Romney jabs Obama-Clinton relationship

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) – Mitt Romney jabbed his Democratic rival Barack Obama Tuesday over the president's complicated relationship with one of his party's leading political dynasties: the Clintons.

The presumptive GOP nominee told an Iowa audience that Obama had ignored former President Bill Clinton's 1996 declaration that "the era of big government is over."

Team Romney: Bush backing 'welcome' news

(CNN) – Mitt Romney's presidential campaign welcomed news of former President George W. Bush's support Tuesday.

"We welcome the president's support, as we welcomed his father's," Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul told CNN.

Boehner: Spending cuts must top debt ceiling increase

New York (CNNMoney) - House Speaker John Boehner warned Tuesday that he won't permit another increase in the debt ceiling without a larger amount of spending cuts and reforms approved in tandem.

"When the time comes, I will again insist on my simple principle of cuts and reforms greater than the debt limit increase. This is the only avenue I see ... to force the elected leadership of this country to solve our structural fiscal imbalance," Boehner said at a fiscal summit sponsored by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, according to prepared remarks.

Former aide: Edwards surprised to learn about donations

Greensboro, North Carolina (CNN) - A friend and adviser to John Edwards testified Tuesday that the former presidential candidate appeared surprised to learn an elderly heiress sent money that ended up going to his mistress and another aide.

John Moylan, on the second day of defense testimony, said he believes Edwards learned about the checks from Rachel "Bunny" Mellon to campaign staffer Andrew Young for the first time in August 2008.

Clinton: Debt deal should be top campaign issue

Washington (CNNMoney) – President Bill Clinton on Tuesday said those running for office should make reaching a debt deal the top campaign issue in the fall's elections.

"I think this budget issue should become front and center in this election," Clinton said on Tuesday at a fiscal summit sponsored by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation.

Team Paul explains new strategy

(CNN) – Despite the announcement he will not channel campaign resources into upcoming primary states, Ron Paul is scheduled to make campaign stops and plans to build upon his delegate count, according to his campaign.

On Tuesday, Paul campaign chairman Jesse Benton said the Republican presidential candidate and Texas congressman is slated to speak at the Minnesota state convention this weekend and at the Texas convention in June, while also engaging in other speaking opportunities.

Obama talks same-sex marriage on "The View"

(CNN) – Last week, Barack Obama went on record as the first American president to support same-sex marriage, but he doesn't appear ready to take his commitment beyond the endorsement stage.

In an interview that aired Tuesday on ABC's "The View," Obama wouldn't commit to fighting for the the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act - a federal law that defines marriage as the legal union between one man and one woman.

Pawlenty defends Romney against Bain criticism

(CNN) – One of Mitt Romney's top surrogates said Tuesday that Democratic attacks against the likely GOP nominee over Bain's role in a company's bankruptcy were unfair, pointing out Romney was no longer making decisions at the company when the steel plant in question was shuttered.

"Every third party group who has looked at that attack ad on the Obama election campaign has said it's misleading, false and unfair," Tim Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor, said on CNN's "Starting Point."

Poll: Who Americans think will win presidential election

Washington (CNN) - Americans are pessimistic about the current state of the economy, but optimistic about what things will look like a year from now, according to a new poll.

A USA Today/Gallup poll released Tuesday also indicates that a majority believe President Barack Obama will beat presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in November's general election.
