Obama, Romney tied in battleground Wisconsin

(CNN) – The race between President Barack Obama and likely Republican nominee Mitt Romney is in a dead heat in Wisconsin, a poll released Wednesday indicated.

The survey from Marquette Law School showed both Obama and Romney garnering support from 46% of likely voters in Wisconsin. The numbers reflect a boost for Romney, who faced a four point deficit in the state the last time Marquette polled likely voters in April.

Obama's job approval rating stood at 46%, according to the poll, with 49% of likely voters disapproving of the job he's doing as president. That's a drop for the incumbent Democrat, who enjoyed a 50% approval rating in Wisconsin last month.

In terms of favorability, Obama is still ahead of his GOP rival, though his numbers are dropping. Forty-nine percent of likely Wisconsin voters view the president favorably, compared to 47% who say their feelings are unfavorable. Again, Obama's numbers have dropped since April, when his favorability in Wisconsin stood at 55%.

Romney's favorability in the state continued to head north, moving from 33% in April to 40% in Wednesday's survey. However, more voters in Wisconsin (44%) still have an unfavorable view of the former Massachusetts governor.

Obama won Wisconsin by a fairly large margin in 2008, beating Sen. John McCain 56%-42%. The state last voted for a Republican presidential candidate in 1984, but is considered very much in play in 2012.

Wisconsin is currently mired in a bitter gubernatorial recall election, pitting Republican Gov. Scott Walker against Democratic Mayor Tom Barrett. Democrats gathered enough petitions to recall Walker after he cut collective bargaining for union workers, sparking massive protests at the state capitol.

The Marquette Law School poll was conducted by phone from 600 likely voters between May 9-12. The sampling error was plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.

I keep saying it that people will vote according to their checkbooks. Never did we go through these desperate time with Bush nor did we exhaust our savings and find it impossible to find a job. 3 weeks was the most it use to take under Bush or Clinton to find a new job but now we are looking at 9 months, 12 months and some even 2 years. Under Obama we live in constant worry and fear and all this fighting on TV, people have gotten really rude, aggressive. With Clinton and Bush the country never felt so much chaos, out of control.

Hey, DNC. You need a Etch A Sketch reset yourselves. Don't you realize how critical this Walker recall election is going to be for the November general election? Obviously, you don't. The recall election is a dry run for the fall's general election. It is test bed to air messages and see what sticks. Hey, DNC. You are blowing an opportunity here.

These phone polls are not accurate and are a waste of time.

All these polls don't matter right now. When October 1st rolls around you'll see people get re-energized and Obama will shoot to the top again. The people of the U.S ( Majority ) will stand behind Obama because they will NOT allow this country to be in the hands of the very people who destroyed it and reuined people lives. It doesn;t matter what lies the other Party says, the people won't buy it. Everyone has suffered and they will NOT forget what happened. This is something that will be remembered for years & years to come.Just like the Last Great Depression. My parents never forgot it and talked about it all my life. The same will be with this generation and the children of this generation.Pres.Obama has done a wonderful job trying to put this country back together and the people see the obsticals the republicans have thrown in his way. They know the economy is down because the republicans want Pres.Obama to look bad.But thats just not going to work and it is actually going to back-fire on them.In the END, it is going to be the people and their VOICE & VOTE that determines the POTUS. And it will be President Obama.

Nice to know that everyone in Wisconsin has not been bamboozled by the corrupt union thugs. The thugs are trying very hard to keep their members from having a choice and with the readily available assistance of the NEA, they are worknig very hard to dumb down the state so that they can reelect the irresponsible to take care of the lazy drug addicts and welfare frauds the NEA creates.

Interesting that so many Wisconsinites are willing to go the Mississippi, Louisiana, West Virginia route and live under the thumbs of the billionaire Koch brothers.

Get back to us in a few years and let us know how that works out for you all ...

Why don't you tell the TRUTH and say you would pick ANY white person and it doesn't matter what they believe or what policies they have or in Willard's case don't have as long as they look LIKE YOU. You must be real miserable. Seek help.

  16. Is Mitt a Git?

Poll data is becoming less and less reliable, as people are hanging up their phones. Voters of both parties feel equally, so polling data as the campaigns continue will be less and less reliable, and will cost pollsters a lot more money to run them. Also beware of people who do pick up but will say they will vote for someone, but then actually vote for the other guy.

"Walker is ahead because people realized that his was correct and these Unions and employees were out of control."

Yeah, it was so "out of control" of them to repeatedly agree to pay cuts and benefits adjustments for many many years prior to Walker and the GOPers in the state legislature enacting their plan to "divide and conquer" the unions and Dem/liberal voters.

Yes, he literally said that to a supporter...a supporter who happened to be a billionaire who wanted him to tell her how he would be destroying the unions.

Again, the "crisis" of public employee unions was nothing but smoke and mirrors and manufactured budgetary problems. CNN won't report the FACTS about it, and instead focuses on he-said-she-said National Enquirer style "gossip news" because they want to have a controversy to bring up all the time. Getting to the bottom of it and informing the American public about what really happened isn't even secondary on their priority list...it's OFF the list.

@Woman In California – I have lots of Blacks in my family so your anti-Black theory is a no no no in my case, but nice try, in trying to make this about racial descrimination. And we in our family are not miserable, we actually have the United Nations in my family which I doubt you have in yours.

What's wrong with these poll people? Mitt Romney can't be tied with nobody. He has yet set an agenda and yet proved he is even capable of going on any network except FOX. So all the respondents must watch FOX because nobody else in the country has seen him.

@Sniffit – Nice try but I think CNN did a pretty good job reporting the situation in Wisconsin with the Unions and employees.
