in black church reactions to Obama’s gay marriage announcement

(CNN) - After the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. first gained wide public recognition in the mid-1950s, he made a special request to evangelist Billy Graham.

King was poised to join Graham on one of his barnstorming crusades, but he would do so only on one condition. He asked Graham to publicly speak out against segregation, a request Graham declined, says San Diego State University historian Edward Blum.

If there is any doubt about it look at Memphis, TN and Detroit, MI where they will elect an admitted crook.

"The answer to that question is evolving – just as Obama’s views on gay marriage have been. Poll numbers and interviews with black clergy suggest it’s simplistic to say that the black church is anti-gay marriage and may desert Obama, as some pundits have suggested."

Yes, pundits who are projecting GOP-style intolerance for differences in beliefs onto the black community, which is patently ridiculous on its face. The Bobblehead Brigade is always very quick to draw upon the carefully constructed false equivalency narrative...both parties are the same...these two sub-populations will react to similar thigns the same way, etc...and it makes them look mentally deficient at every turn. Anyone with a brain in their head, who wasn't using it to think "now, how can I turn this all into a controversy to be discussed ad nauseum to fill up the 24-hour news cycle," woudl have recognized the cultural differences and shared history and experience that would lead to the african american community to exhibit more tolerance for this than, say, the shared history and cultural makeup of your average Teavangelist. This was a no-brainer. Note to MSM: "no-brainer" means you should be able to understand it with very little thought, not that you should behave as though you lack one.

It is all statistical. Obama's advisers and handlers polled people after Biden's test announcement. The number of votes gained > number of votes lost. So it was a GO for Obama's announcement.

It was like the issue of race in 2008. More votes were gained than lost by people voting based on race, so race was a winning issue.

Romney's crew has found big times votes can be gained or lost on the economy so that is there main mantra.

Politics at this powerful level is cold and calculating. Remember that when you look at Romney's or Obama's smiles.

As a war vet, I fought for the equality of every american. I am a christian I am very much aware of the bibles teachings. I also know that fornication an adultry is a sin but that doesn't stop these hypocrits. You can't pick what u perceive as a sin. There is suppose to be separation of church and state. WWJD. He wouldn't turn his back on any man, woman or child, no matter what.

A few decades ago, Deputy Doublethink bullied a classmate for being different and, supposedly, gay (or at least more effeminate that DD thought was ok).

A few years ago, as governor of MA, Deputy Doublethink wanted to defund and eventually got rid of the commission charged with increasing public awareness about bullying of gay students and creating programs to educate the public and help students who had suffered such bullying.

Have we found the only thing in Deputy Doublethink's life on which he's managed to stay consistent?

  8. Obama 2012 - BEND Forward America, take another 4 long years of FAILURE

Black ministers are tying themselves in knots trying to figure out how they can still support a black president that has decided to violate his and their religious teachings in order to pander to a small segment of society to get their votes and campaign contributions.

There is no "evolving" here at all. Obama declared he was FOR gay marriage years ago, until it was not beneficial to him. Then he changed his position to his usual, I-VOTE-PRESENT position so he wouldn't tick anybody off and he couldn't be attacked. Now, he sees his poll numbers dropping and gays withholding campaign contributions so he has decided to once again support it solely for personal gain, NOT because he believes it is the right thing to do.

So Obama has proven himself to be EXACTLY what he has repeatedly attacks others for. He's a lyin' snake that would throw his grandmother under a bus if it mean't more campaign contributions and getting re-elected.

Okay, so let's spend time digging into Obama's childhood in Indonesia and let's find out what he was up to and throw it in his face. And let's remind everyone that Obama did cocaine and smokes. Now, can we move on and concentrate on how the economy is doing? Seriously, whatever these 2 men did as kids does not help the economy and we have families, people needing money, put food on the table, pay bills. So let's stop this waste of time into memory lane and get to the real issue, when will the unemployed find jobs? Grow up people!

Over and over the neo-cons want you to forget who they are and believe who they say they are. They insult our President then say you shouldn't insult people, falsely accuse the President then declare we shouldn't look into RoMomey's past of bulling and terrorizing other students. Keep government out of their life but pass laws to keep other people from being happy.
And then the GOP wonders why every one loathes the GOP?

Okay, let's all stop going to Church because it appears to me religion is breeding hate and ignorance. People don't follow the Bible, they follow the Ministers.

This is newsworthy? Black churches may not approve of gay marriage but it won't be enough to drive them away from supporting Obama in significant numbers. In other news, Conservative Christians claim Romney really isn't a Christian, but they will support him anyway. These are both positive signs, in a way. It means that when it's time to cast a vote, one's politics tends to be more important than one's religion.

You know what makes me laugh?? White people that don't even know 1 black person personally have the audacity to think they can speak for us. Most people commenting no ZILCH about blacks except what you see on Faux noise and movies. Educate yourselves, meet some black people and get to really know them. Then and only then will you even partially understand us. Ignorance breeds racism, which is why so many of you are racist. And I got that from a very good friend of mine who happens to be white, but was never exposed to any race but her own until she became an adult.

Blacks will support our President because we know he is trying to make things better for everyone, not just the rich. Then there are the ones that won't. So don't start trying to pit blacks against gays because it won't work. While many blacks don't like the lifestyle there are plenty in our race that don't care one way or another. And I am one of them. To each his own.

    OBAMA 2012!

The only way republicans can win, if they make this a single issue attack on the rights of a few. According to right wingnuts, equality is only for a select few privileged Americans, not all the people.
