RNC, Team Romney roll out debt attack on Obama

(CNN) – National Republicans, paired with Mitt Romney's presidential campaign, will focus their attention this week on President Barack Obama's handing of the national debt, the groups announced Monday.

The effort will include a "major policy speech" from Romney, according to Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King, who was part of a conference call announcing the effort Monday morning.

"Governor Romney will be in Des Moines tomorrow afternoon at Drake University to give a major policy speech and it'll be based on the out-of-control spending and debt," King said on the call. "The time and the facility has not yet been identified, at least to me. But it'll be tomorrow afternoon at Drake University."

In a web video released Monday, the Republican National Committee laid out Obama's record on the debt, portraying the president as weak on cutting deficits.

The spot uses clips of Obama pledging to cut the national debt alongside a running debt clock, ticking toward the $15 trillion mark. Headlines from newspapers laid over Obama's sound bites also make the Republicans' point that Obama hasn't done enough to cut the debt.

In a statement, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus slammed Obama for not sticking to his campaign promises of slashing the federal debt.

"President Obama has broken his promise over and over when it comes to reining in Washington's out of control spending," Priebus said. "During the campaign, he lambasted the growing debt and, once elected, he pledged to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. Yet, President Obama's record has been to double-down on Washington's out of control spending by running trillion dollar deficits every year he's been in office."

In a separate email, Romney's campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said Obama's record on cutting the debt amounted to failed promises.

"For the last three-and-a-half years, President Obama's liberal policies of wasteful spending and skyrocketing debt haven't lived up to his own promises to control our nation's mounting deficits," Saul wrote, adding that Romney would reduce the federal debt by making the government "simpler, smaller, and smarter."

Obama's campaign responded to the debt attacks by slamming Romney.

"Mitt Romney knows a lot about out-of-control spending and debt – it was his record in Massachusetts," Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith wrote in a statement. "During his four years as governor, state spending increased by 6.5% per year, government jobs grew six times as fast as private sector jobs, taxes and fees went up by $750 million each year, and debt increased by 16%. In fact, he left Massachusetts with the largest per-capita debt of any state in the country."

The Democratic National Committee also responded to the Republicans' effort, citing Obama's achievements in slashing debt.

"President Obama has been focused on leading us out of the economic crisis and strengthening the middle class while putting forth a plan to cut the deficit by $4 trillion over the next decade," DNC Spokesman Melanie Roussell wrote. "He has initiated an overhaul of the regulatory system that cuts red tape and will save businesses $10 billion over the next five years, cut taxes for every working American, and approved fewer new regulations than President George W. Bush did during his first three years in office."

Attack on: the First President to accumulate 5 trillion dollars of wasted spending in three and a half years. the First President to demand a company hand-over $20 billion to one of his political appointees. the First President to spend a trillion dollars on ‘shovel-ready’ jobs when there was no such thing as ‘shovel-ready’ jobs. the First President to have 22 personal servants (taxpayer funded) for his wife.

What repubs president didn't run the debt up, when Obama took over the yearly debt was 1.3 trillion a year, its during the worst economic crisissince the great depression, its now under 1 trillion and heading south. The repubs plan on cutting spenders money and run big corporations to China, decayed although China doesn't have our middle class spending power, they've got 6 times more spenders than we do. This will crash our economy when big businesses leave to find demand else where.

Again, it is HILARIOUS.........Liberal are more worried about how Romney spends his own money, then how Obama spends theirs!!

Romney just needs to use the same campaign slogan that Reagan did when he ran for office........."Are you better off then you were four years ago?"........"Are your kids/grandkids better off then they were four years ago?"

They should have also reminded voters that gas was $1.79/gallon when Obama took office.......Gas has gone up OVER 100% since Obama took office!!

    "simpler, smaller, and smarter."

Mitt is full of it. He already said that he wants to set the defense budget at 4% of the GDP, regardless of our military activities. It currently fluctuates betwee 3-3.5% and the GDP is at a low point. Can you imagine how high that defense budget will be with 15% more of a normal GDP? While I agree it's simpler, it certainly is not smaller and it's definitely an idiotic approach. Spend more, even if we're not fighting anyone and don't need it.

    @ Sue...
since WHEN has ANY President had control over the price of gasoline? Evrn your Republican buddies have dropped this line of attack seeing the Dems tried the same thing when "W" was in office and gas went close to over $4 a gallon. Maybe since Newt is going to campaign now for Mitt he can give him his secret about how he planned to get $2.50 a gallon gasoline. LOL

BTW gas prices are going DOWN but I see nobody giving Obama credit for that...just BLAME if they go up.

  8. Obama 2012 - BEND Forward America, take another 4 long years of FAILURE

CNN.... a picture of a few one dollar bills hardly conveys the size of our debt. So how high would a stack of one dollar bills be if there were 16 TRIILION ones? To the moon and back? Maybe Jupiter (Sniffin's home planet) and back??

haahahahahahahaha.........Yeah, I guess when gas prices go up over 100% since Obama took office (gas was $1.79/gallon when Obama took office).............And, it goes from $4/gallon to $3.79/gallon with Obama in office, the liberals would claim that gas has gone down. hahahahahahha

    @ Common Cents

Do you know what the USAF bomber fleet looks like?

    Airframe........................First Flight............................# in service

    B-52...................................1952....................................85
    B-1B..................................1974.....................................100
    B-2....................................1979......................................20

What you need to realize is that a lot of the defense budget is used for future programs (currently getting cut by DoD because of lack of funding). We havent built a new bomber airframe since 1979, and w/o spending will not be building another in the forseeable futre. Development times on these are like 10-20 years (can be even more). I guess the question should be: Do you want 100 year old aircraft defending your grandchildren? Right now that is where we are headed.

Please give the credit for $12 trillion of our national debt to Reagan, Bush, and Bush the moron. Republican economics gave us the first great depression, and almost gave us a second one in 2008. Mittens wants to give the wealthy another $2.1 trillion to the wealthy in tax cuts. Republicans are a disaster waiting to destroy our country.

Those of you who slept through 2000- 2008, may not have known that gas prices were up to $3.25 in 2007, and were $4.15 in the summer of Bush's last year.
