Poll: Men and women don't see eye to eye on same-sex marriage

(CNN) - A new national poll points towards a gender gap over same-sex marriage.

According to new numbers released Monday morning from Gallup, 50% of Americans say same-sex marriages should be legal. But break it down by gender, and 56% of women say same-sex couples should be legally allowed to marry, but only 42% of men feel the same way.

The survey also points to a geographic divide, with a majority in the East, Midwest and West in support of legal same-sex marriages, but only four-in-ten in the South feeling the same way.

The poll also indicates the predictable generational gap, with younger voters more supportive of same-sex marriage and older voters opposed, and partisan divide, with nearly two-thirds of Democrats and a majority of independent voters, but only one-in-five Republicans, in support of such marriages.

The Gallup poll was conducted May 3-6, before the president's announcement last Wednesday that he personally supports same-sex marriage, with 1,024 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus four percentage points.

Do we really need to explain the term "Civil Rights"? Seems pretty straightforward to me.

Maybe women are not as conflicted of their femininity as some men seem to be of their masculinity? Just saying.

What's with the rainbow? Like the word gay, is now personified. We are now looking at the personification of the rainbow with the word gay dancing in the street in a lighthearted and carefree, brightly colored, showy, a gay profusion of purple and pink, practiced gender bending mannerism that look foolish and stupid. They tainted the rainbow and now they want to taint the word of God. To love someone no matter what the gender is God and against such, there is no law but men lusting for men and women lusting for women for sexual gratification is an abomination and is an act against nature. Yes you have human rights and free will. Question, Gay people, How do you fill about insist, should sister be allowed to merry brother, son allowed to merry mother, Father allowed to merry daughter? It's all about free love right?

Highly coincidental is that seems to be how the election will shake out.

    56% Obama
    42% Mitt
2% 3rd party candidate (May be Ron Paul, but may as well be Ronald McDonald)

Women aren't bothered by gay marriage at all.Men on the other hand have a problem with the macho thing. Why I don't know.Unless alot of men have had thaughts about having a sexual encounter with another man.Or they have had 1.Because it shouldn't bother another man unless he's not getting something out of it.If 2 gay men(married) and a straight couple were out having fun,the straight guy shouldn't have any doubt at all whats so ever that his wife is going to be seduced or hit on by eighter 1 of the gay men.Same with gay women ect.So where's the argument ? And marriage ? It's a contract plain and simple.Between 2 adults, committment for life. It's a liscense instituted by the Federal Goverment and distributed through the states.Religion won't win this 1 out. Its somrthing that had to come out and be respected and accepted for the good of all and for our society as a whole.

what a shocker. Most of the country is at least open to the idea or accepting of it. THEN of course you get the south......"Lordy Lordy you sinners" says reverend Cletus Billy Bob to his flock of intolerant sheep.

Sexual imagination plays a major part of the agrees and disagrees of same sex marriages/gays/lesbians because everything is about sex. People need to stop thinking below the waistline because they themselves aren't practicing the teachings of the Bible. You've got so-called preachers teaching sex, sex, sex and lots of sex, when in fact the Bible says sex is for the purpose of bringing forth life, not just to pleasure yourself.

And this is the reason why Obama is winning (by a large margin) the female vote. Time and time again, the republicans have come out on the wrong side of the female message. They never learn.

I have said it before and I will say it again. If you are a minority or female and vote republican in this election you deserve what you get. Plain and simple. Period.

Never understood my fellow straight mens' problem with gay marriage. I wish more men were married to each other: it would free up more unsatisfied ladies for the rest of us.

And Blindersoff, I'm sure there's a religion-based website somewhere for you to share your beliefs. Tickerites could do without your evangelism–thanks

Right... Which is why it has been voted down, usually by large margins, in 30 states, INCLUDING leftist California. Proving yourself to be totally clueless as usual.

Data Driven, now you are infringing on my rights to post my opinion whenever and wherever I see fit. These are valid points and should be examine from all perspectives. Gay folks will dominate, escalate and denigrate the straight and will be the bullies of the future imposing their ideologies. America, as we now know it today, will be desecrated. The children of tomorrow will have to be fumigated.

What a surprise that the south churchs are follower and not leaders. These people listen to the church, and my my, thy call themselves Christian? These people believe in beating their wives and keeping their children in a box. And of course, they want their guns also to be free to use when they decide it i to their advantgage. And of course they (the Men) want to have their time in bed, but, do not want to pay for the kids they have. Now that the free medical help is going down the tubes, I wonder how the women in their lives will get hlep??? and, some of the kids also?? Maybe the men will start to like men?? Just remember, E ARE ALL GODS CHILDREN AND NO ONE SHOUD HAVE TO BEG TO BE WITH THE ONE THEYLOVE AND DREAM OF BUILDING A LIFE TOGETHER. FREEDOM TO BE ONESELF.

  19. The REAL Truth...

I could care less about what folks do behind closed doors... that's up to them.
However, all this fuss about what Obama said was a personal opinion is unreal. There was commentary in earlier posts about this being "a bad law".. What law people?
The personal opinion of the POTUS does not translate to Federal law.. and there are no planned changes to the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act. It was his PERSONAL OPINION.. please check the FACTS!

SInce when did gays and lesbians have to beg anybody to be with anybody? Never. They've been building lives together for a long time. The problem comes when they want to redefine our language and laws to suit them. Marriage has a definition and doesn't need to be redefined by order of a judge.

men have always had a bigger problems with gays than women have so this split is not a shock. Many fathers biggest fear was more that their son would grow up to be GAY than he would grow up to be a criminal. Sad but true although the younger and more educated guys are the more now they are accepting of this.
