Romney web video highlights unemployment

(CNN) – A web video released Tuesday by Republican Mitt Romney's presidential campaign shows Americans struggling with unemployment, making the case that President Barack Obama's economic policies have failed to stem the country's jobs crisis.

The spot, called "A Few of the 23 Million," features three workers in Iowa who have lost jobs or are struggling to make ends meet. Romney returns to the general election battleground Tuesday to deliver an address on America's federal debt. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated in their April jobs report that 12.5 million Americans were unemployed. When people who were underemployed or who dropped out of the workforce were included in the calculation, the number increased to 23 million.

Deborah Ragland, who the narrator of the video says lives in Webster City, Iowa, says in the spot she's been looking for a job for two years, and that her unemployment benefits recently ran out.

"We're just going to sit tight and see how things go, and see if the next president turns it around," Ragland says at the end of the ad.

Another Iowan, Tony Knapp, says his family's mentality of self-sufficiency has made it tough to accept unemployment benefits from the government.

"My dad doesn't like me getting unemployment," Knapp says in the spot. "He hates it. Because he grew up in that mentality that you don't get unemployment. You don't live off the government. You do everything, you pay for everything your own way."

Promises from Obama during the 2008 election haven't been fulfilled, Knapp says.

"That's the problem," Knapp says. "A lot of people around here when Barack was running and all that, everyone believed, everyone had hope. They all thought 'Man, this guy's gonna get something done.'"

He continues, "When he is in office now it just seems like nothing's getting done. It seems like it's all talk. You can say whatever you want. But it's not about saying what everyone wants to hear, it's about doing it."

The narrator in the ad concludes: "Hope and change has not been kind to millions of Americans, but they still believe in this great country, and deserve a leader who believes in them: Mitt Romney."

Lis Smith, an Obama campaign spokeswoman, said the Romney web video didn't accurately reflect the president's record.

“Mitt Romney would like Americans to forget that when President Obama took office, we were in the middle of an economic crisis and losing 750,000 jobs a month," Smith wrote in a statement. "But because of the President’s focus on getting us out of the crisis and strengthening the middle class, we’ve seen over 4.2 million private sector jobs created over the last 26 months. Mitt Romney’s record in both the private and public sectors, on the other hand, was one of helping the wealthiest prosper by any means necessary, even if it meant undermining workers and middle class families."

Romney's focus on the economy and jobs comes after a week in which the general election campaign focused largely on same-sex marriage. Obama, for the first time, endorsed legal same-sex marriage in an interview last Wednesday.

The Republican National Committee, along with Romney's campaign, said Monday they would spend the week focusing on the ballooning national debt, releasing a web video yesterday and pushing toward Romney's Tuesday speech in Des Moines.

Romney has consistently said he is a better candidate to turn the American economy around, citing his experience as a businessman in the 1980s and 1990s. Democrats counter his time as a private equity executive disqualifies him from being an effective job creation, since many of the businesses his firms invested in shed thousands of jobs in the attempt to become profitable.

You have to call it like it is: Obama has increased deficits, debt and unemployment. There is no way around the facts.

So this means that Deputy Doublethink now supports ending Big Oil subsidies and will be refunding the gov't all of the profit he made off Dynamic Steel while it received millions in gov't money and special tax deductions?

What a joke – the party of NO has held the American people who are unemployed hostage hoping that people who don't pay attention to politics will know any better. What's your plan Willard?

Two things, Willard Romney is a serial liar, and unemployment isn't a "handout". An employee pays for unemployment insurance their whole working lives, and only receives a tiny portion of it back when they file for unemployment benefits. If anything, it's a revenue scheme, which you right-wingers should love.

"We're just going to sit tight and see how things go, and see if the next president turns it around,"

Translation: "Don't vote. Just stay home. If you turn out in droves like you did in 2008, Obama is going to hump our legs in Nov and not send flowers the next day. We're very very afraid of Dem/liberal voter enthusiasm."

Is Willard going to highlight the unemployment his party caused? Is he going to highlight the unemployment that will happen again if he's elected and we return to the Bush policies that he embraces?

If you vote for Romney, there won't be any unemployment money to get for your family. He WILL gut these programs and leave you to fend for yourself.

  11. vote the Tea Party OUT in 2012

several hundred thousand Americans just LOST their unemployment benefits because the party of Mitt chose not to extend them any longer. And I am sure many of those people have not just been sitting on thier behinds getting a check and not looking for work. But what do you exect from a party that feels as Herman Cain said that if you're unemployed it's your OWN fault. Expect more of the same if Mitt Romney wins in 2012.

Are Americans really stupid enough to vote Republican, the party of radical religious extremist domestic terrorists? Really?? Shame on anyone who supports the GOP, for all they're doing is giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

The republicans are painting Obama as an ineffective president yet when they vote in congress they do not give him anyhting. As I see it the stagnant economy is more their fault than any. They were in charge if everything and the economy tanked. Now they want to do it again. No thanks.

The unmitigated gall of someone who is responsible for so many losing their livelyhoods for profit never ceases to amaze me. If any sane person believes the garbage being spouted by the Romney campaign as far as jobs and the economy go, they should be certified insane. I'm still waiting to hear the great Romney's ideas for job creation and stimulating the economy. If those ideas are anything like his foreign policy regarding the place he referred to as the Soviet Union, I say break out the CATHODE RAY GUNS!!!

This is the RNC and the Romney 2012 campaign doing their job well. This is an issue that affects Americans now and well into the future. Do you see Obama or the DNC spending any time talking about fixing the national debt problem? Absolutely not. They will spend their money trying to cut down Mitt Romney with misguided personal attacks. They will spend their money and effort chastising the successful and wealthy.

So look at the key messages of these 2 campaigns and get a perspective of who will go to work for the voter in 2013. That's clear.

    Romney 2012.

So when Willard set out to save the Olympics, he did not have his hands out asking for government subsidies and grants? 47th in the nation is job creation is good? Bankrupting GST Steel and destroying communities is good for the country? Just how many jobs were lost in the stationary market once Staples was created? These are questions that Willard's campaign needs to answer. Willard can't run away from his record. The President can run on his. Yes! GM is alive and Bin Laden is dead.

All Romney's ad video's have a double edge blade that cut both ways. Romney's ads severely cut the Republican leadership far deeper than The President, His video ads appear to point at the Speaker of the House, the senate and it's "No" policy agenda. Yes it is the economy stupid and it is the responsibility of the House of representative to make a way. Not the president. All things out of the Republican leadership reach the president is successful . . . case and point, foreign policy, need I say more?

The Government Opposition Party is holding jobs hostage until they get the White House back. Then they'll give their friends in the Big Corp's the green light to stop the hiring freeze, like they created jobs, after they held employment hostage. Unemployment is one of their tools used to try and make B.O, a one term President.
